We lucked out so far this year by not having any hurricanes. Please pray for those that were affected by Hurricane Florence for a quick recovery. September was a very busy month for our council. We cooked and served for First Friday; participated in a memorial service for a passed Brother; recognized our fallen heroes in the 9-11 Ceremony; sponsored a blood drive for Santa Maria del Mar; had Council 10514 and Assembly 2810 representatives at the Alpha Women’s Center Fund-Raising Gala (see page 7); and participated & cooked for the Parish Sponsored Arts and Crafts Show. Thank you to all the Brothers and the Color Guard for making Brother Joe Palermo’s memorial service so memorable for his family. It was a very impressive service and the Color Guard added great solemnity to the service. Kudos to PGK and Brother Kevin Ryan for organizing a very poignant 9-11 Memorial Service (see article on page 5, photos on page 6). He was finally able to complete a 9-11 Memorial, as last year, all his planning and efforts were blown away to Irma! The Color Guard did a fantastic job along with the JROTC Students from Matanzas High School. Of course, it would not have been as reverent without the prayers and words from Father Jim May who also celebrated a wonderful mass for all those who marched back to church from the Flagler Pier. Also a shout out to all the brothers who cooked and served for the reception that followed. Great job by one and all! Thanks to our Chaplain, Father Kaz and Brother Nick Carrube, we have been able to re-start our Blood Drive Campaign. Hopefully, this will become a quarterly event for our council. Our Council, Assembly, & SMdM Respect Life Committee were represented at the annual Alpha Women’s Center Gala Banquet by GK Pat & Jacque Mulvihill, FN Tony & Claudia Gasparino, DD Dan & Ruth Nagy, Mike & Sherry Boullion, Duane & Janice Berreth, Steven & Jill Neyer, Paul & Patti Gloekler, Joe & Betty Zaia. Alpha Women’s Center has been the recipient of our council’s efforts in providing the availability of a mobile ultrasound machine (see article and photos on page 7). The Santa Maria del Mar’s ‘Arts and Crafts Show’ was very successful, thanks to all the Brother Knights who helped with set-up on Thursday, cooking and selling refreshments on both days and for staffing our table, selling raffle tickets. We could not have done it without YOU! October looks to be as busy as ever. Bingo starts on Tuesday, October 9 th (see ad on page 4 for details). Bingo is our council’s biggest fund-raising activity. We can use all the help you can provide. Please contact EY Walter (386- 986-1163) to volunteer your time or just show up on BINGO Tuesdays. You will be put to work! Please don’t forget the Tootsie Roll Drive this month. We have several dates and locations this year and our success depends on YOU! Please consider donating at least 2 hours of your time for this worthy cause. The funds that we collect are distributed to 3 programs (Whispering Meadows Program, TRAIL Transition Program, Special Needs CCD Program) that assist persons with disabilities. Sign-up sheets will be available at our regular meeting on October 3 rd . There are a number of time slots available on 10/19, 10/20, and 10/21; you can choose your time and location. (see page 8 for details on volunteering) Our first dinner dance of this fraternal year will be held on Saturday, October 20 th (see ad on page 6 for details). The dance will have a Halloween theme and prizes will be awarded for best costumes. Help is needed the night before to set up the hall (many hands make light work) and at the dance with cooking, serving, and clean-up. The more volunteers we have at the dance, the more everyone gets to enjoy the music and fellowship. Let’s not forget the Soccer Challenge being held on Saturday, October 13 th at Wadsworth Park in Flagler Beach. The event will be held from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. If you can help with this event organized by PGK and Brother Tony Gasparino, please arrive by 8:30 to help with set-up. Thank you, Tony, for organizing this youth event. Please say the following prayer for our sick and bereaved Brothers and their families: Lord, bless our sick today so that they may bear their illness in union with Jesus’ sufferings and restore them quickly to health. In your goodness, we ask you to grant our beavered Brothers, and families everlasting peace and happiness. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Knights, thank you for your prayers and guidance in helping us have a successful fraternal year. May God Bless you and keep you safe. Vivat Jesus Pat

We Stand on Ethical Ground

Some people believe that ethics in business is a contradiction in terms. They think that in order to be profitable, a company and its leaders must abandon morality and embrace the dark, greedy

side that they see so often in the news and in movies.

At the Knights of Columbus, we know this isn’t true. A business can be both ethical and successful. We are.

As a Catholic organization, we understand the value and importance of our core beliefs and the original mission of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. Much of the strength and financial security we provide to members and their families can be attributed to our ethical, moral standards.

More than 96 percent of Knights who buy our life insurance keep it, year in and year out. The Order takes this commitment to our members very seriously. This means carefully planning when it comes time to invest. Our professional staff researches all transactions to insure that they fall in line with Catholic values.

“We exclude any company engaged in activity that conflicts with Catholic moral teaching: companies directly involved in abortion, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for-profit health care that pays for any of these, or

pornography,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “There are many companies in the pharmaceutical and communications industries that would undoubtedly provide excellent returns for us, but which are not in our portfolio because they engage in research and development or programming in ways that violate the sanctity or dignity of human life.”

In the end, the Knights of Columbus investment strategy is motivated by morality, not money. Yet, each year we remain profitable, increase our assets and stay dedicated to this vision that will keep the Order financially sound for generations to come.

But don’t just take our word for it. In 2018 the Knights of Columbus was named a “World’s Most Ethical Company” by the Ethisphere Institute for the fifth year in a row.

“Faithful Catholics have choices when buying life insurance,” said the Supreme Knight. “But they know that at the Knights of Columbus their policy is supplied by an insurer that shares their moral and ethical values and is guided in all of its investment and sales practices by those values.”

Youth Program October 2018

I am very happy to inform you the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has presented a donation check to the KofC to help support the KofC youth programs. The Sheriff’s Office support is a wonderful way to show the students of Flagler County how they are supported by the Sheriff and his staff. They know that the KofC

programs help to educate students to be aware of the dangers of substance abuse as they mature and grow into adulthood. The Sheriff’s Office has been supporting our programs for several years and we extend a special thank you to the Sheriff’s Office for their contribution. Soccer Challenge - scheduled for Saturday, October 13th 9:00 am – 12:00 noon and will be held at Wadsworth Park Field near the Flagler Bridge on SR100. The Flagler Youth Soccer League administrator Becky Mitchell will be helping the KofC with this event. Poster Contest - will be held in conjunction with the Flagler County Red Ribbon week from Oct. 23rd through Oct. 31st. The Posters are due to Sabrina Crosby by Tuesday, November 6th. The county judging will be on Tuesday, November 8th 9:30 am – 11:00 am and will be held at the Flagler County Government Building on the 3rd floor in room 3B. The awards will be presented to the winners at the School Board Meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 18th at 6:00 pm in the Government Building board room, 1st floor. Basketball Free Throw - will be held at the Carver Community Center in Bunnell, Florida on Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon. Rev. Elijah Emanuel, Facility Director of the Carver Center, will be helping with this event. Anyone who would like to help with the youth programs please let me know. Council 10514 Recognized at Gala Event

Notre Dame Knights of Columbus Council 10514 was recognized for their support of Alpha Women’s Center in Bunnell at their recent “Branches of Hope” Gala. The event was held in the Palm Coast Community Center. Knights of Columbus Notre Dame Council #10514 was listed as an ‘Alpha “Partners Advocating Life” (PAL)’ member in the Gala program book. A photo from the council’s Pasta Dinner & Karaoke Night Alpha fundraiser which raised $510 was featured in their program guide. Knights of Columbus wives attending the event volunteered to host the Gala Event Registration Table. Volunteering were: Jacque Mulvihill, Sherry Boullion, Jill Neyer, and Janice Berreth. They welcomed over 250 event attendees (Top Photo). A number of speakers highlighted the work of Alpha’s Women’s Center and how they provided support to those efforts. Among the services provided to clients of Alpha are: parenting skill training, financial assistance, adoption support, spiritual counseling, and ultrasounds. Lennette Deal from Life Services stated that they have an 85% success rate of saving babies when the mother views an ultrasound of her unborn child. Board of Directors President Bruce Lampe thanked the Knights of Columbus for their past efforts in securing an ultrasound machine for Life Services of St. John’s County. This has allowed Alpha to partner with Life Services to measure the need of that service. It has been extremely successful and has become an integral part of their ministry to women that find themselves in a crisis pregnancy. Pro-Life Chairman Duane Berreth and his wife, Janice who is the Respect Life Ministry President at SMdM, gave a short presentation to the Gala attendees (Photo #2). They explained how the Knights have partnered with the Respect Life Ministry at Santa Maria del Mar to conduct a Spiritual Adoption Program as well as sponsor a fundraising drive through a Baby Bottle Campaign. The latter raised over $5,400 for Alpha.
