RETHINK MINISTRY SUCCESS

What do we dowhen we’ve failed? Most of us have sensed failure in one

form or another—disillusionment,

inadequacy, declining budgets, poor

decisions, opposition, depression, burn-

out. Many pastors are deeply broken

and wounded by failure.

J.R. Briggs, founder of the Epic Fail

Pastors Conference, knows what failure

feels like. With candid vulnerability,

Briggs explores the landscape of failure,

how it devastates us and how it trans-

forms us. He challenges our cultura l

expectations of success and gives us per-

mission to grieve our losses. Somehow,

in the midst of our pain, we are better

positioned to receive the grace of heal-

ing and restoration.

FROM THE FOREWORD

BY EUGENE PETERSON

If there is one piece of counsel for pastors

that towers over all else in this book it is

this: Failure is not the last word in a pastor’s

life. But you can’t deal with it by yourself. The pastoral vocation is fraught with dan-

ger. The kingdom of God is under constant

attack. Anyone in the thick of the action

(which the pastor certainly is) needs a dis-

cerning friend. You can’t do this by yourself.

The precipitating event that resulted in thewriting of this book was an unexpected and

devastating failure. In the process of pick-

ing up the pieces of his failure, J.R. Briggs,

a young pastor with promising credentials,

became aware of just how widespread pas-

toral failures are in North America. . . . In

the process of surveying the wreckage, lick-

ing his own wounds and listening to pas-

tors tell their stories, he realized that the

work of being a pastor is, by its very nature,

fertile ground for the weeds of failure. But

there is also a corollary: failure can serve as

compost for enriching the pastoral vocation

so that it brings forth thirtyfold and maybe

even a hundredfold.

PRAISE FOR FAIL

“This book is CPR. . . . Briggs reminds us that

half of resurrection is death. And that, to truly live,

we must fail.”

—A. J. Swoboda, pastor and author of Messy

“Beyond platitudes or Twitter-quote pep talks,

J.R. of fers peace, real encouragement and a better

definition of success for Christian ministry. . . .

Failures large and small, visible and invisible, will

stand up and shout for J.R.’s wisdom, wit and

honesty.”

—Paul Pastor, associate editor of ChristianityToday’s Leadership Journal and PARSE

“J.R. Briggs goes beyond giving us a robust theology

of failure; he opens his veins and shares his life. . . .

He gives us grace-filled opportunities to be our true

selves. If you are a pastor, you need this book!”

—JR Woodward, national director of church

planting for V3, author of Creating a Missional Culture

“Here is a theology of failure to go with Jesus’

sacrament of failure (‘shake the dust off your feet

and move on’). Find out why the best fail the most.”

—Leonard Sweet, bestselling author; professor,Drew University, George Fox University

MAPPING HOLY GROUND

Paul Sparks, Tim Soerens and Dwight J.

Friesen have seen—in cities, suburbs and

small towns all over North America—how

powerful the gospel can be when it takes

root in the context of a place, at the inter-section of geography, demography, econo-

my and culture.

This is not a new idea—the concept of a

parish is as old as Paul’s letters to the vari-

ous communities of the ancient church.

But in an age of dislocation and disengage-ment, the notion of a church that knows

its place and gives itself to where it finds

itself is like a breath of fresh air, like a sign

of new life.208 pages, paperback, 4115, $17.00

PUTTING THE CHURCH IN ITS PLACE

AN EXCERPT

“When . . . faith communities begin connecting together, in and for the neighborhood, they

learn to depend on God for strength to love, forgive and show grace like never before. . . .

The gospel becomes so much more tangible and compelling when the local church is actually

a part of the community, connected to the struggles of the people and even the land itself.”

PRAISE FOR THE NEW PARISH

“This important book calls us to slow down, become

rooted, and experience a taste of the abundance and

healing that God intends for all creation. Church

leaders take heed, the new parish is, without question,

the church of the future!”

—C. Christopher Smith, coauthor ofSlow Church

“We finally have a group of friends telling their

stories and giving us something radical to consider:

behaving as Jesus would in our neighborhoods.”

 —Hugh Halter, author of Flesh

“In a world of increasing mobility, fragmenting

relationships and a loss of any real sense of

covenant, we need learn again to attend to the

various people and places where God has located us.

This book is a much-needed antidote to the endemic

alienation of our time.”

 —Alan Hirsch, author, activist, dreamer

“ The New Parish is one of the most important

books on the church, Christian identity and mission

that I’ve read in a decade.”
