BROWARD COUNTY

Public artwork, Vendor with Walkman, by former Broward County artist Duane Hanson (January 17, 1925 – January 6, 1996), received a 'dusting' in April by conservation professionals Stephan Tugrul and Tin Ly. The popular artwork, featuring a seated 30+ year-old male wearing a red T-shirt, blue pants, baseball cap and listening to a walkman radio/cassette during a break, is located in the Departure Level, Terminal 3, at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Broward County received an award from the National Endowment for the Arts' Save Outdoor Sculptures! program in 1995 for their initiative to allocate 15 percent of all public art funds to the conservation, maintenance and curatorial needs of each piece of artwork. FORT MYERS

1) The national public art registry cultureNOW has chosen Fort Myers as its featured collection for the month of May. It is just the latest organization/publication to recognize the strides Fort Myers has taken to reinvent itself as an arts and cultural (and convention) destination, and it specifically identified the Edison & Ford Winter Estates as a repository for a significant portion of Fort Myers' public artworks. 2) Rosa Lowinger & Associates, a Miami-based conservation firm with a specialty in public art,

recently conducted a detailed survey of three historic public art monuments for the City of Ft. Myers, FL. One, the Tootie McGregor fountain is 100 year old and the first piece of public art in Ft. Myers. The Public Art committee has $15,000 in its coffers for repair and maintenance to cover 21 sculpture and more than two dozen paintings, prints and photographs. They are considering asking for private donations. The estimate on the Tootie McGregor fountain was $65,000 alone.

3) Another memorial, the Robert E Lee Memorial recently received protective fencing by the

United Daughters of the Confederacy. Without the fence, the marble base was an attractive target for skateboarders. More information at New fencing added to the Robert E. Lee Memorial in time for county's anniversary.

4) Chicago artist Barbara Cooper has installed a new artwork in the main library of Florida

Gulf Coast University, Ft. Myers. This Art in State Building’s funded project is 36' long x 12' high x 8' wide; and hangs from cables in the library’s atrium lobby. Titled “Ecotone”, this sculpture is based on imagery that conveys a sense of flowing water (and metamorphic ally, the flow of knowledge and ideas). The artwork is made out of curved panels of wood veneer.
