Celebrating the Mission of the Catholic Church in Northeast St. Louis County

Human Development is Evangelization EVERY POPE IN OUR LIFETIMES has taught that the work of the Church is to enable every human being to achieve their fullest God-given potential. This is the responsibility of government at every level as well as of faith communities however they may be organized and wherever they may be established. It is the desire of many of our parishioners and the intent of our

parish leaders that the presence of the Catholic Church be established at this location for the long-term future. Therefore, we have established or intend to explore PARTNERSHIPS such as these that will enable us to fulfill our mission as Church in the communities we are here to serve.

Over 10 years on the recommendation of the Catholic Education Office the Annual Catholic Appeal and Today & Tomorrow Foundation have awarded over $1 million for operating our school and tuition assistance.

Also, for 10 years the Archdiocesan Finance Office has utilize space in our Community Center for a Shared Accounting Office serving the needs of 30+ parishes and helping to insure the highest levels of transparency and accountability we need for the future. We have recently renewed their lease for $20,000 through April 2016.

This weekend we completed our 2nd professional development program for childcare providers. This initiative of

our Council is jointing sponsored by ARCHS (Area Resources for Community and Human Services) and Riverview Gardens Early Childhood Development Program with suppor t from our Pastoral Council Development Fund.

We will also be hosting a 3 day conference in November in the Community Center with Share—Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support, designed to provide training and resources for caregivers of families suffering the tragedy of pregnancy loss and infant death.

We are now in the process of conducting site visits and formal discussions with several of the organizations of Catholic Charities St. Louis, notably Catholic Family Services, hoping to use space in our Par ish Office Center for professional counseling and therapeutic services & St. Francis Community Services, consider ing our Community Center for a new program designed to assist families to get out of poverty. You may have read about this in the St. Louis Review last week.

Finally, Committed Caring Faith Communities, an alliance of faith-based organizations, is interested in using the Community Center for a 16 session education and intervention program for African-American males (ages 8 to 16) beginning in early 2016.

Vision & Key Responsibilities Parish Pastoral Council In early 2013 our Parish Pastoral Council reorganized in order to—

• strengthen our Catholic presence in Northeast St. Louis County as a sign of saving unity,

• keep our parish vibrant, and

• promote human development as a fundamental work of evangelization

To achieve this vision one of our Council’s key responsibilities is—

Forging new partnerships between our parish and other organizations who share our mission.

Therefore, in January 2014 our Council recommended that establishing PARTNERSHIPS that would enable parish outreach should be one of our three parish priorities for the next 3 to 5 years. Specifically these partnerships would address human development needs within our parish community.

THE HEALTHY BENEFITS OF FRUITS

Fruits benefit us by providing us with carbs, fiber and vitamins essential for our bodies to function properly. Here are some of the fruits that support our natural body rhythms and health. • APPLES : Contain a number of anti-

oxidants that reduce damage from viruses and bacterial infections. They contain fla-vonoids that help reduce risk of strokes, coronary heart disease and heart attacks.

• BANANAS: A good source of fiber,

magnesium, potassium and vitamins C and B6. They also contain tryptophan which is a protein that converts to seroto-nin which helps to treat depression. East-ing bananas can elevate your mood and help you feel relaxed and happy.

• ORANGES: Great source of fiber, calci-

um potassium and vitamins B1 and A. They offer immune support and help re-duce the risk of cancer and inflammation

The health benefits of fruit can be found in dried or fresh fruit as well as juices. Dried fruit generally contains more nutrients be-cause it is concentrated. Eating 5 servings a day of fruit will make sure your body re-ceives the benefits it needs to support a healthy, functioning system. Enjoy, S. Rose, SSND. RN
