While working to ensure the protection and preservation of existing murals, RPM recognizes that many common issues that murals face could have been mitigated with careful planning and preparation. They have documented best practices gleaned from muralists, conservators, art historians, arts administrators, materials scientists, and engineers in this website: www.heritagepreservation.org/RPM/MuralBestPractices BROWARD COUNTY 1) The metal sculpture Metamorphosis by artist JoeSam (b. 1939) has recently been restored by a professional conservator. The 90" x 98" x 20" painted metal artwork had deteriorated due to exposure to environmental elements and mold. Metamorphosis was installed at the Deerfield Beach Percy White Branch Library in 1993 and at the time the artist stated, “I want to bring some fun, humor and warmth to the patrons of the library.” The African American artist aspires to instill a sense of community pride and ownership in all of the public art he creates.

BROWARD COUNTY 1) The metal sculpture Metamorphosis by artist JoeSam

2) The Community Foundation of Broward is investing $500,000 per year for the next five years on the “Art of Community” project which will use art to bring community together, including placement of sidewalk art in Hollywood and “Umbrellas” in Lauderhill. 3) Two part-time job openings: Arts Management Specialist II – Public Art & Design. Closing date 9/13/13

a) Part time - This is complex professional arts management work and includes managing all activities associated

with the conservation of public art projects for the Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design Program. The

conservation manager reports to the Public Art & Design Administrator and is responsible for planning, organizing

and coordinating all aspects of conservation projects, performing minor conservation such as graffiti removal,

preparing contracts, condition reports, conducting research and collections management. Work involves

considerable interaction with the public including artists, agency representatives, and selection panels.

b) Part time -This is complex professional arts management work and includes managing all activities associated

with the commissioning of public art projects for the Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design Program. The project

manager is responsible for overseeing the artist selection process, planning, organizing and coordinating

installation of public art projects occurring across a broad range of County Divisions and Departments with the

exception of the Aviation Department. Work involves considerable interaction with the public including artists,

agency representatives, selection panels and Construction Management Division personnel. Duties include:

development of draft project scope of work in consultation with partner agency; drafting the Call to Artists,

overseeing the selection process (Orientation/Shortlisting, Finalist Interviews, Design Review); contract

development; project management through all stages of the project.

CLEARWATER 1) Public Art in Private Development Transitioned to Voluntary Program

In response to the Supreme Court of the United States’ decision in the case of Koontz v. St. Johns River Water

Management District, the City of Clearwater has transitioned its Public Art in Private Development Program to a

voluntary participation program. All developers in the City of Clearwater will be encouraged to include public

artwork in the design and construction of current and future projects. The City will continue its investment in

public artwork through the percent-for-art program for capital improvement projects and will encourage developers

to follow suit.

2) New Artworks for Sculpture360: Season VI to be Installed in October Three new artworks have been selected and will be reviewed by Clearwater City Council in early September.

Sculptures by artists Nicole Beck (Chicago, IL), Hanna Jubran (Grimesland, NC) and Merle Randolph (Marion,

OH) will be installed in late October and will be on exhibition in downtown Clearwater’s Cleveland Street District

through October 2014.

CORAL SPRINGS The Coral Springs Public Art Program is still in the midst of creating its newest entry way piece on East Atlantic

Ave, ColorPlay. This large scaled sculpture is a commissioned piece created by Stephen Canneto, an artist based

out of Ohio. The artwork is in celebration of the City’s 50th Anniversary and was tentatively to be installed for

permanent display at the end of July 2013, now scheduled for the end of September.

The City of Coral Springs Public Art Program also has chosen The McMow Art Glass Company to create a tile

mosaic mural on the three outside walls of three buildings in Mullins Park.

FORT MYERS 1) More articles about Fort Myers first public artwork, the Tootie McGregor Fountain that celebrated its

centennial this month: a) Ava Roeder and Jared Beck reflect on Tootie McGregor Terry's legacy; b) Tootie McGregor Fountain celebrates centennial on Saturday, August 17; c) http://www.news-press.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2013308180044.

2) Local Fort Myers News-Press journalist Amy Bennett Williams wrote a flattering article for Sunday's Tropicalia insert titled "Fort Myers public artworks tell stories."

3) An 1880 Italian marble sculpture, Lorelei, is the City’s oldest Public Art artwork. The work was donated to the library in the 1950s and decapitated in an act of vandalism in 1997. It was going to be left behind when the library moves to a new home this month. To the rescue - the Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council will clean, conserve and move her to their Bromeliad Garden. Photos show the sculpture in 1930 in the private garden of Evelyn Rea and as it is today.

GAINESVILLE

1) Gainesville public artist Leslie Tharp has created a set of 3 site-specific sculptural park signs for the Hogtown Creek Headwaters Nature Park. The sculptural sign holders are inspired by the form of Live Oak branches and are hand-forged from mild steel using a coal-fired forge and anvil in her studio. Small hand-forged details such as butterflies, a frog, and Air Potato vines were added to each sculptural sign holder to indicate the subject of the information signs that will be mounted in them. 2) Gainesville public artist James Lasley is working a 10-week contract job on Ascension Island, S. Atlantic, UK, currently collecting bones, stones, sea-shells and other found objects, for the piece called "Ascension Fish-Bird-Man."

HOLLYWOOD

JACKSONVILLE University of North Florida’s sculpture professor Jenny Hager received a “Spark” award of $22,500 to create a

2-year long public art sculpture loan program in the downtown area with related events and lectures.

KEY WEST 1) Fourteen artists submitted their qualifications in the biannual RFQ from which the Art in Public Places

program selects artists. Selections will be made this month.

2) Mural and paintings conservator Viviana Dominguez, Art Conservators Lab, just finished the removal of two WPA mural paintings from the Glynn Archer Elementary School. The murals by William Hoffman were installed in the school auditorium in 1938. The paintings were surface cleaned and prepared to be transported to the Custom House Museum where the conservation treatment will take place during the fall. LAKE WORTH

A privately-funded mural at Daves last Resort, 632 Lake Ave, by Tiffani Beasi, Eduardo Mendieta, Lee Krull &

Judy Dempsey has been completed. The LULA Lake Worth Arts program sent out the call and helped the

property owner through the approval process through the City

MATLACHA Because of all the attention that the neighboring city of Fort Myers' public art collection has been receiving over the past year or so, the town of Matlacha is now installing a couple of public art projects sponsored primarily by its local Chamber of Commerce. Here's an article on the latest undertaking by local artist Leoma Lovegrove, a mural that will greet visitors to the historic island fishing community as they come across the new Matlacha Bridge

1) UCF has a new AiSB sculpture in the rotunda of Classroom II. Malcolm Robertson’s work is a 13-sided,

radial structure containing 50 stars with mirrored “bays” using solaglass reflective 2-way mirror.

Robert Stackhouse

1) Local artists Carol Mickett, Thaddeus Root and Robert Stackhouse have been chosen to design, create and install 10 artistic bus stops. They will receive $25,000 for research (including getting public opinion) and $500,000 for creating and installing the work. 2) Local public artist Cecelia Lueza has been selected by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities selected to create a mural based on the Latin-American history and culture in DC. SOUTH FLORIDA A documentary film project, EcoArt: It’s Only Natural!, now in production will feature numerous EcoArt projects.

Eleven of the 17 projects that have emerged across South Florida since EcoArt South Florida was established in

TAMARAC The new Tamarac Bench Design project was awarded to Jim Gallucci of Greensboro, NC and CERO Design of

San Juan, PR. Both artists were awarded $20,000 contracts to developed designs for benches that can be bid
