Inside the front cover of the Martin Luther German Bible1, printed in Nurnberg, Germany, in

1752, there is a list of names including Johann Gottlieb Klugh, born January 3, 1761, on the

reserve side of the page, there is a death notice of Anna Maria Klug, who died November 1,

1814.

I had always assumed these children2 were born in Germany. I have a sheet of paper written by

Jacob H. Klugh (1845-1939), brother of Barbara Klugh Shindle (Mabel Musser Kraiss’

mother) stating that Gottfried was born in Saxony, Germany (he has generations mixed up). My

assumption was wrong.

I also have a fragment of marriage notice stating:

“ ,That Gottfried Klug

Henry Muhlenberg V.D.M.”

When we lived in Houston, Texas, in the 1970s, I

did research at the Clayton Branch of the Houston

Public Library. This library is devoted exclusively

to genealogy. One day I noticed a book

containing (among other info), steamship

passenger lists. There was a Charles Klugh who

had sailed from Rotterdam, Netherlands, to

Philadelphia. This meant nothing to me except the

name was Klugh.

Trinity Lutheran Church, is situated 31 South Duke

Street, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. (Just down the

street from where I had worked.) Trinity Church

was organized in 1729, first church erected in 1734, present building dedicated in 1766, with

entrance facing Duke Street, tower and steeple added in 1794, and in 1853 the vestibules added

which changed entrance to right angle to street. Barb Kraiss Miller4 took organ lessons from

Harry Sykes at this church. Trinity Church was enlarge with parish house and chapel in 1955

which necessitated removal of most graves to mass burial elsewhere.

In 1977, I decided to write to the Trinity Church Archivist, and enclosed xerox of marriage

fragment and asked some questions. The researcher returned Xerox from Pastor’s Book

showing marriage record of Gottfried Klugh had indeed married Anna Brubeck on December

28, 1781. I again wrote sending Xerox of birth records and again received a prompt reply. This

time I received a list of birth records with almost identical dates to those shown in the Bible.

Also other info. I was elated to know Trinity Church had very complete records of the Klughs

from 1752 to and including the birth of Barbara K. Shindle, born in 1852.

4 Barbara Kraiss Miller is the sister of Ruth Gable.

Trinity Church records show:

Carl Kluge arrived in Philadelphia on ship “President” Sept. 27, 1752, from Saxony, Germany,

from Rotterdam. He married Susanna Hohn (1726-1786) on March 17, 1755. He served as a

church Warden 1757, 1765-1767; church Elder 1772-1778, 1780-1783. Born 1728, died

October 2, 1782. I have a hand carved wood block “C. Klugh” which was probably made for

him when he was in flour milling business. The wood block was used to print his name of the

flour sacks.

Son Gottfried Klug (third born of six children) born January 3, 1761, married Anna Marie

Brubeck (1764-1814) on December 28, 1781. He served in the Revolutionary War in 17825.

According to Jacob H. Klugh (1845-1939), Gottfried conducted a bakery business at the corner

of West King and Prince6. Later he purchased land on the Little Conestoga near Levans Mill

7.

The map below shows the locations of Millersville and Levans Mill. He died in 1825. He and

Anna were buried on land that was developed for housing in 1970 and are now buried in the

Mennonite Cemetery, Millersville Pike and Hambright Road, Millersville.

5 Letter from Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Box 1026,

Harrisburg, PA, dated May 9, 1978, states “This is to certify that one Godfrid Klug was enrolled as a Private in

Eighth Class, Captain Jacob Brand’s Second Company, Fourth Battalion, Lancaster County Militia, according to the

evidence of a Class Roll dated August 3, 1782. There is a similar letter for Charles Klug, Godfrid’s brother.

7 About George Levan’s Mill : Source: http://www.millpictures.com/Mills/details.cfm?millid=717

Isaac & Elizabeth Nestleroth(Nestleroad) built the current 40'X 65' 3.5 story brick mill along the Little Conestoga

Creek at Fairview Park in Manor Township in 1853. The previous mill, of 30'X 30' stone was built by Rudy Herr

before 1759, then sold in 1812 to Benjamin Kauffman. This old mill was owned by Jonas Eby from 1821 through

1824. Some years lapse, then Martin Harnish put the mill up for sale in 1844. In 1852,Isaac Nestleroth purchased the

mill, builds the new brick mill a year later, and sells to Jacob N. Metzler in 1857. George Levan is the next owner,

keeping the mill ten years before selling to John Breneman in 1870. Breneman's "Willow Grove Mill" was sold to B.

Eshback (Eshbach) in 1899 and was closed in the early to mid 1900's by Harry H. Eshbach. The mill was renovated

to serve as a manufacturing facility and storage for fertilizers, with many of the window and door openings

concreted in, by 1987 and known as 'Marglo Co.'.

The ruins of George Levan’s Mill are located near were PA 741 crosses Little Conestoga Creek, probably near

Manor Township Community Park, near Fairview Park, PA, about 1.4 miles south of the intersection with PA 462.

Gottfried Klugh's Military Service8

Private "Godfrid Klug" served in Jacob Brand's 4th Battalion, 2nd Company (Manor Township,

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania) according to a 1782 muster list. He was in the 8th class. He's

listed on the second page of the list. This is the service that Ruth Gable got the DAR

membership for.9

Klugh Family Cemetery17

Gottfried and Anna Maria Klug and their young son John Gottfried were buried in the Klugh

family cemetery which was found by children playing in a field near Millerville, PA in 1970.

The graves and their headstones were moved to Millerville Mennonite Cemetery. Below is a

1978 photo of the Klug headstones in their new location taken by Joyce Darby who was one of

the adults who investigated the children's discovery.

Son Jacob Klugh (third born of seven children) born in June 6, 1788, married Maria Peters

(1788-) March 28, 1813. Jacob died in 1864.

The "Black Bear" tavern was built about the time the Columbia and Lancaster turnpike was

completed. It was a two-story log house, located on the south side of the turnpike, about four

and a quarter miles east from Columbia (east edge of Mountville, PA). Jacob Klugh kept the

tavern for fifty years. He erected a two story brick addition at the east end. It was a great resort

for sleighing parties, both from Columbia and Lancaster. Occasionally they met at the tavern

about the same time, when an inevitable conflict ensued between them. This ill-feeling between

parties from these two places continued for many years. When one side came off the victors, the

defeated party would rally in a day or two and bring with them some of their best fighters, and

then the palm of victory rested with them. Mrs. Klugh was sister of Abraham Peters, and she

was a most excellent landlady. The tavern is now kept by J. Gram.18

There was a sparse settlement to the east (around the present Turkey Hill convenience store) that

consisted of a few log houses and a hostelry known as Black Bear, which was located just east of

334 East Main Street. The hostelry was a place that offered overnight accommodations to

travelers. In those days, before the advent of railroads and other forms of mass transit, travel

was long and arduous. Hostelries along a well-traveled route like the Lancaster and

Susquehanna Turnpike (as our own Main Street in town was part of) were essential. They were

an oasis in an otherwise unforgiving landscape. Already in existence when the Turnpike

Company was incorporated in 1793, the Black Bear Hotel had a 30 foot x 60 foot dance floor

added in the 1800's. Later when the trolley line was built through Mountville, a person could

literally step off the trolley and onto the Black Bear's front porch. The settlement which

included the Black Bear was known as "Sich Dich Fore", which literally beans "Before You" or

"Ahead of You" or simply "Look Ahead". In time this small group of houses and the Black

Bear Hotel would become part of Mountville proper, but that day was in the future. We wonder

if any of the residents then could "Look Ahead" to see the changes in store! The tavern was torn

down in 1908 and its 60 foot beams were used to build a barn by John Lockard, a well known

local florist.19

Today there are two log cabins located just west of the corner of East Main Street and Spring

Street across the street from the site of the Black Bear Tavern which were part of the "Sich Dich

Fore" settlement. The 1864 map on the next page shows 4 buildings across the street from the Jb

Klugh Hotel. In 1875 and 1899 Jacob's daughter Catherine Klugh Gable owns property across

Spring Street from where the cabins are located today. The 1870 census lists Catherine Gable as

"keeping hotel"

Daughter Barbara Klugh Musser Shindle

(fourth born of six children), born April 1, 1852,

probably born in house near Black Bear Tavern.

Married Amos Musser, October 20, 1873, and

lived on farm outside of Mountville on land that is

now part of the development where Kathy and

Doug Hengst live on Spring Hill Lane,

Mountville. Amos died in 1887. Barbara

possibly moved to 51 South Manor Street.

October 20, 1892, she married Michael G.

Shindle and moved to 75 South Manor Street into

a large two-story brick house (house was built by

M. G. Shindle and his first wife, Barbara Stauffer,

in 1862 – which I find very odd as this was during

the Civil War) but there is a threshold stone

engraved with their names and date). This house

is situated along the Pennsylvania Railroad and

across the street from the railroad passenger

station. According to Beers22

, 1903, Mr. Shindle

was tobacco and coal dealer as well as fire

insurance agent, later a freight and ticket agent for

Pennsylvania Railway, and one of the

incorporators of Mountville National Bank, situated

across from 28 East Main Street). Upon Mr.

Shindle’s death April 24, 1916, Barbara moved to 28

East Main Street, Mountville, and continued to live

there until her death in 1938. Before M. G. died, they

made long train trips to New Orleans, by boat to

Havana, train to visit son Stanton working in LaJunta,

Colorado, and on to West Coast, as well as almost

annual trips to Ocean Grove, New Jersey.

Gable (Catherine Klugh Gable, daughter of Jacob Klugh, wife of William Gable).

Daughter Mabel Elizabeth Musser Kraiss

(fourth born of four children) born

September 14, 1885, in or near Mountville,

married Charles Louis Kraiss October 17,

1917, in Philadelphia. Mabel lived in

Mountville until marriage, went to a

business college and worked as

stenographer for her step-father in the Penn

Mutual Fire Insurance Association.

Frequently visited her sister Miami, eleven

years older, who lived in Philadelphia.

Became friends of Florence Ingham

(Crompton) who lived on the same block

and probably introduced her to Charles.

Mabel went to Ocean Grove, New Jersey,

for summer vacations as well as visiting

distant relatives in Medina County, Ohio.

In 1923 or ’24, they moved to Mountville

into the other half of double house where

Grandma Shindle lived (who felt she

required family nearby though in early

seventies and still traveled to shore and

Ohio). B.K.M.S. was bossy and tended to

“rule” Mabel’s family. Charles took

correspondence courses as well as night

school at Temple College, Philadelphia, in 1906. He became a Mason, June 1911, in Concordia

23

Everts and Stewart, “Combination Atlas Map of Lancaster County, PA”, Philadelphia, 1875.

Lodge 67, Philadelphia, and eventually became 32nd

degree Mason. He mostly worked in

Mechanical Drawing with Westinghouse in Philadelphia, Armstrong Cork and Lancaster Iron

Works, and lastly York Ice and Machinery, York. Ours was the first house to have an electric

stove when we moved to Mountville.

Daughter Ruth Musser Kraiss Gable (first born of two daughters) was born in Philadelphia,

November 10, 1918. Ruth attended Mountville Public School, then graduated from Columbia

High School, June 1936. Her sister, Barb, was family favorite, especially with Barbara Klugh

Shindle (for whom she was named); Grandma would buy new clothes for her while Ruth wore

remade hand-me-downs. Her parents always made her feel not very bright though she was in

top third of her high school class. In January, 1938, she completed Secretarial Course of

Lancaster Business College, and had a variety of secretarial jobs until her marriage. Growing

up, the family did above average amount of travel for that era, frequently visiting first cousins

(Leidy) and family in or near Hatfield and Souderton, summer trips to Ohio, in 1927, an

extended trip to Birmingham, Alabama, to visit Deacon family (Betty Olson); Century of

Progress in Chicago, 1932; in 1946, family going to California on six week trip.

Ruth, Alice, Martha and Charles Gable 1963

Married Charles Marvin Gable November 22, 1950, at First Congregational Church, Berkeley,

California, born October 15, 1918, in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1936, Charles became a member of

the National Honor Society, graduated from Cleveland Heights High School, Ohio, 1937. (His

Dad, Charles D. Gable, was president of the school board). In 1940, he was admitted to Tau

Beta Pi honor society, and graduated from Case School of Applied Science in 1941 with a B.A.

degree in Chemical Engineering; he received a Master’s Degree in 1943, with a thesis about

Sulfuric Acid.

They purchased their first house, two bedrooms and bath

at 1015 Elm Court, El Cerrito, California, shortly after

their marriage and lived there until Martha was born

when they moved to 815 Rosedale Avenue, Lafayette in

1956. In 1972, Charles was transferred by Shell

Development to Houston, Texas, living at 5946

Rutherglenn, until 1979 when he retired after 36 years; he

worked his entire career for Shell. On retirement, they

moved to 806B Mormon Place, Las Cruces, New

Mexico.

The family traveled extensively while the girls were

growing up. Each summer for vacation, they took a long

trip – sometimes back to visit family in Ohio and

Pennsylvania; national parks; several Sierra Club

Wilderness Threshold trips in the Sierra. Ruth was

active in Girl Scouts and Parent Teacher’s Association

receiving special awards from both these organizations.

Also she sewed almost 100% all the dresses, skirts, jumpers, blouses, play clothes, and coats for

Alice, Martha and herself. Then she became interested in handwork, doing a great deal of

needlepoint – personally designed handbags, lots of pillows with a variety of stitches, several

needlepoint seats, several pictures, most prized of which is hot air balloon designed by Royal

School Needlepoint in London. Ruth has written trip accounts, including extensive writing of

foreign trips. In 1979, became member of Daughters of American Revolution after receiving

meticulous records from Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She is interested in

Unied States postal stamps (purchased Rosi and Phil Minch’s collection) and acquired antique

post card collection of Mabel Kraiss.

Daughter Barbara Musser Kraiss Miller (second born of two daughters) was born in

Philadelphia, November 7, 1920, married Willis C. Miller, July 5, 1947 in Mountville.

Trinity Reformed Church, Mountville, was organized June 12, 1898, with ninety people present.

Church building dedicated September 2, 1906. Though our ancestors were not charter members,

three windows of the sanctuary are reminders of them: One given by Eliza Klugh (1822-1906),

one by Barbara K. Shindle (1852-1938), and one by Mabel E. Musser (1885-1967). I am not

certain if all of these large windows on side walls of sanctuary proper or if one of them might be

in the rear portion; but I believe the names of at least two of them have disappeared.

Researching documents, I found that names were not consistently the same, i.e. Klug, Kluge,

Klugh; Gottfried had various ways to spell; Gebel, Gabel, Gable. This history was compiled

from various family documents, Trinity Lutheran Church records, and court records.

Additional Klugh Research

Alice Kalush

In 2010 I used RootsWeb.com to further trace the Klugh family line back to the town of Pegau in

Saxony, Germany. Pegau is a village some 26 kilometers south-southwest of the Leipzig city

center in what was in the 18th century the electorate of Saxony. The information found on

RootsWeb.com about the Klugh family in Germany is based on the research of John A.Mahey of

Harrisburg, PA (another descendant of Carl Klugh). Records for most of the Klugh family in

Germany were found in the records of the Lutheran Church in Pegau.

Caspar Kluge, Johann Caspar Kluge and Carl Klugh were all bakers.

Carl Klugh was a member of the Union Fire Company No. 1 in Lancaster, PA.

Suspected Connection between Klughs and Gables

I found records for two couples living near Millersville, in Manor Township, Lancaster County,

Pennsylvania between 1810 and 1825 which later moved to Mountville.

Jacob Klugh (1788-1864) Jacob Gable (1793-1872)

and and

Mary Peters (1788-?) Elizabeth Hambright (1793-1852)

Children: Children:

Catherine Klugh (1814-1904) married William Gable (1817-1851)

Charles Klugh (1816-1862) married Elizabeth Gable (1822-1908)

I was unable to find any connection with Benjamin Gable (1806-1895) who was born in

Pennsylvania.
