The 32’ by 16’ by 32 ‘ pointillist ship sculpture by artist Ralph Helmick and associate artist Stuart Schechter which was installed in the lobby of Terminal 21 at Point Everglades has been reconfigured to adapt to a more central location in the terminal and displayed with additional lighting, within the passenger waiting area. Fata Morgana, the artwork’s title, means an optical illusion of water, also known as a mirage. More than 2,400 small pewter elements were hung by nearly 1,700 fine cables with incredible precision on an overhead suspension grid and configured to form the ship and its reflection on the sea. The intent was to evoke a journey of the mind as well as a literal ocean voyage, with the core image being a hallucinatory cruise ship.

CORAL SPRINGS

One of the purchased sculptures from the Sculpture on Sample 2012 Program , Cosmological Principle by Hanna Jubran has been moved from 9530 West Sample Road to its permanent location in Betti Stradling Park. It was purchased by the Public Art Committee. The Public Art Program was established in 2003 and is funded by public art impact fees from private developers. No tax dollars are used in funding the Public Art Program.

FORT MYERSCity Council has not yet taken up the revisions to Ordinance 118.7.7 that the Public Art Committee referred to City Staff in November. It is scheduled to be considered by the Planning Board on August 7, and will be placed on the City Council's agenda some time after that. If adopted as proposed, it will replace the City's current optional public art ordinance with one that requires 1 percent for public art on all CIP and private development occurring within the City of Fort Myers.

GAINESVILLE

1)Artist James Lasley installed "Sun King - Toltec," in the Sun Center in June, and will be installing, "Cloud-Cycle" outside there this week. This three-month commission came about when the Sun Center owner saw the artist moving the sculpture on a trailer and approached him about placing it on his property.

2) Kenneth Von Roenn will be joining Florida State University this month as the new Director of the Master Craftman Studio. He will also serve as Associate Director of the Public Art/Architectural Art Specialized Study. JACKSONVILLE1. The Art in Public Places (APP) program commissioned an advocacy video on the Chamblins Uptown-

Shaun Thurston mural for $700. It will live among 2-3 other APP videos/presentations on the new Cultural Council website in the fall. http://vimeo.com/65829001

2. The Cultural Council received 27 Spark Grant applications in total. Slightly more individual artists than cultural organizations applied and the majority of applicants were from Duval County (19 of 27). A variety of cultural disciplines were represented, however the majority of applicants described themselves as multi-disciplinary. The Review Committee selected the finalists in June. They will be referred to the APP Committee in July for consideration. Finalists proposals will be distributed for review prior to the APP Committee on July 10. From there, the finalists will be reviewed by the Cultural Council Board of Directors and the Downtown Development Review Board.

3.

Talking Continents public art piece has been experiencing technical problems with the lighting since the initial installation and retrofit in 2003-2004. SMG and Jax Stage Lighting have identified a new unit. The purchase would include lighting materials for 6 figures and 3 extra units for back up. Approx. cost: $12,000.

4. The Yates Mural Project project is going well, but there have been challenges, especially with the less

experienced Milagros team. There has been great press coverage both in print, on Facebook, and

television. The First Coast News story was played for the committee resulting in discussion about how artists might be given more preparation for interaction with the media. Concern about the media person being uncertified to be in the lift was also discussed. Dedication ceremony for the Yates is August 7, at first Wednesday Artwalk, 6-7 pm.

5. A new glass, ceramic and stone mural, “Celestial Playground”, by Korean artist Amy Cheng has been installed at the Jacksonville International Airport. Cheng is a nationally acclaimed artist, having provided other high-caliber works in Chicago, New York and Seattle. The total cost of the project was $75,000. 60% of that fund was used for the actual mural construction. The left-over funds were used to buy display cases and to create materials for presentations. Miotto Mosica Studios will fabricate the project. Cheng’s proposal was one of approximately 60 received.

6.

Orlando public artist Martha Lent was commissioned by Christina Foard Hunady, Director of the Arts in Medicine Program

at UF Health Shands Jacksonville who collaborated with her on a design that would reflect the concept of hope and healing. The resulting large scale wall mounted sculpture (8’ x 26 ‘) includes 80 individual pieces hand shaped and painted on wood. "Celebration of Hope

and Creativity" has been installed on a wall in a hallway of the first floor of the building. The hallway is a high-traffic transitional point for patient and staff experience which connects the Emergency Room to the Pharmacy. “The organic and nature based elements are freely flowing through space, creating a sense of calm and colorful tranquility”, says the artist.

7. Former FAPAP Board member, Cabeth Cornelius has moved on from her role at Harbinger and the billboard gallery project.
