PPWG President’s Notes – June newsletter Looking back at the 2012-2013 guild year I am very impressed with all the work that was done by our board and committee members to make it a truly inspiring year. We had many opportunities to learn from talented weavers and spinners and to take many workshops. Looking forward – the coming year also proves to be inspirational! I want to thank everyone involved for their hard work.
Thank you to Betsy Anderson and Ellen Alderson for agreeing to serve on the Audit Committee that will review our books this summer.
And as we go forward, thank you to all who volunteered to serve on our new smaller-sized Board due to the changes we made to our By-Laws. For those new to the board, the usual way of organiz-ing for the upcoming year is to have a board meeting sometime late in the summer. I'm looking at setting it up during the first two weeks of August, and in July will email out several possible meeting dates to find the best day for most of the Board. All current members are welcome to attend any PPWG board meeting. If you want to attend a summer board meeting and are not a board member, please contact me for information about time and place.
Have a creative and enjoyable summer and I hope to see many of you at the “Woven Together: Fire-storm” art exhibit opening at the Business of Art Center, 513 Manitou Avenue in Manitou Springs, on June 21st from 6:00 – 8:30 pm.
ProgramNotesEdna Devai
The program year ended with a flourish at our May mee ng. Julie Hedges presenta on on ply split braiding,
its origins and worldwide ar s c applica on was fascina ng, and a good me was had by all at the annual
luncheon. A big thank you to Beverly Weaver and Sally Kuhn for organizing the ply split workshops and
bringing Julie to the Guild!
Programs this past guild year u lized guild talent, na onal and interna onal ar sts as well as local resources
to bring an exci ng mix of speakers to our membership. Leslie Parker and I were busy pu ng together the
program calendar for this coming year. As life happens to everybody, there are s ll couple of loose ends to
e to complete the calendar for 2013‐14. We hope it will be as enjoyable to the membership as this past year
had been.
In September, the More than Four Study Group will present their Crackle project and in October Anita Luvera
Mayer will be the speaker with members of the Handweavers Guild of Pueblo as our guests.
With Sarah Richards on board as Second Vice President, we already started to work on the 2014‐15 pro‐
grams. Working on programs a year+ out makes the job of the VP team easier and helps secure speakers
more easily as they are scheduling their commitments at least that far out.
Hope we are going to have an easy summer with lots of weaving, spinning and dyeing projects finished in
me for the September Show and Tell.
See you all at the Firestorm opening June 21st!

Maryse Levenson’s Weaving Sample Technique: Bateman’s Weave
Warp: Purple 10/2 Tencel and Teal 10/2 cotton
Weft: Lavender 20/2 cotton and Chamois 5/2 rayon
Reed: 15 DPI SETT: 30 EPI 2 ends per dent
Finishing Details: Hand washed in hot water; line dried; steam pressed
Comments: I fell in love with this draft; even more so after Susan Bowman give me a CD with this very draft on it! Nevertheless, I slightly changed the draft as I wanted to see what the Teal block would looked like if I extended it from shaft 8 to 1 instead of 8 to 3 as written. I like both. I also used only one size thread in the warp and only one color in the purple block. Dr. Bateman use 7 closely related col-ors and 3 different sizes threads also sett at 30 epi. It gives the cloth a very rich look.
I put on the loom a warp long enough for the sam-ples and to make 2 scarves. I was a bit concerned about the 9 threads float on the reverse side but at 30 epi it is not much of a problem. I wove one scarf as the sample but for the second, I played with the treadling and did something different. A fun and successful project I think.

PPWG Major Workshop News from Sally Kuhn and Beverly Weaver Ply‐Split Braiding Workshops with Julie Hedges
Julie Hedges arrived on Monday a ernoon, May 6 and spent Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday working with eleven hardy souls doing 3‐dimensional ply‐split braiding. Most of us made pentagonal bases and built baskets with five sides using POT and/or SCOT with co on cords in amazing colors. We went on to explore other possibili es with ply‐spli ng in three dimensions and experimented with making our own cords in various combina ons of colors. At the regular PPWG mee ng on Friday, Julie presented a history of ply‐split braiding and showed
her own contemporary work as well as pieces by other ar sts. On Satur‐day and Sunday, thirteen lucky folks learned more about two‐dimensional ply‐spli ng, including techniques to be used for jewelry, clothing fasten‐ers or other decora ve and useful objects. In addi on to POT and SCOT, we did some ply‐split darning and made more cords. We all enjoyed the workshops and are looking forward to seeing finished products from the par cipants in the near future.

Complexity 2014: Complex Weavers announces its biennial interna onal juried exhibit featuring works em‐
ploying complex weave structures interlacing threads and fibers in ways beyond plain weave. Complex weav‐
ing is defined by the cloth produced and the mind it took to create it, not by the equipment used. There is no
requirement that the work must be woven on a minimum number of sha s or on a Jacquard loom. Works
with historic inspira on and interpreta ons are welcome.
All Complex Weavers members and students at accredited colleges and universi es may submit entries. Non
‐member ar sts may join Complex Weavers (www.complex‐weavers.org ) by the submission date. Students
must provide proof of full‐ me current registra on. Work will be evaluated by three jurors: Marguerite
Gingras, Alice Schlein and Wendy Weiss
Robert Hillestad Tex les Gallery, University of Nebraska‐Lincoln. Entry deadline Nov 18, 2013. Exhibit runs April 7 ‐ May 9, 2014. Prospectus: h p://www.complex‐weavers.org Ques ons: Sandra Hu on (719) 488‐3716, [email protected]

May Raffle Results
The May Raffle brought in $163 for the library. That is a little over one-half the budgeted yearly in-come for the library.
Each year, the May Raffle builds excitement and fun for PPWG members. Many thanks to mem-bers who donated items ranging from a sheepskin to woven items to weatherized carry bag featuring beautiful cones of yarn. Also, thanks goes to all of you who purchased $163 in tickets. The librarian will be binding issues of magazines and purchasing new items for our wonderful library. Be sure you take advantage of this unusual resource. PPWG members are most fortunate to have this bonanza of information available. Let these resources inspire and guide you as you develop weaving skills and knowledge.

Sample Schedule
We need volunteers for weaving, dyeing, and spinning samples for the newsletter. Hopefully we will always have a
weaving, spinning, and dyeing sample for each newsletter. As you can see there are still some holes left in the sign
up sheet. If we don't have volunteers, then we won't have samples that month. If you would like to volunteer,
please let sample chairperson know.
For weaving, we need two (2) samples (6” x 6” minimum, 8” x 10.5” maximum). For spinning we need two (2)
samples which need to be butterflies approximately 4 yards long. The two (2) dyeing samples may be on fiber or
handwoven cloth. So the size of the sample will depend on the media.
The newsletter editor needs digital photos of the sample for the newsletter. Please save the photos in .jpg format
and e-mail them to [email protected] . If you do not want to take the digital photos yourself, please
give or send the samples to the newsletter editor to take the photos. Please contact the newsletter editor to make
arrangements for the photos.
Your weaving, spinning, and dyeing descriptions need to be given, mailed, or emailed to the newsletter editor, at
([email protected]). The sample chairperson will print the descriptions from the newsletter for the
sample notebooks in the library. If you have other information for the sample notebooks, please give it to the
sample chairperson at a meeting.
