Kansas City Send-Off Party! It was a great night at the Kansas City Send Off Party June 28th. Many of the friends and family members of the Heralds attended the evening’s affairs and so did many from the Heart of Florida chorus!
After a bit of warm up the Heralds invited the Heart of Florida chorus to join them on the risers for a bit of song. Then the Heart of Florida chorus entertained the Heralds and their guests to a few of their own tunes. Special guest performances by Lady Bug, Special Arrangement, and Live Out Loud also dazzled the group.
After the singing everyone headed to the dining hall where the “Angels” had set up a buffet feast. ... and there was even a little more singing!
Heralds of Harmony struttin’ along and swinging their canes. (lyrics in the song they were singing).
The Heart of Florida chorus joins the Heralds of Harmony for an evening.

Kansas City favorites
• The organization and ease with which everything flowed - a credit to the Convention Team • the venue was superb the congeniality of every-one made the Convention shine!
• of course, hearing the Suntones, Rural Route 4, Max Q,and the rest of the AIC performers -• Gary Lewis and the AIC chorus• visiting the Muelhbach Hotel and seeing the “roots” of barbershopping!• getting together with friends - old and new• the Golden ox dinner - best steak ever!—Tom and Judy Williams
My favorite part? Directing the Heralds! —Steve Jamison
The sense of camaraderie amongst all of the chorus that it brings! —Steve Cragg
I am honored to have shared the stage with the Heralds for my first Interna-tional Chorus competition this past week! Also, I was able to catch up with some old friends from previous choruses I’ve sung with and those I haven’t seen in years!!! —Shaun Reynolds
1) Harmony Foundation show with Ambassadors of Harmony,
Storm Front & Rockapella.2) Several HoH guys singing tags until the wee hours Friday night /
Sat morning.3) Lunch Break’s mike test set on
Sat night. —Ralph Brown
I absolutely loved the acoustics of the stage at the Sprint Center. It was the best international contest stage that I have experienced. I hope the gurus in Nashville can duplicate that experience in the future. Sometimes things really do get better! —Pat Bauer
I enjoyed the fellowship of the Heralds of Harmony. For the commit-ment, endurance, and willingness to take the challenge to compete on the international stage. Along with the great entertaining time at the Golden Ox. For that I want to thank all those that participated. —Mark Tuttle
The thrill and excitement of competing on that
stage with 7 or 8 thou-sand in the audience is
such a rush. —Kent Jenkins
As a first-timer in Internationals, my favorite part was the privi-lege of being with, watching,
and competing with the best in the world. Kinda like being in the Olympics. —Joe McCarthy
For me, Lunch Break’s overall creativity. Specifically, the abil-ity to sing a contest set that referred to the results of the pre-vious contest session. —Ed McKenzie
Hotel was great. Transportation was good and well publicized. I thought the Sprint cen-ter was a great stage. The Power & Light area was loud!! The daily newsletter was helpful to keep you informed. I think it was great. —Dick & Liz Sipple
I had not been on the International stage since 1993, so it was nice to see how much it has changed from downright gaudy tuxedos, umpteen versions of “Darkness on the Delta”, and an abundance of Sansabelt pants (although I still spotted a few of those wandering around) to a pretty diverse (and somewhat “hip”) gathering of people who share our hobby. All this bull about this being a “dying form of entertainment” was totally quashed for me. If “they” can make it work in their city, then so can we. I realized how far we have come...and am seeing how far we have to go. Our true capabilities are just being discovered- and yet, we still managed a decent showing on the biggest stage. That contest managed to make a very competitive person even more so. I enjoyed seeing the passion that we have (as a group) for what we do...”Forget Hell!” On to Portland! —Chuck Steiner III
• Surprisingly high quality of the college quartet singing -- all worthy contenders.• Happy that the performances were at the same venue for all contests and the AIC and HF shows, and that the AC was cool and the facility was fairly smoothly operated.• contests seemed to run along at a good pace, and the emcee’s were good.• Storm Front made us laugh again..... and again. Hard to catch our breath. Glad they appeared often during the week.• Happy that we had Sunshine quartets Flashback, Pursuit, and Mainstreet to root for in the “regular” Q contest.• Good selection of restaurants to choose from. • Power & Light District was conveniently across the street from the main venue.• Enjoyed the AIC Show best of the shows. Enjoyed the Suntones’ performance... What a great sound from the granddaddy of performing quartets. —Billl & Linda Phipps
What I love most about Internationals is the chance to see new places of the world, to catch up with friends I haven’t seen in years, and to do some singing as well! —Andrew Wheeler

The Barbershop Harmony Society (SPEBSQSA, Inc.) traces its beginnings to a chance meeting in the lobby of the Muehle-bach between two businessmen from Tulsa, OK, in 1938. The two found two other men and sang their way through a snowstorm that had marooned them there. A few weeks later, they convened several like-minded singers at a meeting in Tulsa and the 25,000 member International organi-zation was founded. The original meeting is commemorated on a plaque in the restored original lobby of the hotel. Source: Wikipedia.

HOH Celebrates July 4th with a big bangThe Heralds of Harmony participated in the Brandon Fourth of July parade, recognized as the 4th largest parade in Florida with more than 40,000 parade viewers.
The Brandon Kiwanis Club invited HOH to participate in the parade after a quartet that included John Santamaria, Steve Matheson, Russ Powell, and Ralph Brown performed for the club at a breakfast meeting.
Steve organized a quartet to perform and it escalated into a group of 11 people from the Heralds. A quartet sang from the float while the others carried the 18’ HOH banner behind the float. Singers switched places along the 2.5 mile route. Ed McKenzie, Lynn Hineman, and Chuck Steiner sang bass; Chris Overstreet, Chris Barthhauer, and Marty Port sang baritone; Steve Matheson and Keith Starks sang lead, and Ray Scalise sang tenor. Dick Sipple helped on the float and carried the banner and Liz Sipple was the official HOH photographer. Everyone displayed their new Kansas City HOH T-shirt.
About half way through the parade everyone gathered in front of the judges’ stand and performed God Bless America. All 100 floats in the parade were required to have music and the Brandon Kiwanis Club/HOH float won the “Best Musical Float” award, a big honor for parade participants. The Heralds were also featured in the news story about the parade on Fox13 TV.
The Brandon Kiwanis Club is very appreciative of HOH for helping them win the award.

I don’t know about many of you, but I can’t say those words without hearing the voice of Bill Wunderlin in my head :). Hi Bill.
It is time to get serious about the Fall Contest. At the posting of this edition of the HERALD we are only six short rehearsals away from the Fall contest, and it is going to be full of stiff competition. That means a lot of hard work and dedication is needed between now and then. The contest will be held at the Orlando Marriot. The same location as this year’s Spring contest. This is when we qualify to go to Portland to sing on the 2012 International Stage so everyone get on board!
On The Risers!
Heralds Appear on America Sings On Wednesday, July 27th the Heralds appeared on GMC Channel’s America Sings program and could win $10,000.
America Sings uses videos of previous performances and they chose The Heralds’ You’re Nobody ‘Till Somebody Loves You (Billy’s Bistro) arrangement performed in 2007 at the International Convention in Denver. (more on page 3)

Inaugural Semi-Annual Burt Szabo’s Tag Teaching Seminar
The Inaugural Semi-Annual "Burt Szabo's Tag Teaching Seminar" will take place on Saturday, October 22, 2011, from 0930 to 1600 (9:30AM to 4:00PM) at the recreation rooms of Burt Szabo's apartment complex at 515 South Conway Rd, 32807, in Orlando. If you Google it, you will see how handy it is.
The seminar leaders will be Burt Szabo, Keith Hopkins, and Bart Van de Mark. We will try to limit it to twenty participants. We will do some “$5 foot-longs” for lunch and will have coffee available in the morning. We will also supply water. The cost will come out of the Chapter Development Budget for the District.Perhaps, your Chapter will pay your transportation?
However, we need to be confident you will show up eagerly if you say you will.So raise your right hand...
The object, of course, is to give you ways to teach EASY tags to the new, young, or not-so-young man walking in the door for the first time and give him an instant feeling that he can do this stuff and can be successful right out of the box. In addition, maybe, just maybe, you could become a Lobby Star at conventions.
Let me know and I will put your name on my list and send you some easy tags to peruse FREE OF CHARGE! Several are included, here, to get you started.

Brandon: A brand new Walmart Market #5826 in Brandon has granted $1,000 to support the Heralds of Harmony youth Harmony Program. The welcomed news came as a Heralds Community Outreach Quartet performed the Star Spangled Banner at the Grand Opening of the very same Walmart store, at dawn’s early light of August 31. HoH vP Financial Development, Bill Phipps, had applied for the grant a month earlier through Walmart’s Local Community Contribution (LCC) program where individual Walmart stores select gift recipients and determine amounts through an on-line application process. Bill reports that Walmart believes in operating globally and giving back locally. Their LCC program enables Walmart facilities to support the needs of their local communities by providing funding to organizations working to improve the lives their associates, customers and neighbors. HoH youth Harmony Director, Arne Helbig, and the Heralds crew of volunteers, and Sweet Adelines volunteers, will be producing the this year’s vocal
workshops in Pinellas on Sept 13, and in Hillsborough on October 7. Helbig always lines up top-notch music clinicians and teaching-quartets. He expects as many as 700 boys and girls, and their choral directors, to attend the educational harmony workshops this year — at no cost to them nor their 32 schools. The Pagliara Charitable Foundation provides major funding support for the yHW’s. This is the 14th year of this proud HoH tradition in community involvement.

SdaQC 1st annUal SHoWThe Sunshine District Association of Quartet Champions (SDAQC) is proud to announce that our first annual show will be held on Friday night, September 23, at the Fall District Convention immediately fol-lowing the quartet prelims.
The one hour show will feature the SDAQC chorus under the di-rection of Tony DeRosa, and cameo appearances by past District champs. So far we have commitments from One Shot Deal, Back-beat, Rounders, Wise Guys as well as our current champs, The PuR-SuIT.
We’re thrilled to announce that our headliners will be the fabulous Suntones... 50 years after their winning of the International Quartet Championship. Without question, the Tones are the most famous quartet to ever come from the Sunshine District, and we’re thrilled they have agreed to perform for our first SDAQC show!
There will be NO additional charge for this show! It will be included with the convention all events registration or the Friday night tick-ets.

The Heralds of Harmony extend their condolences to the families of Bill Cole and Merle Bates.
in memoriam
Bill Cole passed away August 22nd at the young age of 46 and leaves behind a wife, Monika, and 5 sons; Gregory, James, Charles, Stephen and Patrick. Bill had been battling cancer for some time.
As well as being a fellow HoH Bar-bershopper, Bill was also a graduate of Southern Methodist university, an active member of Palma Ceia united Methodist Church, and enjoyed golf and was an avid Rays fan.
Survived by his parents, Dr. James Cole and his mother, Jean; wife, sons, and sisters, Marti Marcus (Kennedy) and Tracy Lyons (Scott).
The chorus was very important to Bill and he loved singing with the Heralds. He was an excellent baritone and an even better father and friend. He is missed by many.
in memoriam
merle BateS Merle passed away this month as a result of a brain hemorrhage. He was 66. He
died at St. Joseph’s hospital in Tampa. He was originally from Bradford, Pa.
Many of you never knew Merle but he was big booming Bass with the old Tampa Chapter and Harmony Factor quartet back in the late 70’s.
Merle was an all around good guy - very friendly and likable.

The Heralds of Harmony Sing Right Here program will be sharing our “why” with singing students starting two weeks after contest. Our “why” is simply: we enjoy singing better! So we learn about proper singing techniques, reading music, listening to learning tracks and rehearsal recordings, all in an effort to enjoy singing bet-ter. When that happens, we get paid every Tuesday night with the warm fuzzies we get when we sing. The fellowship and relation-ships is a side benefit.
The students will be in class from 6:30 to 8:00 each night. Dan McFarlane and Brian Weber will warm them up and Steve will teach from 7 to 8. At 8 PM, the Heralds will be taking a break at the same time as their class ends. They will be invited to join us to continue singing and see how what Steve has been teaching them works in the real world of barbershop chorus singing.
We, of course, will be working on the Christmas show repertoire. Please be sure to bring your own music. TWO REASONS: First, you will want to review the notes and words since you haven’t sung the songs in a year and you need to check. Second, the limited number of guest books will be for the guests. I don’t think you will want to have a guest without a music book because a Herald who forgot his music is using it. A third reason might be that we want to demon-strate by our actions that we periodically check ourselves by refer-ring to sheet music on songs we haven’t sung in a while.
We’re going to have a great time and I’m looking forward to each student who chooses to join us on the risers being blown away by the friendliness and helpful assistance of us Heralds.
More to come as class time gets closer.
~Edward McKenzie, vP Chapter Development
