Harnessing Energy from Organic Wastea new frontier of industry
{Affiliation with Sustainable Cities Initiative & the City of Springfield] This project allowed me the opportunity to investigate and realize the inefficiency of energy production and consumption within the U.S. The intent of my architectural proposal was to therefore challenge and radically change the current systems and frameworks in place of nonrenewable energy sources, inefficient large-scale industries, and centralized grids. Understanding that architecture is not a static object in space but a dynamic, living process integrated into a larger network of processes continuously regenerating and transforming, I proposed a system which allows for diversity, adaptability, evolution, and transparency of process.
At the forefront of the site is the 25 Megawatt Biomass Cogeneration Facility which collects and converts wood waste from a 50 mile radius into electricity and heat for the entire site, as well as has the potential to sell power back into Springfield’s grid. Behind the facility is the iconic Saw tooth building that I repurposed for woody biomass storage, railcar repair, and office spaces above. Connecting to biomass facility by way of a multifaceted pedestrian bridge, providing movement of power, storage of woody biomass, storm water management, recreational spaces, and commercial spaces, are anchor businesses and workspaces, such as a microbrewery, high value wood and glass product manufacturing, and a culinary kitchen. These structures were designed for maximum flexibility for the users and little reliance on mechanical heating and cooling systems. In between these buildings are individual streams from the Mill Race that promote the health of the river and local ecologies.

The bridge is a multifaceted elevated walkway beginning at the northwest side of the site, intentionally cutting through the biomass facility to allow the public to see & understand the biomass cogeneration process. The bridge connects to the supporting structures, as well as to the larger network of natural trails & pathways. This structure allows multi-layered uses to occur simultaneously; recreational (at the surface), stormwater filtration (internally) slowing the rate at which the water runs off into the Mill Race River, transferring of electricity & power (internally), and drying & storing of biomass materials (below).

Brewery: The 10 barrel micro-brewery was designed for maximum flexibility for the users with little reliance on mechanical heating and cooling but rather natural & passive systems such as thermal mass water walls, cross & stack ventilation, green roofs, vertical hops along facade, and adjustable exterior shading. In between these buildings are individual streams from the Mill Race that promote the health of the river and local ecologies.

EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE
POTENTIAL INFRASTRUCTURE TOXINS ON SITE
[Affiliation with Sustainable Cities Initiative 2009] Located along the East side of the Duwamish River’s edge site, the site, as well as the river, have been manipulated and changed to benefit the needs of heavy industry & in the process destroying the ecological and social aspect of the area. I worked in a group of three to envision & transform this abused piece of land into a vibrant living green space/park in efforts to improve the surrounding communities and urbanscape. We implemented a series of phases to properly resolve the complexity of issues such as dangerous toxins in the soil & water, stormwater runoff, and restricted access.

A REVIVING HILLSIDEa dirt memorial
18
The main entry into the park begins with a “dirt memorial,” which is composed of a grid of concrete blocks containing contaminated soil. The concrete blocks act as containers for phytoremediation to occur while also symbolically representing graves for the contaminated soil. Along the way, there are informational markers where visitors can learn about the history of the site and the process of brownfield remediation. After the last concrete block, the space opens and reveals an increasingly diverse, vibrant, green space.

Providing Refuge protect & conserve
Located in Springfield, OR, along the Willamette River, the Outdoor Center aspires to revitalize the neglected site, natural ecologies, & youths in the surrounding area. This facility is a learning tool for children, as well as the local community, to explore and understand the natural environment & steps to actively protect it. The building accomplished this through green design strategies such as natural stack cooling, natural cross ventilation, grey water catchment, & bioswales for stormwater run off. The building form was inspired by the surrounding trees & tree form; reaching, connecting, & sheltering.

Allen Hall Remodel: Designed a curtain window wall & brick veener wallfor the three-story Allen Hall Journalism building on the University of Oregon campus. Enclosure provides moveable, motorized east facing shading, natural cross ventilation, and thermal mass heating & cooling. These external features create a dynamic and visually intriguing facade while providing a comfortable atmosphere and an industrial, modern aesthetic for the building’s occupants.

I have been very fortunate in my young life to have traveled to several amazing countries for personal and academic reasons, but I always seize the opportunity to explore a world other than my own. These experiences allow me to immerse myself in a different culture, enhancing my sense of humanity and reinforcing my purpose & responsibilities as an architect. Some of my International Travels include: [Italy, Study Abroad Program] Rome, Venice, Firenze, Vicenza, [Switzerland] Vals, Chur, [Netherlands] Amsterdam, [United Kingdom] London, Wiltshire, [Israel] Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, swam in the Sea of Galilee, Dead Sea, & the Mediterranean Sea, [France] Saumur, Paris, [Canada] Victoria, [Mexico] Puerto Vallarta.
