The recent September school holidays saw the running of the 11th Shearing School through the partnership of Wedderburn Community House and Shearers/Wool Handlers Inc. This year the R. E. Ross Trust have sponsored our school and will continue to do so for the next three years. Eight young men and women from the local district gained invaluable skills in Shearing and Wool Handling that they can hopefully use in local sheds. Continued on page three...

Editorial – October 2015

Well this has been the busiest October ever for all of us here

at the Community House.

We welcome Martedi Autunno who is our new editor of Scoop & Scuttlebutt. Martedi is new to Wedderburn and has volun-teered to do our newsletter so if you have any articles you want published please have them written and email them to - [email protected] by the 20th of each month.

We had our Tastes of Loddon on October 3 which was very

well attended and we are already taking bookings for our No-

vember meal to be held on Saturday 28. Check out our flyer in

this edition.

Our Garden Expo on Sunday 25 October showcased some of

the finest gardens in the area with Tanya and Nick Chalmers,

Wendy Smith and Owen Rule, Adelaide and Vic Onopko,

Julie Ritchie and Jon Chandler, Jude and Warren Roberts,

Jude and Ric Raftis, Faye and David Lockhart and Gill Millie

all giving up their valuable time to prepare their beautiful gar-

dens for this event which helped raise around $800 for the

Lions Aged Care Fund.

This Sunday we have our much anticipated Naturally New

Age Festival. Jacquie has been working hard getting stallhold-

ers organised and once again securing quality entertainment.

This year we also have the Yemaya Festival people joining

us, so this will bring a whole new dimension to our festival! By

the time you get this newsletter the festival will be over so we

hope you enjoyed it! Thank you to all the volounteers who

helped at both events.

November is turning out to be just as busy with Hamish and

Andy coming to town. All hands on deck for this once in a

lifetime event for Wedderburn. Well done Michelle Murray for

putting Wedderburn back on the map as the centre of the uni-

verse!

This year’s group consisted of seven guys from Wedderburn, Bridgewater, Murphy’s Creek and Pyramid Hill, and one lady from Bendigo. Their skill level was very mixed with a couple of the guys having worked in sheds for some time, but most had never worked with sheep before. The trainers and volunteers were pleasantly surprised by how quickly the students picked up the skills and they were all shearing

by the end of the first week.

The participants attend the school for various reasons: some in search of work in local sheds, some to shear their own animals, others to expand their skill base and general life experience. As you can imagine working in the sheds on these hot days and the insurmountable

numbers of flies that have been around recently would test even the toughest of characters.

Luckily our catering crew from the Community House and wonderful volunteers out on the farm, ensure the students and trainers have everything they need. The catering crew consisted of Louise, Shirl, Glenda, Joan, Jane and new member Donna, and they provided the most scrumptious morning teas and lunch each day. The students could not get washed up and ready quickly enough each day when

the homemade sausage rolls, slice and scones arrived.

The shearing school couldn’t happen without the assistance of the Lions Club and their wonderful members. The Lions Club provides barbeque lunch twice during the fortnight, including for the Open Day on the last day. Members such as Ray, Frank, and Leo help set the sheds up, take out the food each day, bring back the dishes and set up marquees and toilet for the trainers and students for the two

weeks. Mal Burge even drives the bus to Melbourne for their excursion to the Wool Sales.

Special mention was made this year of Ray Tonkin who was one of the founding members of the Shearing School. Ray is the person that keeps everything on track. He contacts us here at the Community House months in advance to make sure we are preparing for the school season. He is the main channel of communication between Gavin Holt (who very kindly provides the farm and sheep for the school) and the Community House. Once Ray and Frank have set up the shed, equipment and brought in the sheep, they then spend the fortnight out at the school making sure everything runs like a well-oiled machine. I suspect they quite enjoy working the sheep and being

part of the atmosphere at the school, but by the end of the fortnight they deserve a well-earned rest.

SMILES ALL ‘ROUND AT THE SPRING DANCE. Marg van Veen

Anyone passing the Mechanics Hall Friday 16th would no doubt have been wondering what all the noise was. It was in fact the Spring

Dance, organised by the Wedderburn Community House. A room full of music, dancing and laughter ……what else could you ask for?

To try something new, the Community House decided to hold a 50/50 dance,:

equal parts Ballroom and Rock’N’Roll as the culmination of another 10 week stint of

dance classes. The difference between the classes earlier in the year that culminat-

ed in the Masquerade Ball and these classes were the inclusion of Rock’N’Roll

sessions. The dance sessions earlier in the year are aimed at people preparing for

the Deb Ball; the Debutantes, their families and friends; but we found the classes

were so popular with the general community that we decided to run another course

of 10 weeks later in the year. The Rock’N’Roll was added due to the responses on

the feedback forms at the end of the first course. So we decided to incorporate the

two dance styles with great success.

Local Ballroom expert Dede Williams taught the Ballroom sessions again, but for

the Rock’N’Roll sessions she organised the Bendigo Jailhouse Rockers club to

come up to Wedderburn and teach us some moves. There are actually 3000

Rock’N’Roll moves …...we struggled to learn about eight. It was so much fun with

the Jailhouse Rockers, as half a dozen or more would come to the classes each

Tuesday, enabling many of us to dance with experienced rockers and be spun so

much we needed to stop and compose ourselves every so often.

Best of all was the fact that quite a few members of the Jailhouse Rockers then

attended our Spring Dance in their Rocker outfits, whipping up a frenzy on the

dance floor. It was fantastic to watch. Then they started dragging the locals up to dance, we bopped till we dropped. The Bendigo

Rockers weren’t the only out of towners enjoying the night. People turned up from as far away as Ballarat, Barham, Melbourne and

St.Arnaud. One chap from Ararat had such a good time he thinks perhaps he should move to Wedderburn.

Excellent music was provided by local band 501, who is made up of musicians from across the region, including Wedderburn locals

Alan Mulrainey and drummer Tanya Elliot (Tanya couldn’t play this particular evening but we know she awesome). Local dance styles

were definitely on display with Berna Reeves and Ron

Weston tearing up the floor with their Rock’N’Roll

moves, while Greg Deimos and Lynne Habner were

looking elegant with their Ballroom style, to name but a

few. One of the funniest part of the evening was a danc-

ing balloon game that everyone participated in.

By mid evening everyone was swapping dance partners

and moving from table to table chatting to each other.

By the end of the evening we had all the various

Rock’N’Rollers promising to be back next year and bring

their friends with them. So it sounds like we will be run-

ning it again in 2016. Hope to see a few more locals

shaking a tail feather next time.

Thanks to all the local people who helped set up the

Hall and help run the night. It wouldn’t be possible

without you all!

STUNNING GARDENS WOW VISITORS TO EXPO. The compliments were flowing fast as locals and visitors to Wedderburn enjoyed a beautiful sunny day visiting seven local gardens as

part of the Garden Expo. The gardens ranged from Tanya and Nick’s tropical wonderland, to Wendy and Owens succulents oasis.

Visitors, mainly women came from as far as Wycheproof and Maryborough to see what our local gardens can achieve in our harsh

conditions and clay soils. They weren’t just impressed, many were astounded by the innovative ideas, the use of art to highlight areas

of the gardens and the great variety of plants that we manage to grow

in these conditions.

People commented on how unique each garden was, showing the

gardeners personality and style. A couple of big hits were the Bali-

nese hut at Warren and Jude’s place and the new pizza oven at

Wendy and Owens. I believe the pizza oven was tested out at the

end of the day with a get together of all the gardeners who kindly

opened their gardens to the public.

Vic and Adelaide's garden was like an adventure; every time you

turned a corner there was another wonderful surprise. All of Ade-

laide's lovely mosaics and Vic’s wall of garden creatures and mirrored

windows was a treat peeking out through the trees and shrubs. It is

impressive how they have managed to mix formal garden hedges

and statues with a more wild natural look. I’m sure it gave people lots

of ideas.

Julie and Jon’s garden used a lot of Kilburnie stone as features throughout their garden with a majestic set of steps at the entrance.

Also a new water feature showcased some very clever rock work by stone mason extraordinaire Jon Chandler! Julie and Jon have

had to battle annually with their resident wallabies and have done a great job preserving their plants for the Expo.

Gill Millie once again amazed with her very interesting garden that opens out to different scenic views all around her property. Gill also

had some spectacular rock work done by the late Bluey Stuchberry. Gill also had one of the largest orchids ever on her lovely patio.

The Lions ladies did a wonderful job providing the Devonshire teas at the Chalmers and Lockhart residences, with both gardens being

wonderful places to sit relax and chat over a cuppa. As always Faye, David, Tanya and Nick were delightful hosts and I suspect had

trouble getting everyone out at the end of the day.

While at the Community House people enjoyed a lunch of gourmet sandwiches, slice, cake, fruit salad and cream provided by our

wonderful catering ladies. After lunch many people attended a workshop run by Jude and Marg, where they made their own decora-

tive plant pot with a succulent in it to take home. $832.50 was raised the Lions Aged Care Fund—thank you all who made this day

possible.

The Wedderburn Photographic Group exhibits at Coach House Gallery

What a lovely experience it is to wander along the main street of Wedderburn…then back through time…with a visit to the General Store Museum. The museum houses one of the finest examples of a merchants store - with its original fittings, fixtures and stock, early printing presses from the Wedderburn News, photographic history of

the township at the turn of last century and a large barn of old horse drawn vehicles in beautiful condition.

The museum melds wonderfully with an adjoining artist’s exhibition space, the Coach House Gallery. Brian Boy-ton, one of the museum’s historians, is currently sharing an exhibition of his contemporary photography organ-ised by the Wedderburn Photography Group. The members, from an array of artistic backgrounds, have created

a feast of beautiful landscapes and wildlife that encapsulate the intimate beauty of this district and beyond.

Brian and his contemporaries, Wendy Harvey, David Thomas, Robert Scholes, Ric Raftis, Greg Deimos, Pat Lee and Deidre Oswald have works for sale at the gallery until December. The exhibition opened in early Octo-

ber and has attracted both media interest and numerous admirers.

The Wedderburn Photographic Group meet at 10am, the first Monday of each month, at Jacka Park to arrange their social photographic agenda. They share both field trips and online critiques to keep the shutters clicking

and pool resources and skills to create an enjoyable ever changing challenge of visual imagery.

The group currently has twenty members and welcomes all newcomers to its ranks. There is a $20 annual fee

and a great deal to be gained by joining these talented photographers in their quest for the perfect image.

WEDDERBURN LIONS INDUCT 5 NEW MEMBERS!

On Wednesday 21 October, 2015 the Wedderburn Lions Club had the pleasure

of inducting five new members to its service club.

Jill and Barry Bolwell, Ray Thompson, Jeff Loone and David Vaughan, all new residents to the

town, have generously put their hands up to be a part of our Lions Club and help serve the

community of Wedderburn.

Lion Lance Ward capably conducted the induction ceremony in front of members and their

partners after partaking in a scrumptious meal provided by the Lions ladies.

Lion President Leo Matthews congratulated all members on joining Wedderburn Lions and also

thanked their sponsors for encouraging them to do so. Leo thought it was timely that we had

this induction with the huge Hamish and Andy weekend coming up. He said the club would

need all hands on deck for the day as we would most likely be cooking from midday until

around 8pm for an estimated 5000 people plus!!!

Wedderburn Lions is a great way to meet people while at the same time serve your community.

Lions meet the first and third Wednesday of the month. The first Wednesday is a business

meeting and the third Wednesday is a dinner meeting. For more information contact Lions

The Coach House Gallery/Museum are completely self funded and receive no financial support from anyone. Grants that they apply for do not allow for financial support only equipment.

Exhibitors at the gallery do not pay to hang their exhibitions but contribute 20% commission of all sales to the gallery. Quite of lot of gallery funds are spent on maintenance work in the museum and we are forever grateful for the various trades men and women who help us in this area.

We are all volunteers who give of our time in order to provide a cultural and historic experience for those who visit us.

Therefore it is important that we maintain a strong membership base. So why not become a member today! The money we charge for entry into the museum is $5 or $3 concession. This fee helps us to pay for service charges, phone, power, water and insurance. So we are grateful for your support.

WEDDERBURN WOOL EXPO COMMUNITY WALL HANGING

About twenty five years ago, Maureen Turnbull coordinated a community project to make a wall hanging. All local community

groups and organisations were invited to contribute a block, which was to have a wool theme. The hanging was completed in

1990.

After being missing for a number of years, the wall hanging was found and hung for the first time in years at the Engine Rally.

Wedderburn Country Women’s Association Branch

And now we are one (year old)!

This month we held our Annual General Meeting. East Wimmera Group President Cherie Duncan and Group Secretary Eileen Tillig also

attended. The AGM was a great opportunity to reflect on what the Wedderburn CWA has achieved in the past 12 months. The list is sur-

prisingly long.

We have held 11 meetings, had many guest speakers ranging from talks on health to adapting to migration into a foreign culture. We

have shared our knowledge and skills in the culinary arts and had some great fun activities too. The branch has made their presence

known at the Wedderburn Farmers Market, and the kindergarten fundraiser .

We have a Facebook page and regular reports in “Scoop and Scuttlebutt”. Our members got to know a lot about how CWA works and

have enjoyed social interactions with other branches in the East Wimmera Group as well as getting an insight into the very big picture

when they attended the State Conference held in

Bendigo this year.

Beyond the Backyard.

Fungi

With Annette Robinson

This group of fungi popped up in the front yard in early August.

They lasted a week or so and disappeared. Six weeks later

they appeared again, and there were a lot more of them. A

few warm days, and they quickly dried up.

Fungi are most fascinating. They are an important indicator of

soil ecology and have a really important role in the health of soil

by helping to break down material like old wood. The prolifera-

tion of kangaroo droppings nearby may have been relative to

the health of this fungi.

There are literally thousands of different fungi and the identification of them has been made much easier by many internet sites.

Once you start to take notice of the characteristics for identification they become even more fascinating.
