JESUS FROM EVERY PERSPECTIVE

Who is your Jesus? What if he is just a composite of

your favorite selections from the New Testament buffet,

garnished with some Hollywood and Americana?

Rediscovering Jesus  takes us on a gallery tour of

biblical portraits of Jesus, from Matthew through

Revelation. We visit other houses of worship and

their scriptures, examining the Jesus of the Book

of Mormon and the Qur’an. We browse the latest

works on the Gnostic and the historical Jesus, then

we’re off on a walking tour of Jesus in American

media and culture. Along the way our tour guidesraise questions: If this were our only portrait of

Jesus, what would our faith be like?

From the authors of Rediscovering Paul , this enjoyable

yet challenging look at how we encounter Jesus in

Scripture and our culture guides us toward seeing

Jesus truly. With sidebars exploring the “so what?”questions, it probes how our understanding of Jesus

can make a difference for faith and life.

REDISCOVERING PAULDavid B. Capes, Rodney

Reeves and E. Randolph

Richards  350 pages, paperback,3941, $25.00CLUB PRICE: $17.50

“Making Jesus in our own image—a dangerous tempta-

tion. Capes, Reeves and Richards provide the antidote in this

well-written and witty book that tackles two key questions:

Who is the Jesus of the Bible, and how does he differ from

claims made about him in other religions? Using down-

to-earth examples and stories from around the globe, the

authors help readers better understand Jesus’ life and teach-

ings, and why this matters for our faith today.”

 —Lynn Cohick, Wheaton College

“Professors Capes, Reeves and Richards are to be com-

mended for their creative, interesting and intellectually

honest look at the many faces of Jesus. Those interested

in encountering Jesus in fresh and stimulating ways

need to pay attention to this book!”

 —Christopher W. Skinner, University of

Mount Olive

“My favorite part of each chapter is the section entitled,

‘What if this were our only Jesus?’—not because

these sections point to deficiencies in that viewpoint,

but because they reveal my own biases and the under-

appreciated aspects of Jesus and his mission. Capes,

Reeves and Richards have produced a remarkably fresh,

enlightening and convicting volume.”

—Mark L. Strauss, Bethel Seminary, San Diego

“A truly recommended read for all people who want to

grasp what the excitement over Jesus is all about.”

—Michael F. Bird, Ridley College, Melbourne,

Australia

PRAISE FOR REDISCOVERING JESUS

“The more Jesus we present the more gospel we present. Rediscovering Jesus is onthat list of what I can enthusiastically recommend that is pure gospel! In this book

you will encounter one description after another that is shaped by and focused

on Jesus himself. What a gift this book is to the church and school!”

— Scot McKnight, Northern Seminary

MAPPING HOLY GROUND

When Soong-Chan Rah planted an urban

church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, his first

full sermon series was a six-week exposition

of the book of Lamentations. Preaching on an

obscure, depressing Old Testament book wasprobably not the most seeker-sensitive way to

launch a church. But it shaped their community

with a radically countercultural perspective.

The American church avoids lament, but lament

is an essential component of Christian faith—

recognizing struggles, challenging the statusquo and crying out for justice. This exposition

of the book of Lamentations provides a biblical

and theological lens for examining the church’s

relationship with a suffering world. It critiques

our success-centered triumphalism and calls us

to repent, opening up new ways to encounter the

other. Hear the prophet’s lament as the necessary

corrective for Christianity’s future.

PRAISE FOR PROPHETIC LAMENT

“To say that I loved Prophetic Lament by Dr. Rah

would be somewhat misleading. I didn’t love the book,

but I confess, I needed this book and believe this to be

an important resource for the wider church.”

—Eugene Cho, senior pastor, Quest Church

“Dr. Rah’s Prophetic Lament is a much-needed

addition to the ministry of reconciliation, a refreshing

take on the book of Lamentations and the timely call for

lament in the American church.”

 —Christena Cleveland, Duke Divinity School,

author of Disunity in Christ

“Soong-Chan Rah’s transparent, prophetic and practical

voice comes through in powerful and deeply insightful

ways on the pages. In a time when too many churches

are held captive to a feel-good and happy-rich gospel, this

book shows us a more authentic biblical narrative.”

—Efrem Smith, president and CEO of World Impact

“Soong-Chan Rah masterfully explains the meaning of

Lamentations in the context in which it was written, then

seamlessly applies the lessons of these Scriptures to our

contemporary setting, raising a powerful and prophetic

challenge to the American church. . . . Prophetic

Lament is more evidence of Soong-Chan Rah becoming

one of the most important theologians of our time.”

 —Jim Wallis, president of Sojourners,

author of The UnCommon Good

FROM THE INTRODUCTION

To only have a theology of celebration at the

cost of the theology of suffering is incomplete.

The intersection of the two threads provides

the opportunity to engage in the fullness of the

gospel message. Lament and praise must go

hand in hand. . . .

Despite its age, Lamentations offers us a

prophetic critique of what passes for gospel

witness in our time. This critique offers

fresh insight into our ecclesiology, or more

precisely, how the North American Christian

community should respond to a broken world.

The major themes—the importance of lament,

the necessity of engaging with suffering, the

power of encountering the other—should

lead us to a theology of lament that corrects

the triumphalism of Christianity in the West.

Lamentations may serve as the propheticcorrective necessary to embrace the next phase of

Christianity.
