Wood Stove Exchange ProgramSuspended for a year

The Merritt Air Quality Committee& City council have decided that thewood stove exchange not be offered thiswinter. Provincial funding for the pro-gram has been reduced by 50%. Thisfunding supported program marketing, paid for the program coordinator andsupplied part of the grant money. It istherefore expected that less than fullfunding of exchange programs wouldresult should the committee have madeapplication.

Consumer confidence has been slowto recover and many people who wouldotherwise change their old stoves outare still delaying major purchases.Hopefully by next year interest willhave increased to the point where itwould be feasible to offer a wood stoveexchange once more.

Over the two years the programoperated, close to 50 dirty old stoveswere taken out of use and replaced withclean-burning efficient units. This hasresulted in the removal of 3 tonnes ofparticulate emissions from the NicolaValley airshed every heating season. TheAir Quality Committee is now looking at other projects to help clean up the air inour valley. Any ideas? contact Councillor Dave Baker at City Hall.

More on the first recent home invasionMore details about an alleged home invasion in Merritt were made public

Wednesday with the release of search warrant documents. Merritt RCMP used thedocuments to get permission to search a minivan seized after a chase on theCoquihalla Highway near Hope Oct. 19.

Three Lower Mainland men were arrested. The search warrant documents sug-

gest the men, armed with a gun and a Taser, earlier broke into the home of a Merrittwoman as they posed as gas inspectors. Once inside, they tried to immobilize herwith plastic zap straps and duct tape. She fought the men off, however, by kickingone of them in groin. As well, the woman's dog bit another fellow in the rear end, sending all three running for the door.

The woman told police she did not know the men, and believes the three wrong-ly targeted her house for unknown reasons.

Agazzy Haddish, Frederick Agbefe and Andrew Owusu, all from the LowerMainland, face charges of break and enter, forcible confinement, assault and dan-gerous driving. They remain in custody and are expected to appear in Kamloopsprovincial court in the coming days. Source: Kamloops Daily News

Diet 1-liners It's not the minutes spent at the table that put on weight, it's the seconds. The biggest drawback to fasting for seven days is that it makes one weak. The toughest part of a diet isn't watching what you eat. It's watching what other people eat. An excellent way to lose weight is by skipping ... snacks and dessert.
