WHAT HAPPENED ON THE CROSS?
How could the life, let alone the death,
of one man two thousand years ago be
the salvation of the human race? The
biblical explanation is the atonement: the
crucified one was the Son of God, acting
and suffering in cooperation with Godthe Father and God the Holy Spirit.
The crucifixion of Jesus Christ has uni-
versal, inclusive and cosmic significance,
because in him the Creator acts and suf-
fers. There is also a special relationship
between Christ and humanity—he is
“with” us, and he is “for” us, bearing the
penalty for our sin.
Donald Macleod considers seven key
words Christians have used to describe
what happened on the cross: substitution ,
expiation, propitiation, reconciliation , satisfaction ,
redemption and victory.

AN EXCERPT
But what can we say as to the precise
nature of the Father’s action at Calvary?
The New Testament answer is breath-
taking. He acted in the role of priest. Just
as Jesus ‘gave’ his life a ransom for many
(Mark 10:45) so God the Father ‘gave’ his
one and only Son; just as Christ ‘delivered
up’ himself as a fragrant offering (Eph.
5:2) so God the Father ‘delivered up’ his
own Son (Rom. 8:32). Clearly, then, cor-
responding to the priesthood of the self-giving Son there is a priesthood of God the
Father. From this point of view, Golgotha
becomes his temple, where, far from abus-
ing a child or sadistically inf licting cruelty,
he is engaged in the most solemn business
that earth can witness. He is offering a sac-
rifice. The cross is his altar, and his own
Son the sacrifice.
PRAISE FOR CHRIST CRUCIFIED
“Donald Macleod’s work is always stimulating,
sometimes provocative and never less than excellent.
This is a contribution to thought on the atonement
that is both timely and incisive. It should be
required reading for students, theologians, ministersand anyone interested in learning more about the
stupendous atoning work of Christ.”
—Robert Letham, Wales Evangelical School ofTheology, author of The Work of Christ
“Those who have heard Donald Macleod preach
or who have read his writings will know that thecrucified Christ is, of all theological topics, his forte.
He has dazzling insight matched by a way with
words which together serve to bring out aspects of
the person and work of Christ with memorable
beauty. Thus it is a pleasure to be able to commend
this book. If you are familiar with Donald’s work,
you know what to expect and know that you willbe challenged and edified. If you have never read
him before, you are in for a treat.”
—Carl R. Trueman, Westminster TheologicalSeminary

Conflict happens. It’s a painful reality
of life in a fallen world. But we don’t
need to be content with broken rela-
tionships—conflict resolution is pos-
sible. God’s intention for us and for theworld is for all to live in peace with one
another, and Christian peacemakers have
an unparal leled opportunity to be true
ambassadors of reconciliation.
With the life of Jesus as the prime exam-
ple, Rick Love equips and empowers
peacemakers of all stripes to integrate
evangelical witness with commitment
to reconciliation. Masterfully blending
Scripture and personal experience, Love
shows how we can walk in the footsteps
of Jesus as catalysts of peace, bringingtransformation and hope to a world cry-
ing out for healing and forgiveness.

Q & A WITH RICK LOVE
WHAT EXACTLY IS PEACEMAKING?
If I had to choose only one verse in the whole
Bible to summarize biblical peacemaking it
would be Romans 12:18, “If it is possible, as
far as it depends on you, live at peace witheveryone.” It is both concise and comprehen-
sive—a virtual “peacemaking for dummies.”
WHY DID YOU WRITE PEACE CATALYSTS ?
There are many books focused on either
interpersonal peacemaking (one end of
the peacemaking spectrum) or on prevent-
ing war through nonviolent resistance (the
other end of the peacemaking spectrum).
There is little literature that f its in between
that gap. Peace Catalysts does just that.
WHAT WILL READERS FIND IN YOUR BOOK?
I describe the relationship between peace-
making and evangelism, highlighting God’s
comprehensive peace purposes and provid-
ing an integrated approach to peacemaking
and witness. I also put a strong emphasis
on right motives. We do peacemaking not
as an evangelistic strategy but as a God-glorifying good deed.
PRAISE FOR PEACE CATALYSTS
“For years I read about ‘the God of peace’ and
‘the peace of God.’ . . . Then I started visiting
war zones: first Bosnia, later the Democratic
Republic of Congo, now the Holy Land. Peace
is no longer a pretty notion somehow associated
with divine beings. . . . This book provides
practical guides for helping to create personal
peace, interpersonal peace, social peace and
peace as an alternative to war. In my life and
ministry, I need this book!”
—Lynne Hybels, advocate for global engage-ment, Willow Creek Community Church
“As pastor of a large church and as a leader
who oversees other churches, I found Rick Love’s
material on conflict resolution to be the most
practical, irenic and help ful material I have ever
read on this subject. . . . I love this book and
pray that it would get into the hands of every
Christian leader.”
—Rich Nathan, senior pastor, VineyardColumbus, and author of Empowered Evangelicals
“I couldn’t put this book down. It’s brilliant and
simple at the same time. . . . Whether you have a
conflict in your family or you’re working globally
dealing with conflicts, this book is a must-read.”
—Bob Roberts Jr., senior pastor, NorthWoodChurch, and author of Bold as Love
