STEv:n C. ROY
What does God think of us when
we fail? Steven Roy argues that
Scripture holds a view of success
and failure that seriously challenges
our normal reactions to personal
failure. In fact, in the Bible we find
a promise of renewal that goes
beyond what we can ask or imagine.WHA.T GOD TH [NKS

FROM THE PREFACE
'This book is a very personal one.
It arose out of significant struggles
with issues of success and failure
in my prior ministry as a pastor. My experiences as a pastor and a
professor have shown me that these
issues are not Ul1lgue to me or to
those in vocational ministry. To one
extent or another, everyone of us
has to face failure. So how shou ld
we gauge success and failure in ourIives? What constitutes success?
Who sets the standards and who
evaluates how well or how poorly
we have met them? And what do we
do when we faa?
"Note that I said 'when we fail.' Not
'i f we fail.' The issue is not whether
we will fail but how we will cope
when we fail. Hence the title of this
book: W hat G od Thinks W I)en W e
F a i l . .. .
"My goal throughout this book is
to explore how the vast resources
of the Christian faIth can enable
us to cope wisely and well with
experiences of failure. This book is
intended to be an encouragement
not only to my fellow Christ fol-
lowers. It is also an invitation ofhope to those who might be con-
sidering a relationship with Jesus
Chnst. To all, Invite you into
the adventure of following Christ.
His grace and truth will make all
tbe difference when you experience
failure."

FROM THE PREFACE
"You may ask, 'There's so much out
nowadays with the ambiguous label
missionai , so why even use the term)'
In spite of its changmg nuances,
we continue to employ missionai in
the same way many contmue to
employ terms like evangelical or l iberal.
Miss ional has both ong01l1g context
and ongoing currency, and this
book is an attempt to ennch its
meaning and apphcation.
"The theologIcal and practical
connections between spiritual-
it y and mission with God will
continue to be developed, because
spiriruality and mission are insepa-
rable. Like the strands in DNA,
they are a twinned pair. The
Great Commandment and Great
Commission are also twinned.
When Jesus said, 'M y food ... is to
do the will of him who sent me and
to finish his work' (John 4:34), he
made a direct connection between
his spiritual life in the Father and
his m1SSIonfo r the Father. ...
"The theological substance and
structure for what we cal lmissional
spirituality is rooted in Mark 12:28-34. Journey with us as we explore
together what it means to love the
Lord our God from all our heart,
soul, mind and strength, and our
neighbor as ourselves."
