PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I am finished with my decorating the kitchen with my baskets. Many are useful and some are decoration. But, they all make me happy to see them on display. One tip that I learned from my son was to always mix a basket with other mediums like pottery, tins, shells, etc. to create a pleasing arrangement. I hope to see or hear some of your ideas for decorating with baskets in the coming months. Please consider providing a picture or a tip for our newsletter.

My summer is coming to an end and I will start teaching

school again next week. My free time will be limited and I will miss crafting and weaving the most. In my math classes, I always like to show students application for our work. I especially like bringing basket weaving into the classroom when I teach geometry. We look at round baskets that have handles. Students calculate the circumference of baskets with certain lengths of handles. It is a good way to answer the student question, “When will I ever use this?”

The Weaving Odyssey is coming soon and I’m sure all

participants are getting excited! I hope everyone has safe travels and successful basket weaving! I will see you there unless my first grandchild decides to come that weekend!

Happy weaving! Marilyn

2016 A WEAVING ODYSSEY WEAVING DREAMS

Counting down the days until our Weaving Odyssey! Thank you to the committee for their many hours/days of hard work! Thank you in advance to volunteers who will be helping with the raffle, hospitality room and basket exchange! A few reminders:

Check if you need any special tools for your classes (website still has the class descriptions). Remember your towels, water bucket, apron, etc.

Bring your breakfast food—remember we have refrigerators and microwaves in our rooms! Contributions to the hospitality room are always welcome! Thank you for donating a treat to share! Bring name labels for the raffle tickets, if you wish. Bring a checkbook to renew your dues for 2017, and for marketplace! Classes on Thursday begin at 6:00!

OCTOBER GUILD WEAVE Reminders

If you have signed up for October’s weave with Annetta Kraayeveld, here are a few reminders. The Friday, October 7, class will be held at the Camp Hill Giant grocery store community room. Class starts at 9:00 but I recommend that you come a bit early if possible to set up and be ready to go. Our lunch time is part of our weaving time as we can be in the room only until 5:00. Giant grocery store has a very nice food court, including salads, subs, panini, soups, etc. There are several restaurants in the shopping center: Panera Bread, Arby’s and a Subway. A Chipotle Mexican grill is across the street. You may also want to bring a lunch. The Saturday October 8 class will be held in East Berlin’s community center starting at 9:00. Again, I recommend you arrive and be ready to start at 9:00 as our weaving time includes the lunch hour. There are several sub and pizza shops in the area, or you may bring your lunch. Directions to each of these venues are on the last page of this newsletter.

NOVEMBER GUILD WEAVE Saturday, November 5, 2016, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Gravel Hill United Methodist Church, Palmyra, PA

BLACK ASH STRAWBERRY or POPCORN BASKET Size approximately 4” h x 3” w base, and 4-5” w lid

Advanced Weavers

Examples of Strawberry and Popcorn Baskets

Central Pennsylvania Basketry Guild member Pamela Wilson will lead this workshop. Participants will have a choice of making either a red strawberry basket or a natural popcorn basket in the style of Native American type black ash baskets of the Northeast. Lids may be done two ways, either over the rim or fitting into the rim. The basket is done in black ash and sweetgrass. All weaving materials are included in the price. This is not done on a mold. Participants should feel competent about shaping their basket. Participants need to bring: basket scissors, micro nippers (those with the blade on an angle work best), small Tupperware type container for water, small packing tool or awl, needle nose pliers, & mini copper clips or tiny clothespins (no alligator clips!) Depending on how fast you weave, you may or may not be able to complete this in one day, but most participants should be able to complete the basic basket and lid and do the curls at home.

Sign-up Sheet for Pamela Wilson’s Class Checks must be received by Monday October 3, 2016, to hold your place and give instructor time to order supplies and make up kits. Make your checks payable to: Pamela Wilson. Mail to: 506 Openaki Road, Denville, NJ 07834 _____Red Strawberry basket $75 _____Natural Popcorn Basket $75 Name_______________________________________________ Email___________________________ Phone___________________________

Guild Fun

June Dye party/picnic Guild members Dianne Pearce, Barbara Vicente and Jan Montgomery brave the iffy weather forecast to dye lots of reed! By the way, the bad weather stayed away until after the picnic!

Busy weavers at August’s Wall Basket class, wonderfully taught by Sharon Schaeffer.

DECORATING YOUR BASKETS WITH YOUR SEASHORE FINDS

I have piles of shells from collecting over the years, stored filled to the brim in glass containers. Here are some of the ways I have learned to incorporate shells into basket weaving. Please share any ideas you may have!

Glue a piece of waxed linen on the back of the shells with E6000 glue. Let dry overnight. Use the waxed linen to tie the shells to the basket.

Use a dremel to carefully drill holes in shell – use as a base for coiling with pine needles

or other naturals. (Thanks to Jean Koon for this idea—using oyster shells at our guild

retreat.)

Some shells even come with tiny holes already – use a strand of waxed linen and

combine with beads for a beachy tie on.

Small pieces of drift wood make nice handles for small baskets. You can drill holes to

make a rib basket, or tie on/weave onto basket with cane or waxed linen.
