I won’t be travelling to London for the Olympics but I will be there to see the Olympic flame arrive back in London the day before the Olympics begin including a concert in Hyde Park.

Whatever your plans I hope you have an enjoyable summer, and that we get some sun!

Local Student Carries the Olympic Torch Samuel Horton is an exceptional young man. He has an excellent aptitude and discipline in all that he undertakes. As part of the UKs Olympic pledge and as a Sports Leader he has twice been to Brazil with International Inspirations at his own cost. Here he was a spokesperson for his school and assisted in taking planned sports to a deprived favella area in Maceio along with other members of the school and the support of his peers and teachers including Miss Mel Clarke, Head Of P.E.at Serlby Park Academy. He is a natural athlete and sportsman. Throughout his life he has dedicated himself to learning different sports. He played football for Harworth Colliery Juniors before playing for both Worksop Town and Retford United. Above all he is a gymnast and coaches children at the local sports centre where he is also a qualified life guard at the pool. At school he was Deputy Head Boy at Serlby Park Academy where he gives up his free time to help his peers and younger pupils in their learning. Here he has completed his A Level studies and is hoping to commence a degree course at York St Johns University in September this year. He runs and organises a street dance class after school in his own time. The opportunity of being part of the torchbearers was a great reward for Samuel's continuing efforts. Samuel was nominated and selected as one of only 8,000 people rewarded for their inspirational activities to run a leg of the journey around the UK bringing the Olympic Flame to local communities. His moment to shine came when at 7.35 am on 30th June 2012 Samuel ran through the streets of Burton on Trent holding the Olympic Torch with members of his family and friends cheering him on. Samuel is currently arranging to visit the local schools in our area taking the Olympic Torch with him, to inspire the children and bring the Olympics home.

He unfortunately arrived into care as he wasn’t getting along with one of the dogs in his previous pack.

We have found Forrest to be a very affectionate, loving dog; he does appreciate his own space though.

He is brilliant on a lead and is a pleasure to walk. He does have a strong ‘prey drive’ however and if let off the lead will chase small animals.

We feel that he would be better in a home where he would be the only dog. Although he is happy to walk alongside another dog he doesn’t like to share with them. We are looking for a loving, calm home for Forrest where we know he would be most happy and would thrive to become a much loved member of the family. If you feel you could offer Forrest the ideal home that he is so desperate for please come up to

The next meeting of the group will take place on Tuesday 7th August, starting at 10.30 am, at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. Everyone is welcome to come along, help us to make Harworth/Bircotes an even better place to live, and maybe make new friends and learn some new facts in the process. We are a small livery based in Harworth old village. We try to offer livery that is flexible to our clients needs at the end of the day every horse is different and we all unless we are very lucky have to fit our horsie lives around work and family commitments. We may not be perfect but we will try to help you as much as we can to enjoy the time you spend with your horse.

We have several fields around the village which are now grassed down for horse livery. Our main livery area is down Common Lane. We have organised this area into acre mini paddocks so that we can try to keep every

owners horse/ horses separate, making poo picking, feeding, handling and catching easier to manage.

So we feel you get the best of both worlds, your own private horse paddock but with horsie neighbours to hack out with and company for any horses in paddocks on their own. A rt Review and What’s Going On August 2012 Hilary Cartmel

It’s a hard call to say which was the most pleasurable – Neil MacGregor’s short series on Radio 4: ‘Shakespeare’s Restless World’ or Simon Schama’s ‘This England’ and ‘Hollow Crowns’ two parter on BBC2. The telly is awash with programs about the Bard, and what fantastic stuff it is. What was so good about the MacGregor and

Schama arguments was the contextualisation of the work. They are great stories and beautiful language, but to have them placed in history with reference to the politics and society’s habits and fashions was an eye-opener.

There have been some stunning new takes on the plays. The Richard II with Ben Wishaw in the lead left, in my opinion, the older interpretations standing, his mincing rendering of the ineffectual king was so superior to Jacobi’s camp foppish characterisation – the crisply enunciated phrases of Sir Lawrence Olivier, Sir John Geilgood, Vanessa Redgrave are Derek Jacobi are far too plumy for today’s audience to engage with. Perhaps we are too used to modern camera work and lighting. Too used to realism. Even on stage the work today is fresher and following Ethan Hawke’s ruminations on Macbeth the Crucible is staging it this Autumn directed by Daniel Evans. If it’s half as good as their Hamlet 2 years ago, it will be worth an evening out.

All this is part of the World Shakespeare festival / London 2012 Festival. And for the price of a theatre ticket the British Museum have an exhibition, which no doubt Neil MacGregor has had something to do with entitled Shakespeare staging the World The exhibition provides a unique insight into the emerging role of London as a world city, seen through the innovative perspective of Shakespeare’s plays.

Miro at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park has been on exhibition a while now. I thought I’d be clever and go on a quiet day, avoid the weekend crowds, you know, have a peaceful amble round the work. Just me and the bronzes. So I decided on a Monday morning. YSP opens at 10am, so perfectly timed I drove in the gates at five to ten to find 3 coaches and about 30 cars in the car park, and the café’s balcony already bursting with customers. Needless to say I joined them. YSP simply doesn’t have an empty day. Several school parties were visiting as well as people like me, boots on and ready for several hours of walking and looking. The Miro exhibition is the first of its kind in the UK, and for that reason alone worth the trip. The work has come from museums and collections in Spain and Mallorca. Joan Miro was a tour-de-force in the modern art movement and his images are iconic and of that period. His paintings seem to sum up Mediterranean sunshine, football, olive oil and oranges. The show is definitely worth seeing, however there is some strange work in amongst it, and this was brought home, going round the exhibition with a group of young teenage boys, clip board questionaires in their hands. One rushed up, looked at the sculpture with a crescent moon that I was musing over and declared ‘it’s a banana on a stool’ and stomped off…and I had to admit – there it was, albeit bronze and brightly coloured, beautifully observed and interpreted! Also showing is a group of small works by Anthony Caro and the Longside Gallery has work by Anish Kapoor. www.ysp.co.uk

Zumbathon Proud parents Samantha Chapman and Dan Footitt organised a Zumbathon in aid of NORSACA (Nottinghamshire Regional Society for Adults and Children with Autism) which was held at St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School on Saturday 26 June.

As well as the 2 hour Zumbathon there were refreshments, a bouncy castle, face painting and a raffle. As a result of their hard work they were able to present a cheque for £840 to the charity.

At the interval the dancers tied knots as part of the Knots in Notts campaign making a pledge to do their bit for a worthwhile cause, in this case raising awareness and funds for NORSACA.

Crime Reduced in Harworth and Bircotes area Overall crime in Harworth and Bircotes continues to fall and is currently showing a reduction year on year of 24%. This is compared with offences from April to July 2011 and with offences from April to July 2012, Burglary Other offences are showing a reduction year on year of 57% and Vehicle crime a reduction of 30% year on year. The reduction in crime is largely due to several recent successful prosecutions and sentencing of prolific offenders. Over the past couple of months :-

A Male from the Harworth area has been sentenced for 14 months imprisonment after been found guilty of Burglary.

A Prolific Burglar from the Harworth area has been sentenced to 3 years imprisonment where he has an early release date of July 2013 where if released around that time will be released on licence. HELPING HANDS AWARD – PUPILS’ COMMUNITY WORK COMMENDED Scores of Nottinghamshire school children have been commended for working with the police to tackle important local issues. Schools across the county signed up to the Helping Hands Award initiative earlier this year, which encourages pupils to identify issues that affect their communities as well as coming up with solutions to the problem. The schools embarked on months of project work exploring issues like speeding motorists, raising awareness around race and equality, and arson. Each school has been working with their local police beat teams and representatives from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, as well as other local agencies. The pupils submitted their findings and accomplishments to the Helping Hands Award judges, who announced the winners at a presentation at the Bonnington Theatre in Arnold on Tuesday (19 June).

All Saints Primary School in Harworth took first place after setting up a ‘speed watch’ initiative to tackle speeding vehicles outside their school. The Class Six pupils worked to devise ways to improve the safety of the road. They were awarded £1,000, which they plan to use to buy child-shaped bollards to place outside the school to discourage speeding. In second place was Serlby Park Primary School in Bircotes, who were given £500 after deciding to encourage pupils to turn their backs on high-tech games and mobile phones to embrace active games from the past.

The pupils put the fun back into physical exercise and encouraged others to get fit and healthy. They were supported by their local officers, PCSOs Colin Haywood and Kendra Jacob, who were also handed outstanding achievement awards at the event. Mansfield’s Sutton Road Primary School scooped £300 after taking third prize for their work raising awareness around race and equality.

Kathleen Faulconbridge, Youth Issues Co-ordinator for Nottinghamshire Police said: “The pupils who took part in the Helping Hands Award scheme gave a considerable amount of time and effort to try and make their communities a better and safer place to live.

“They have worked very closely with their local police beat teams, who have valued the opportunity to build relationships and help them to improve and develop the area in which they live.

“The work carried out by the conscientious youngsters will have increased their knowledge and understanding of the challenges and issues within their community, which could have huge benefits in the long term as they are now considering the massive impact their actions could have on the people around them.” Man dies in crash A motorcyclist has died following a road collision in Bircotes. The crash, between a motorbike and a Ford Focus car, happened in Blyth Road (A614), near to the junction with Scrooby Road, at about 3.15pm on Monday 18th June 2012. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the car was treated for shock. Blyth Road, between Serlby Crossroads and the junction with Scrooby Road was closed for several hours whilst police carried out their enquiries. Witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to contact the Crash Investigation Unit on 101, extension 800 2225, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. LOCAL YOUTH CENTRE ACHIEVES OUTSTANDING AWARD On 21st May 2012 the Scrutiny and development board visited and inspected the Harworth and Bircotes Young peoples centre and graded the centre as outstanding. The inspection was based on the following :- How many young people at the centre Young peoples voice and influence - If the young people have a say in how the centre is run

i.e youth forum Positive activities at the centre. Effective communication from staff Equipment available if sufficient resources and equipment Appropriate opening pattern, an appropriate balanced programme. The local neighbourhood policing Team would like to congratulate the youth centre, the youth workers and young people who attend in achieving this grade as they have worked tirelessly for the past 12 months to make the youth centre a success. PRIORITY SETTING MEETING ( What was the Safer Neighbourhood Group Meeting) From the Priority Setting Meeting held on July 11th 2012 the three local priorities have been identified from feedback received from the community by the priority survey forms regarding issues of greatest concern and issues the public wanted the safer Neighborhood Team to tackle. Resonance: Music Section Blackfest III – Saturday 4th August 2012 Following on from the success of last years Blackfest Music Festival, it’s time to announce the details for this year’s event. As in previous years there will be live music throughout the day on an outdoor stage in the Blacksmith’s Arms beer garden. Doors will open at 11am and the first act will hit the stage at 2:30pm.

It’s a charity event and all proceeds will go to Bassetlaw Hospice, Cancer Research and the Sure Start Centre; so far we’ve raised an amazing £1750 for charity. Tickets are £10 for a whole day ticket or £5 for a half day ticket (half day tickets expire at 7pm – ideal if you have to take the kids home or can’t stay all evening). Tickets are available from the bar at the Blacksmiths Arms – word of warning – tickets ran out well in advance of the festival last year so get your tickets now to avoid disappointment. Children under 16 (accompanied by an adult) and OAP’s can get in for free. Children must be clear from the inside of the pub by 7pm but they are welcome to stay in the beer garden if they are accompanied by an adult.

T ickhill & District Lions Many of you may not realise that Lions Clubs International (of which Tickhill & District Lions is part) is the largest service club organisation in the world. There are over 45,000 other Lions clubs across the globe, made up of members who give their time to make a difference and help those in need. This gives us a great community of like minded

people to join up with, that together enables us to do things that we simply couldn’t achieve on our own.

On the 11th of August, many of the clubs in our district are getting together to host our 32nd annual Lions Fun Day for the Disabled at Sandall Park (off Barnby Dunn Road) in Doncaster. This event is fully funded by the Lions groups that take part, making it free to all participants and open to all disabled people, whatever their age or disability.

Starting from 10.30am there will be a host of activities throughout the day, including many events taking place in marquees and under cover, so even if the unseasonably wet weather continues it still promises to be a great day. Every competitor receives a medal just for taking part, and at the end of the day some will also be presented with a trophy.

A MESSAGE FROM HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES TOWN COUNCIL

What awful weather! I think we are all getting tired of rainy days and heavy downpours – when will we get any sunshine? The grass is so wet that Councils programme for grass gutting in the cemetery and elsewhere has been disrupted; however, staff have been trying to address this where possible, and where the mower can’t operate then strimming has been taking place.

A barrier has been put in place at the access to All Saints Church. Why? – to stop miscreants who take their cars as near as possible to the church steps, get up to mischief and leave a pile of litter. Council is happy to help the church, and those residents who live nearby.

Council is negotiating with Notts. County Council for a replacement bus shelter outside the Devonshire Road Community Centre; you may recall the original was destroyed by a car. County tell us they are waiting for their insurers. We are also asking that the brick shelter opposite, on Bawtry Road, be removed and a new one installed. Perhaps this will discourage whoever is using it as a urinal to think twice!

The new supermarket. We can all see the progress being made; the workmen are really cracking on with this. There was one ‘glitch’, however, when the old colliery gates at the bottom of Colliery Road were opened and large lorries started using this access point to access the site. This was not in the original plans, and the residents had to bear the brunt of the noise and heavy traffic. It took several phone calls, a visit to the site and a meeting with a manager of UK Coal to resolve the problem. Furthermore, I have to congratulate the residents who organised a petition protesting about the traffic, - so well done for taking action!

The Lengthsman Pilot Scheme. Harworth and Bircotes Town Council has been chosen to participate in this pilot by Notts. County Council, along with several other parish councils in this area. We are the ‘lead council’ because we are the biggest and we have the necessary staff and equipment.

What is it about? Basically it is about being more efficient with the public purse. County have looked at all the work it carries out and has identified the simpler tasks that could be carried out at Parish level. For example, instead of sending out a couple of men all the way from Mansfield to clean the bus shelters or road signs, or cut the grass verges and clear back grass growing onto the pathways, it is more efficient to pay local parishes to do this work. The pilot will last for two years and then be evaluated
