“Ads by DNS Unlocker” is a virus of the well-known Adware class. This type of malware

has been well documented to induce numerous pop-up windows to appear on your screen,

most of them being advertisements, thus the “Ad” part in the name. What is common for

these ads is they are fake and just a clever ruse for the user to be tricked into clicking on

the pop-ups. Once this happens you will be redirected to shady websites and prompted to

install different types of software under the pretense of missing “codecs”, different

program updates, anti-virus programs or tools to deal with a “detected” threat. It’s safe to

say you should never and under any circumstances interact with such pop-ups, unless you

are inclined to deal with the additional virus creations that are going to infest your

computer.

In addition to the more dangerous ways in which “Ads by DNS Unlocker” can affect you,

most of which will be mentioned below in our removal guide, you can also expect to

experience:

General and considerable slowing down of your PC.

Critical system errors.

Bigger load times

You are probably aware by now that you need to remove “Ads by DNS Unlocker”. You can

now continue with our removal guide.

“Ads by DNS Unlocker” is fully capable to infect all of your browsers and has probably

already done so. You need to apply the whole process step by step for each internet

browser. Before you proceed please take a moment to read through this paragraph as it

contains important information. This type of virus in notorious for the ways in which it will

completely from your device.

For Internet Explorer Users:

screen like this when you click Uninstall, choose NO:

Hold the Windows Key and R again – but this time copy + paste the

following and click OK:

notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts

A .txt file will open – don’t touch anything there. If you are hacked and someone has

access to your PC, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. This

is what a hosts file looks like:

If there are a bunch of strange IPs connecting to you below “Localhost” you may be

hacked, and it’s best to ask us in the comments for directions.

Go to STEP 5.

STEP 5:

Open the Task Manager by right clicking on the Taskbar and choosing Start Task

Manager.

Once it opens, choose the Processes Tab. Look at all of the processes in front of you and

try to determine which ones are a virus. Google them or ask us in the comments and we

will provide the best assistance we can.

A BIG WARNING HERE! READ THIS BEFORE

PROCEEDING!

Dear user this is probably the most critical stage in the whole removal process.

Please take under advice that anything you do in the next few steps is crucial to

successfully removing this virus from your computer. Unfortunately if you mess something

up you might severely and irreversibly damage your system. Continue only if you

are completely sure you want to take such risks. If not please consider downloading a

professional “Ads by DNS Unlocker” remover.

In either case you can’t risk leaving this threat to remain on your hard drive. The virus is

known to collect personal information including user names and passwords. You might be

in big trouble if you use any type of online payment methods and let’s face it nowadays

most people do. Your personal information will be stored in a file and send to the creators

of “Ads by DNS Unlocker” at a later stage, problem is nobody knows how much time you

have before this happens. One thing is clear- you need to act quickly and remove it as

soon as possible.

Right click on each of the virus processes separately and select Open File

Location. Also, End the process after you open the folder. Just to make sure we don’t

delete any programs you mistakenly took for a virus, copy the folders somewhere,

then delete the directories you were sent to.

STEP 6 (UPDATED!):

Take a look at the following things:

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter: you will be transported to a new

window.

Page 10: IE - HowToRemove

Go in the Startup tab and Uncheck anything that has “unknown” as Manufacturer.

(UPDATE) Then go in the Services tab and do the same here.

Type Regedit in the windows search field and press Enter.

Once inside, press CTRL and F together and type the virus’s Name. Right

click and delete any entries you find with a similar name. Alternatively, if you can’t find

any this way, look in these directories, and delete the registries manually:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER—-Software—–Random numbers

HKEY_CURRENT_USER—-Software—Microsoft—-Windows

—CurrentVersion—Run– Random

HKEY_CURRENT_USER—-Software—Microsoft—Internet Explorer—-Main—-

Random

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Google\Chrome\Extensions

UPDATE 2:

In my case there were viruses in:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\

I found a bunch of CinemaPluses and CrossBrowse(r) in there.

Page 11: IE - HowToRemove

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

\Uninstall

In here I found something called Iminent Toolbar and Linkey. These are both viruses.

There may be others. My recommendation for practically anything in this step is to

carefully review all the strings I originally mentioned one by one, and these two new ones.

Anything at all that seems it may be related to DNS Unlocker – google it. See where that

leads you. At least for now it has worked for me.

STEP 7 (UPDATED!):

We received some new information for the DNS Unlocker removal procedures – a big

thank you to Ricardo Lira for this. We (foolishly) did not take into account something

DNS Unlocker Removal From Chrome/Firefox/IE - HowToRemove.guide http://howtoremove.guide/dns-unlocker-removal-chrome/

Page 12: IE - HowToRemove

that should have been obvious: DNS Unlocker tampers with your DNS settings. To remove

it completely you have to restore these settings. We will show you how to do this here

(again, taken from Ricardo Lira‘s comment, and edited):

Type Control Panel in the Windows Search field, hit enter. From then on navigate

to Network and Internet —> Network and Sharing Center —-> Change Adapter

Settings.

Right-click your active internet connection and click properties. Under

the Networking tab, scroll down to Internet Protocol Version 4

(TCP/IPv4). Highlight (left click) that then click on properties. Both options in this

window should be automatic! The first option should be set to “Obtain an IP address

automatically” and the second should be set to “Obtain DNS server address

automatically!”

WARNING!

If your computer belongs to a company or you actually have a custom DNS then this would

not apply to you. Once you are finished, click “OK” and close the window. Now go back into

your browser and it should work just fine.

UPDATE 2:

I have DNS Unlocker on one of my PCs as well – and I spent the last few days trying to

crack this thing. I found some of its files on my PCs temp files. You can easily access them

by doing the following:

First, open your Control Panel, and click on Folder Options —> View, click Show

hidden files and folder and unclick Hidden extensions for known files

types. After that, click Apply.

Next, hold the Windows Key and R at the same time. Then type in the new

field %temp% and hit Enter. Delete all the files in the directory you were sent to – even if

they are not part of DNS Unlocker, they are only temporary files that will be deleted

anyways, so better safe than sorry.

Also go in your Program Files and Program Data

Folders (on both the C: and D: drives) and look around for anything resembling a virus –

sort the folders by date and look for ones created when the virus first appeared.

If you believe the adware is still lurking somewhere in your browsers, as a last resort, you

can navigate to your Appdata folder and delete your profile for that browser. All your

settings will be gone, but any residuals of virus as well. Also delete any other folders in

Appdata that you believe were created by the virus.

STEP 8 – Optimization

We’ve prepared a short and sweet optimization guide, specifically designed for users who

just removed a virus. It is completely free, you do not need to download anything, and it’s

not very time consuming. If you are interested – How To Remove Guide’s

Optimization Tips (http://howtoremove.guide/pc-optimization-tips/).
