DESIGNING A CENTER FOR WHEELCHAIR USERS ADDRESSES SEVERAL CHALLENGES BOTH PHYSICAL AND SOCIAL . A BALANCING ACT BETWEEN TYPICAL ARCHITECTURE CONVENTIONS AND NEW RULES OF ACCESSIBIL ITY MUST TAKE PLACE. WHILE TRYING NOT TO OVERSIMPLIFY THE DESIGN TO MAKE “EASY” , AND AT THE SAME TIME NOT INDULGE IN SPATIAL ACROBATICS, THE PROJECT DEMANDS A DESIGN THAT CAN FIND A MARRIAGE BETWEEN THE TWO WITHOUT COMPROMISING TO EITHER.

The proposed design aims to create a social environment for initiating a holistic healing experience for wheelchair users. The design process was initiated by integrating a full size basketball

court into the given program.

Starting with the basketball court as the anchor, where the robust high energy atmosphere could echo throughout the building,

the rest of the program was organized along its perimeter. The sensitivity of certain program requirements demanded a place of

recluse, completely isolated from the high energy space.

-

As a result the program was divided into extroverted and introverted program. A dialogue is created between the two

elements. the extroverted, a sunken volume with program projecting out. the introverted , a floating volume with program carefully

arranged within. The ground plane is purposely void of program, serving purely as an access point. Breaking typical accessible

building conventions, the building challenges users to immediately engage into the dynamics of the building.

THE ILLUSION OF THE PLANTHE PLAN PROCEEDS FROM WITHIN TO WITHOUT; THE EXTERIOR IS THE RESULT OF AN INTERIOR. THE ELEMENTS OF ARCHITECTURE AND LIGHT AND SHADE, WALLS AND SPACE. ARRANGEMENT IS THE GRADATION OF AIMS, THE CLASSIFICATION OF INTENTIONS. MAN LOOKS AT THE CREATION OF ARCHITECTURE WITH HIS EYES, WHICH ARE 5 FEET 6 INCHES FROM THE GROUND. ONE CAN ONLY CONSIDER AIMS WHICH THE EYE CAN APPRECIATE AND INTENTIONS WHICH TAKE INTO ACCOUNT ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS. IF THERE COME INTO PLAY INTENTIONS WHICH DO NOT SPEAK THE LANGUAGE OF ARCHITECTURE, YOU ARRIVE AT THE ILLUSION OF PLANS, YOU TRANSGRESS THE RULES OF THE PLAN THROUGH AN ERROR IN CONCEPTION, OR THOUGH A LEANING TOWARDS EMPTY SHOW. -LE CORBUSIER LESSON OF ROME

ONE COULD EASILY ARGUE THAT JENNY HOLZER IS THE MOST EFFICIENT ARTIST OF OUR TIME. LEVERAGING THE POWER OF WORDS THROUGH THE EXTREMELY SIMPLE MEANS OF PROJECTIONS. JENNY HOLZER TRANSFORMS REGULAR OBJECTS OF ALL SCALES - FROM FURNITURE TO ROOMS, BUILDINGS AND EVEN CITYSCAPES, INTO EXTRAORDINARY VESSELS OF ART. THE WORK OF THIS AMERICAN ARTIST IS AT ONCE MINIMAL AND COMPELLING, BREATHTAKINGLY SIMPLE YET UNCOMFORTABLY PROVOCATIVE. THE AMBITION OF THE PROJECT IS TO DESIGN A CHAIR THAT EMBODIES IN THE WORK JENNY HOLZER, A CHAIR IS THAT IS EXTREMELY MINIMAL YET POTENT IN ITS ABILITY TO TRANSFORM SPACE.

This resulted in the design of a portable swing. Taking advantage of its simple pleasure and minimal construction, the materiality of the chair sought out to maximize the space transforming qualities of a swing even further. The seat was constructed to hold a patch of grass within it. The grass acts both as a statement piece continuing the concept of minimal yet potent transformation of space while also providing a comfortable cushioning for the swing itself.

The extraordinary new rate and range with which information is transferred allow curriculums to be increasingly integrated, their subjects quickly shared, exchanged and cross-referenced - a new social open-ness never before achievable. However, quality education goes beyond the mere exchange of information and presents an inevitable need for a controlled environ-ment. So the challenge is to imagine an architecture in which experimentation and flexibility are not limited, but expected. A typology that anticipates, and even pro-pels, the changing model of education.

With this in mind, we envisioned a com-position of an open plane and two closed bands. Forming a cross. The bands of classrooms divide the open spaces into quadrants of different proportions. Com-munal and informal programs such as cafeteria, playground, art studio, library, and sports hall are then placed according to their spatial needs. The elimination of the corridor, typical to most schools, en-hances the interaction between all parts, while the bands provide optional privacy and enclosure.

OMA’s design intent is to generate a dynamic urban object that engages the park and the city, generating multiple views for both the proposed building and adjacent buildings. The irregular shape of the site suggested a triangular form. Triangular forms allowed the greatest amount of freedom to generate and expand urban space within an extremely efficient shape.

With car manufacturing being one of their major industries, most Malaysians have access to affordable cars. As a result, with over 70% of the population being auto dependant, the project demanded a heavy parking capacity. The project embraces this programmatic challenge by creating a parking space that is equally dynamic as the rest of the building. With the main void of the atrium punching through each floor, offering a visual connection to the rest of the building while also acting as a kind of theatre or a center piece to the atrium.
