March 11, 2017: Diane Braun will be teaching “2-Handed, 2-Color Fair Isle Knitting.” Are you avoiding glorious Fair Isle knitting because untangling the two colors of yarn frustrates you? March 15-17, 2017: Jill Holbrook “Spinning to Knit and Knitting with Handspun.” Learn to spin the yarn you want and use it for the knitted project of your choice. Submitted by Members THE THREADS OF OUR LIVES by Barb Kiger After concentrating on the November show details, I was all out of words and ideas for an article this month. But yesterday, a conversation with my 97-year-old mother started me thinking about the connections we make with family and friends through our love of working with fibers. In our conversation mom was very animated and excited about receiving a box of old silk and cotton threads from a friend. They sat and talked for over an hour about their memories of grandmothers and mothers and how they used these threads. These threads had very old labels and the small box showed signs of being treasured over the years. Mom was honored that this woman had given her these treasures and she sees possibilities in using them in her stitchery. She also said that what is left will then be passed on to me. I know we all have little treasures like these. I have my mom’s weaving yarns, my mother-in-law’s crochet cotton, and many yarns from friends that I have gotten at our silent auction. In fact, I label them with the name of the previous owner. I remember these friends fondly as I use their yarns in my projects. For example, my pink jacket has lots of yarn from Barb Gray. She is with me when I wear it. I also have bits of a crazy quilt of silks and velvets from my grandmother’s mother who was a milliner. As a child I remember that on special days I was allowed to play with the buttons in the huge old wooden box choke full of mother-of-pearl and celluloid buttons from old clothes of years past. I refer to these treasures and use the buttons on current projects. These treasures extend to equipment too. In the YC classroom I remember that Verla named all the donated looms by the first names of their previous owners, to remember and honor them. On holidays, before my daughters had babies, we always would raid my stash and try some new technique in knitting and crochet, three generations – grandmothers, mother and daughters, sharing and learning from each other. When we first moved to Prescott in 1979, I immediately knew I had found “my people” when I met the members of the Mountain Spinners and Weavers Guild, which was two years old. Michelle Veatch and I are probably the only two active guild members from that time. To this day I still treasure my fiber friends made through this guild. I love learning and working together in workshops and at events. You have taught me so much. This past year the guild has grown and many of you have jumped it to volunteer on all levels. Welcome to all you, new and returning members. Thank you for joining us in passing along our traditional fiber crafts, and sharing the threads of our lives. October meeting presentation Submitted by Nancy Wilson Since we all hate to miss a meeting, here’s some pictures from Anne Marie Bellam’s presentation on weaving damask on a Jacquard loom (in Holland, no less!). I’m not a weaver (Don’t worry; I have plans.) and found it fascinating. I can’t even imagine how long the warping process takes. Anne Marie took us through the process us creating the design, weaving the design, and finishing the fabric. Thanks for sharing your experience with us, Anne-Marie!

What forms of fiber art do you do? Spinning, Knitting, and Crocheting (Cross stitch, but it's been a while)

How did you get interested in fiber arts? As a small child with embroidery

In a perfect world, what would a day of fiber art look like? Weaving, knitting and spinning . . . with no interruptions

Describe a recent project that you completed. Working on Turned Taquete and knitting a vest

If you were to add one more type of fiber art to your repertoire, what would it be? Upon thinking about it, I would say I would like to learn to dye and would also like to learn how to properly plan and utilize my spinning in weaving, knitting and crocheting.

What do you like best about the Mountain Spinners and Weavers Guild? The people!

Please share a tip with the members. Love what you do!

In addition to having great classes and being fun, this year Ken Zoll, director of the Verde Valley Archeology Center and Museum in Camp Verde, will be giving a talk on ancient textiles in this area. This will be an exciting new dimension to our fiber arts studies by learning about what people were doing with fibers here thousands of years ago.
