BOYNTON BEACH A free Outdoor and Indoor Kinetic Exhibit, along with Symposium presentations to stimulate the creativity in all of us will be held February 8 – 10. Some of the objectives of this biennial International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium are to:

• Celebrate the dynamic and compelling aspects of today’s kinetic art to the general public, public art professionals, as well as art and museum curators, and gallerists.

• Build public and private interest in collecting and/or commissioning kinetic art through exposure to its rich historical context and through exhibitions of its various contemporary forms.

• Motivate educators to incorporate kinetic art into the S.T.E.A.M. curriculum. The importance of addng “art” to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) is to utilize both sides of the brain and to make learning “fun.”

• Stimulate creative applications of various technologies in kinetic art, including “green” technologies. Learn more by visiting: http://intlkineticartevent.org/

BROWARD

Artist Cheryl Foster recently completed an artwork for Broward County’s Public Art & Design Program, located in Roosevelt Gardens Park – a 5-acre neighborhood park with a 4,500 sq. ft. community center that opened in November 2007.

Foster created a multi-piece artwork that is located in the computer room and lobby of the community center, in the form of a series of tableaus that illustrate desired themes: education, family values, diversity, sharing, learning, parents teaching and sharing with children, and strong male presence. For example, Rock Solid, illustrates a strong family unit connecting to technology; Science Project displays an elder helping with a volcano science project; and Layup Shot shows a basketball duo.

The series of paintings are adhered to dibond, a lightweight, aluminum composite-clad substrate used for interior and exterior signs. The paintings are displayed above eye level, and appear to float on the walls.

CORAL GABLES A temporary display of a sculpture entitled “The Spiral” by Italian artist Enzo Carnebianca is now on the plaza of the Coral Gables Museum. Mr. Carnebianca’s work is in prestigious collections throughout the world, such as the Vatican in Rome. Ca’ d’Oro Art Gallery, generously provided this exhibition to the City.

JACKSONVILLE

1) At PhotoJax 2013, the Jacksonville Photography Festival, a section of Laura street in front of MOCA Jacksonville was closed off Jan. 25 for the viewing party of #PhotoJax500, a community-response Instagram photo contest partially funded by Art in Public Places. Five hundred photos from Instagram users in Jacksonville were displayed on television screens in the street. The CoRK Arts District, Jacksonville’s new, edgy and growing artist colony, displayed prints of the #PhotoJax500 winners at their opening reception. The #PhotoJax500 presentation will be featured on an interactive video kiosk, as a new acquisition to the existing APP photo permanent collection located in the Main Library downtown. http://vimeo.com/58141969 Budget: $2,000

2) Clear Channel Outdoor is collaborating with Florida Mining Gallery and Harbinger to bring public art to Jacksonville. Beginning January 15, 2013 digital billboards throughout the city will display art along with advertising. The Highway Gallery – a city wide public art campaign – will feature work by Jacksonville artist TONY RODRIGUES, momentarily transforming space typically used for commerce and giving the public a chance to experience the magic of art.

Tony Rodrigues is no stranger to graphic imagery used as commentary. His past work includes line drawing, painting, print making and collage often incorporating appropriated imagery and graphic elements that he then uses to tell a sometimes mysterious story Highway Gallery images available as C-prints upon request, contact Florida Mining Gallery. MIAMI BEACH The contracts and procurement approval process in Miami Beach have become more extensive and lengthier, affecting public art projects. There is currently a complete overhaul of the procurement process due to public corruption charges that the City’s former Procurement Director is facing. More can be read at http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/10/22/3061362/ex-miami-beach-procurement-official.html

NAPLES The city’s latest piece of public sculpture is by artist Kathy Spalding who studied at the Pratt Institute and now does large scale commissions internationally. She designed the extruded bronze sculpture for the new Robb & Stucky furniture store. The public art requirement for commercial and municipal construction in the City of Naples is $1 per square foot. Mr. Chen, who owns Robb & Stucky, was very enthusiastic about the public art component and commissioned Spalding for the project.

ORLANDO Twenty of Dale Rogers’ cor-ten Big Dog sculptures are scattered around the grounds of the Mennello Museum of American Art in a temporary exhibit. The museum has cooperated with the Canine Companions for Independence to raise funds as patrons “adopt” a dog and have their name put on a ribbon around the sculptural dog’s neck.

TAMPA Tampa artist Catherine Woods’ ‘Kinetic Ring’ has been installed as a gateway sculpture designed to reflect the Westshore area’s active environment. The 24 foot tall sculpture of painted, tempered, laminated glass and coated steel and concrete was a public/private partnership commissioned by the City of Tampa Art Programs Division and the Westshore Alliance. MGA Sculpture Studio fabricated the work and collaborated with C Glass Studio on the design of the metal framework.

As artist Catherine Woods explains, ‘Westshore is an area ‘on the move’ with it’s lively collection of restaurants, shopping areas, and hotels. I wanted ‘Kinetic Ring’ to reflect that activity - to be bold and to have a sense of movement. This was achieved by creating a dynamic ‘pinwheel’ framework which holds four c-shaped panels of painted, laminated and tempered glass. The dynamic circular form appears to deconstruct and coalesce as the viewer moves by. The images on the glass panels are photographs of the Westshore area captured in motion and abstracted.

She adds, ‘Kinetic Ring’ represents a new direction in my work. Utilizing flat architectural glass panels to create dynamic three-dimensional form, the glass units function as modular building materials, as one might employ plates of metal. Utilizing durable architectural glass allows for overlapping translucency that other materials cannot achieve, imparting an intriguing, glowing lightness to the sculpture. '
