EVERY CHRISTIAN’S CALL TO FOLLOW

The most urgent call upon

God’s people is to live as

followers of Jesus.

The most indicting critique against thechurch is as simple: its failure to do so.

We long to renew our hope for a world

broken and hurting. And it is we, God’s

people living in the power of the Holy

Spirit, who are called to become this hope.

Here is the crisis: we are made and

redeemed for this calling, but it slides

through our fingers. Here is the promise:

to live as followers of Jesus whenever

and wherever we are is our vocation, our

calling. Today.176 pages, hardcover, 3683, $16.00

FROM THE PREFACE

The kingdom of God is always intimate but

never small. This is what drew and draws

people to Jesus. It all turns, however, on our

response to Jesus’ two words: “Follow me.”

This is the primary call of God that createsand defines the church. We bear authentic

witness to God’s love when we demonstrate

Jesus-following lives. But too often, we

don’t. The gift we are meant to be is neither

available nor received. Meanwhile the world

needs a church that actually lives its call.

Urgently. . . .

We will not resolve the crisis by personal

renewal alone, by asking, “What is God’s

call on my life?”. . . We can, however,

recenter our lives on Jesus Christ, whose

call is to “live differently.” Whatever our

context, our work, our relationships—thatis the primary thing we are to be about

every day: following Jesus.

PRAISE FOR CALLED

“When I read Mark Labberton’s writing I can

almost hear Jesus say, ‘Well, there it is. That’s what I

was literally dying to tell you.’ This book is a call to

free the church from its distractions in order to return

to the most profound and basic question—what does

it mean to follow Jesus?”

—M. Craig Barnes, president, Princeton Seminary

“Too often we settle for a ‘calling’ that is really just

sanctified individualism, paddling in the shallows

of the self. This book pursues the deeper questions of

flourishing, sacrifice, community and transformationthat are the heart of the Christian life.”

—Andy Crouch, executive editor, Christianity Today

“Mark Labberton identifies key principles and prac-

tices for the Christ-follower to not simply exist but

to flourish. . . . If all one did was incorporate the end

of chapter practices into their daily routine, the impactdividend would be earth transforming.”

—Steve Haas, vice president, World Vision US

4 I V P B O O K C L U B . C O M

John, the longest-surviving of the apostles,

recorded in his Gospel a portrait of Jesus

that displays the depth of years of reflec-

tion on who Jesus is and what he means to

the world. He is the incarnate Word, thedivine Logos, the embodiment of all truth

and wisdom.

In this last volume of the Biblical

Imagination Series, Michael Card shows

how John stands alongside the other

Gospel writers to fill out the picture of

Jesus’ divine identity, with stories and say-

ings of Jesus not recorded by the others.

This Jesus reorients our understanding of

ourselves and the world around us, offer-

ing us nothing less than the way, the truth

and the life.

PRAISE FOR THE SERIES

“These volumes help us discover the biblical text

for ourselves, ask our own questions and discover

deeper truths. Taking seriously the individual life

of each Gospel writer, the Biblical Imagination

Series reintegrates our minds with our hearts to

recapture our imagination with the beauty and power of Christ. . . . Heartily recommended!”

 —Bible Review Journal, Spring 2014

“Michael Card has captured our imaginations

with his books centering on the four Gospels. . . .

Providing the backstory, historical, and emotional

context, he connects and weaves together the ‘Story’ from the two testaments and places us squarely

in the middle of the action—a distillation that

reads like a Bible and a film script. Dull hearts

feel, blind eyes see, and disengaged minds connect

to passages heard or read many times—and to the

 person of Jesus.”
