Letter from Tony Long, 2014 President

I have worked for MainSource Bank for three years. Currently the Branch Manager of our Shelbyville location, I have worked in the financial industry for ninteen years. In college, I played basketball at IUPUI and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. I have a wonderful wife, Michelle, and four children.

Starting as an Ambassador for the Chamber and having served on the Chamber board for three years, I have enjoyed participating on various committees including the Cash Bash, Golf Outing, Trade Fair, Finance, and the Executive Committees.

January 2014 is a new year and a new beginning. Many people and businesses will make a resolution. They promise to improve physically, mentally, financially, improve education, and improve relationships. I believe the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce has been a strong local organization whose goals have been to further the interests of local businesses while creating a solid business network. My goal as Chamber Board President is to keep an open mind and a willingness to change if change is needed. Zig Ziglar has a great quote “You have made some mistakes, and you may not be where you want to be, but that has nothing to do with your future.”

I welcome 2014 and also any suggestions. You can contact me via email at [email protected], or you can call me at 317-392-6602.

The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is ready to begin a new year and we look forward to our

annual events. We appreciate your membership and look forward to supporting you in 2014!

Member Insight

In case you’ve been somewhere off the grid and have somehow missed the news--old news from 2010-- Firesheep is an incredibly easy to use add-on for the Firefox web browser. When invoked while it is connected to any open and unencrypted WiFi hotspot, it lists every active web session being conducted by anyone sharing the hotspot. It allows a snooping user to hijack any other user’s online web session log-on with a simple double-click of the mouse. The snooper, is then logged on and impersonating the victim, so they can do anything the original logged on user/victim might do.

The simplest solution is hotspot encryption; period. Open hotspots can still remain free and open, but they must use WPA (Wireless Protected Access) encryption to protect their users from casual eavesdropping. WPA encryption is not difficult. The hotspot’s WPA password does not need to be secret in order for all of the hotspot’s users to be protected from casual passive eavesdropping by each other and any other outsiders. For example, Starbucks could simply adopt the password “starbucks” throughout their entire coffee shop chain and have it known to all users. Users get the benefit of knowing that their traffic is encrypted in return for the minor one time burden of entering the “starbucks” password when prompted by their computers.

Is this perfect protection? No. Robust endpoint authentication will always be missing from any public-access WiFi system. Complex, active, “man in the middle” attacks can still be mounted; however, simply switching to encrypted WPA protocol raises the attack bar much higher with near zero effort. Importantly, switching to WPA encryption can be done immediately to offer significant protection to ALL users of such encrypted hotspots, not only just those who might be targeted by Firesheep. It’s just the right thing to do, and it’s so simple.

Using a password for a public hotspot may be out of the control of casual users; therefore, other actions can be taken for safe browsing. In today’s environment, with ever increasing demands for bandwidth and more security, an additional security measure for using public WiFi has become surprisingly available, secure and affordable. Using a VPN (virtual private network) installed on a user’s own computer, can add an additional layer of protection for public or private internet connections. A fully encrypted end-to-end tunnel will basically prevent any kind of snooping and ensure total security and privacy when added to a secure internet connection (HTTPS) and strong antivirus protection.

Firesheep and Hotspot Security submitted by: David Sly, Nerds on Site

Below is a list of the top 5 VPN solutions according to a popular study on VPNs:

Although using a VPN is a small expense ($5-10 per month except for proXPN’s free option), it can be used in any public WiFi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, etc. or home internet connection to mask internet activity even from your ISP. It is cheap security and could greatly strengthen your secure internet connections. Wifi Security for public hotspots doesn’t have to be difficult, but as we become more connected, it is important to become aware of necessary precautions that keep us safe and worry-free.

Now that you have read the title of this article, your first question probably is….what is CTE?

In the good ol’ days, it was referred to as vocational or vocay in Shelby county. Fortunately, today CTE is being recognized as a valuable pathway for high school students to be trained to enter the workforce or attend a college (two year or four year college), hence the name – Career and Technical Education. For students who attend one of the high schools located in Shelby County, Blue River Career Programs (BRCP) is the career center for them. We serve only the students who are enrolled in one of the five Shelby County high schools.

CTE month is an opportunity for us to highlight our school, just as other career centers around the nation are doing. On Monday, February 3 we will have our chili supper and open house at BRCP. Parents, students, and community partners are invited to have a free meal with us and tour any or all of the programs we offer. The chili will be the winning recipe from our chili cookoff. Competitors in the cookoff are students in our Culinary Arts program. Although we work diligently to get our message out to the community, you may still not be aware of the great programs we have. So, you are invited to attend our open house, meet our instructors, and learn more about the opportunities available to our students. We will also highlight our programs through instructor written articles that will appear in the local media throughout the month of February.

We have twelve secondary instructors who teach fifteen programs. We are offering Criminal Justice and Diesel Technology for the 2014-15 school year. We have five adult basic education instructors who teach GED classes.

February is CTE Monthsubmitted by: Steve Shaw, Blue River Career Center

We also currently offer adult Certified Nursing Aid, Emergency Medical Technician, and Welding courses. The availability of these courses depend on enrollment.

Our goal at BRCP is to enable students to obtain as many industry certifications and dual college credits as they possibly can. The vast majority of our programs allow students the opportunity to achieve this goal. Of the 301 high school students enrolled in our programs, approximately 64% attend Shelbyville, 14% attend Triton, 10% attend Waldron, 6% attend Morristown, and 6% attend Southwestern.

Approximately 63% of our students have applied to the dual credit program to take advantage of

the free college credits through Ivy Tech and Vincennes University If these dual credits are achieved, parents will save approximately $149,000 in college tuition. We are a National Technical Honors Society school. Entry into the Society is based upon the

individual student’s GPA and instructor recommendation. Fifty-six students are

attempting to achieve a Technical Honors Diploma. This is equivalent to the Academic

Honors Diploma that may also be obtained in the students’ academic areas of study. Over 20 recognized technical certificates are also offered through our programs at BRCP.

These are some of the reasons we celebrate National CTE month. They are reasons that you should celebrate with us. They are what makes our schools stronger and our communities stronger. Stronger communities mean better lives for all of us. It starts with celebrating our students. We would like you to join us and celebrate CTE month at Blue River Career Programs! To contact Blue River Career Programs, call (317) 392-4191 or visit us at 801 St. Joseph Street.

Member SpotlightSeniors Helping Seniors® Opens its Doors to Serve Families Throughout Shelby, Johnson, and Southeast Marion Countiessubmitted by: Tom Krughoff, Seniors Helping Seniors

Tom and Noell Krughoff, owners of the local Seniors Helping Seniors® center, are excited to be new members of the Chamber. Seniors Helping Seniors in-home services is opening its doors to help older seniors stay self-sufficient throughout Shelby, Johnson, and southeast Marion Counties. The non-medical home care organization provides companionship, transportation, meal preparation, overnight stays and home maintenance services all by seniors who get paid for their work.

“When both of our parents began needing more help, Tom and I experienced firsthand all the different aspects that come with caring for an aging loved one,” shared Noell. “There is a lot to navigate to make sure your parents are cared for and happy.”

“Our parents wanted to stay in their homes for as long as possible, but the options were very slim,” continued Tom, Noell’s husband. “Peace of mind and even safety depend on finding someone who can be there for Mom and Dad when we couldn’t. Our goal with Seniors Helping Seniors® home care is to provide services for seniors while wholeheartedly supporting their ability to maintain quality lives.”

Tom and Noell began recruiting service providers in August of this year, and they have been gratified by the skills,

experience, and compassion demonstrated by the people who have applied for positions. “All of our providers are people we would feel comfortable leaving our own loved ones with,” remarked Tom.

In addition to family, community is a top priority for Tom and Noell. They’ve lived in Shelby County for over thirty years and also have family and friends in both Johnson and Marion Counties. After retirement, they were looking for ways to stay involved in community life. Seniors Helping Seniors is a good fit. Both Tom and Noell agree, “We think the aspect of pairing active, compassionate, knowledgeable seniors with other seniors who need assistance is a unique and effective model.”
