POST HPS STATUS: ANNUAL EVALUATION

• To assess whether school activities have been linked with

other health programmes e.g. Mental Health, Nutrition, Chronic Diseases, Oral Health etc.

• To establish if there is a profile of health problems in the school, whether it has been communicated to the local PHC facility, e.g. any physical, emotional, mental

or social problem• To evaluate the impact of Health Promotion in the

school on the disease profile,• To identify the phase/stage of the Health

Clinical/Assessment process by school health teams at the school

• To ascertain if there is a community profile of resources at the school

• To establish whether the community is participating in activities at school and having their skills developed at

the school

CASE STUDYSokhela Pr. Sch.: Deeply rural area, no electricity, High unemployment, poverty…..• OBJS – sustain PSNP, establish food garden, improve oral health, improve rain H2O

harvesting, eradicate Scabies, assist learners with barriers to educ.

• Implementation: Needs assessment – shortage of H2O, hunger (Vit A), rabies,scabies,access to hand washing tools, no kitchen facilities, limited access to potable H20,

• Implementation Plan: Plans – build a Kitchen, cont. of PSNP, gutters /tanks(harvest rain H20),recycle gray H20 for use in veg. gardens + fencing, training of learners + community on veg.prod., establish pilot garden site, Scabies educ prog., Oral Health intervention, hand washing prog, & “Tippy Taps” learners with barriers identified & assisted. Linking all above to curriculum.

• Monitoring & Evaluation: Scabies eradicated. Rabies – Nil. Oral Health improved. Food gardens established + training on food prod. Duck / chick pilot project.

• Stakeholders: Oral Hygenist, Sch Health Nurse, EHP, Dept. Agriculture, Veterinary Services, Members of Community, SGB, Local Councillor, Local Municipality.

CONSTRAINTS

• Need to strengthen & sustain partnerships

• No dedicated HPS facilitators on District level.

• High level of attrition amongst staff – constantly build capacity & train on HPS.

• Need standardized national HPS criteria / tool.

• Resources differ from District to District – some weak / others strong.

• Need additional staff @ Provincial level to accelerate the process / progress.

Future Plans = C U R E D

• Continue with Schools Essay Competition as entry point for HPS

• Use entry points for HPS-:– Malaria Control Programme – TB as entry point for HPS in eThekwini District (NDOH)

Roll out NAP in all HPS schools.• Establish Cluster Team to do Final HPS assessments.• DOE to be supported with HPS initiative in the Schools

Centres of Care & Support for sustainability.
