Weaving Sample by Edna Devai

FiguredFloatWeaveonTabbyGroundThis weave is at home all over the world and lives under a lot of different names. We usually refer to it by its

Swedish name as Opphämta or Upphämta. Originally, it was woven with a pickup s ck, half heddles and a

weaving sword. Later it was transposed to the drawloom. In any case it is a slow weave, but worth the effort

and the pickup and sword technique lends itself to weaving in pairs. One person treadling the tabbies and

throwing the shu les for tabby and pa ern, the other posi oned at the back of the loom and li ing the half

heddles and handling the sword. However, this func on can be done by the “front weaver” as well if a helper

cannot be found.

It could very well be that this weave was one of the first or very early linen warp/co on we fabrics u lizing

the co on yarn’s so ness, ease of dyeing and ability to cover the warp well where it floats over it.

The sample was woven on a white 20/2 mercerized co on warp

se at 30 epi with a half bleached 20 linen tabby we and a

hand dyed 20/2 co on pa ern we 4 strands wound together.

Shrinkage in length was ~4% and in width ~7% a er wet finish‐

ing.

For a detailed descrip on of the technique please refer to the ap‐

propriate chapters in Ulla Cyrus‐Ze erström: Manual of Swedish

Handweaving and Lillemor Johansson: Damask and Opphämta

with Weaving Sword or Drawloom.

Ply-Split Braiding in Three Dimensions

Presented by

Julie Hedges

May 7, 8, 9, 2013

Workshop: The versatility of ply-splitting makes it an ideal technique with which to explore three-dimensional forms. Work in the scale and yarn of your choice to make vessels, dishes or sculptural pieces. Julie will talk about the traditions of ply-splitting and her research in India and the develop-ment of the technique. A number of different starting methods will be introduced working with plain oblique twining (POT), Single Course Oblique Twining (SCOT), and Ply-Split Darning (PSD) tech-niques. The importance of yarn selection, color choice and the cord making process will be ex-plored. Different methods of ply-splitting will be examined in relation to making shapes and the de-velopment of designs. All of these should come together in the design and development of a fin-ished piece. Students must have some knowledge of ply-splitting to take this class. Julie Hedges is a graduate of Liverpool Art School, where she specialized in woven textile design. In 1989 she attended a workshop on Ply-Split Braiding taught by Peter Collingwood. Since then, she has been researching and developing the technique to make wearable and sculptural pieces in a variety of yarns. In 2004 she furthered her research by travelling to India and found interesting textiles and images which have influenced her work. She teaches ply-split braiding in the UK and the US. Location: Table Rock Llamas, 6520 Shoup Road, Black Forest, Colorado 80908. Cost: Estimated cost $200 or less, plus $50 for supplies; $100 deposit required with registration. Cancellation Policy: In order to host the workshop we must have a guaranteed enrollment. If you cannot attend the workshop after registering, we will try to fill your spot from a waiting list. If we do not have a waiting list, it is your responsibility to find a replacement person or to pay the entire workshop fee. Questions: Beverly Weaver at [email protected] – 719-575-9864
