I won’t be travelling to London for the Olympics but I will be there to see the Olympic flame arrive back in London the day before the Olympics begin including a concert in Hyde Park.

Whatever your plans I hope you have an enjoyable summer, and that we get some sun!

Welcome to our August edition of Cause for a Cuppa. Having the wettest June on record with flooding and people’s moods a bit blue, I wanted to say on a positive note … “enjoy your summer”. We are going to trust that some nice warm, sunny summer days are on their way!

Summer is a great opportunity to build memories with your children or grandchildren. I know we have talked about this before but a reminder about really important things is not a bad idea. I need reminders. The bin man has come

round on the same day of the week for the 7 years we have been in our house. But my wife still has to often remind me about setting it out. (Isn’t that sad?!)

What can you do to make this a great summer? First you need to ask yourself a few honest questions ... Are you a bit of a procrastinator? Do you work on a schedule or do you live life on the edge? What does your child/children find exciting? What can I realistically afford? If you would answer these questions, then you have taken the first step. Don’t misunderstand me. Life is all about balance. We need those times of going out and doing things … day trip to the seaside, theme park or a camping weekend. But there are also those important times of mucking about on the trampoline, colouring, Wii or kicking a football.

The things I struggle with more are those planned times of going out. For me, if I don’t put it on the diary, it’s not gonna happen. That may sound a bit boring for those who have that amazing ability to just pick up and go. But it’s just the way I am wired. For those of us who need to schedule specific things, turn off the telly, pull out the diary and write down at least one thing you are going to do during August. Get your children/grandchildren involved in helping to make the decision. Don’t allow anything to push it out of the way.

If you do well with the events out, remember the 30 minutes in the back garden is important as well. It is not a question of quantity or quality. Both are important. I realise there are limitations. But some of the most important times I can remember with my children have been the ad hoc moments.

You may not have children. Why not take the opportunities that summer time offers and have some special times with your partner. One of the most dangerous things that could happen with a relationship is that life becomes usual and boring. Why not be proactive and apply some preventative care? R OSSINGTON MAIN F.C. Last bit of information on previous season is the award winners following our Presentation Evening held recently at the Welfare. Players' Player for the 1st team went to Will McGhie with David Holvey winning the Manager's Player of the Year award. The

corresponding winners for the 2nd team were Mark Gascoigne and Will Rowley. The Supporters' award went to Jonathan Mirfin. We are now busily preparing for the new season, and following a hectic period of ground improvements off the field and a glut of pre-season training and friendly fixtures for the players, we should be ready for the start of the new season which kicks-off at 3-00p.m. on Saturday August 4th. There are a few new faces in the squad of players assembled by Manager Steve Lodge as the Club strives to match the performance of last season in a league that has increased to 22 teams.

In national Cup competitions we have been drawn to play Atherton L.R. away in the F.A. Cup extra-preliminary round on Aug. 11th, and in the F.A.Vase another away trip to Congleton Town on Sept.1st. Both clubs play in the N.W.Counties league and should either game result in a draw we will require a replay at our Oxford Street ground on the Tuesday following the original date of the tie. One other competition has been drawn at this early stage and that is our own League Cup where once again we have an away game at Teversal, near Mansfield. Sadly, because of the increase in teams in the NCEL, the league have suspended the Wilkinson Sword Trophy and the President's Cup, the latter being denied to us on the first occasion we have qualified, based on our finish in the top 8 last season.

Finally an annual plea for any form of sponsorship for the Club. We do not pay our players (unlike most Clubs at our level) and all of the groundwork and improvements over the summer(!) have been carried out on a limited budget by a dedicated group of volunteers in their spare time. I understand that the next edition of FC Magazine may contain an article on our Club and hopefully further press coverage may only highlight the plight of many non-League sides (ie providing a valuable community service but struggling to meet escalating costs) Also an invitation to any young local players to come forward to join us at training, provided you are prepared to work hard to improve your standard of football.

R OSSINGTON M.W.B.C. Past the mid-point of the bowling season and our members cannot recall such a wet and miserable 3 months!!! However full credit to them as to date only 3 games have suffered cancellation, whilst many more matches have been completed in atrocious

conditions for our sport, the bowlers in full wet gear and on-lookers sheltering under their umbrellas. We continue to field 2 sides in the local leagues 5 times per week and often have selection problems because we have TOO MANY to select from, and this with certain members now not required (or able) to be considered for selection every time. With perhaps a few more playing members it could be feasible to run a C team on certain days, if only to avoid disappointment for those selected as reserves, but perhaps that may be stretching our resources to the limit. At present members appear satisfied to be "rested" on occasions, and sometimes when they see the weather conditions they are relieved and grateful, rather than satisfied.

The greens and surrounds keep receiving complimentary remarks from visitors to our facilities, and not only did we host the Doncaster Over 60s Pairs Competition for a full day on 29th June (just 5 days after South Lakes, Cumbria played on our greens) we have now been highly recommended to stage the South Yorkshire Mixed Pairs on both greens on Sunday July 29th. The event starts at 10a.m. with entries from Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham as well as Doncaster and is likely to last at least 6 hours. Drop down to the greens during the day to witness some good competitive bowling. Many thanks to our members who volunteer to assist with the hosting of these events and competitions, I still maintain that they keep selecting Rossington as a venue because of our hospitality, but I also appreciate that we are impinging on our own members' free time and use of the greens on each occasion.

I received a call recently whereby as part of the Olympic Year our Club could receive assistance in the organisation and staging of an event that would publicise our sport and our Club in the community, as a means of increasing participation. I have indicated that we would be interested and that our target would be to try and sell the sport to youngsters and introduce them to the game. More on this topic when I receive further information.

Rossington Councillor's Update

If you’ve missed my column (which I doubt greatly) I’ve been to see family in Australia. It was very enjoyable, even though it rained and rained; no change there then!

May was quite a successful month for the Police with 2 Quad/Motorcycles seized and a number of miscreants dealt with through the criminal system. Most crime is down yet again, well done the Police. It was the same again in June with crime generally down when normally it is up. Well done again.

The Library is getting better each day although more volunteers are needed. The rooms are should be finished by the time this is published. The Library now contains two rooms of books and a computer suite that others are jealous of. Contact 01302 865644 to help, just a few hours a week will help. Thorough training is given and volunteering can be used on a C.V.

The Vintage Vehicle and Machinery Show was a complete success. The fencing for the Welfare grounds, put in by DMBC, was finished on the Friday before the show started on the Saturday, and it didn’t rain!

The Jobs Fair held at the Holmescarr centre was also a complete success despite the torrential rain, some schools didn’t come but it was very busy all day. The raffle prize of a £40 food hamper was won by Angela Spaulding.

Steve Thomas, our Area Manager is working closely with the Parish Council the draw up a Neighborhood plan. This is crucially important to the future of our village and will result in a better village for all. This is a result of this Tory/Lib government’s Localism Act, that is, in general a pig’s ear, but this part used intelligently can work for us. Rossington will be the first and will be used as a template for all others.

John Adam, Parish Councillor, has located a Rossington world first; the first diesel electric locomotive was used in Rossington colliery in 1939 and was initially stored at Cusworth Hall, then loaned to a Leeds museum. I have asked for this to be conserved and returned to Rossington as a monument to the Colliery. I do believe the Parish Council, DMBC and your Ward Councillors will work together to make this happen. In-Home Care Having someone, whether it is a friend, family member or professional pet sitter, stay in your house while you are away is many people’s preferred option as it creates the least amount of disruption to your pet and their routine. R ossington Wheelers Cycling Club – August News As I write this its Friday 13th and its tipping it down with rain again in what must be by now one of the wettest summers in recent memory? But (and its a big but) the sun is shining on British Cycling – and bearing in mind its Friday 13th I hope this comment isn’t too tempting for fate to ignore....?

Two British riders; Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome, sit 1st and 2nd in Tour de France overall standings after today’s 12th stage and with 2/3’s of the race completed and four stages so far have been won by four different British Riders, all of whom are part of our Olympic Road Race Team. Fingers crossed all of our hopefuls stay fit through the final week of ‘the tour’!

I mentioned last month that we might not have seen the last of Rossington rider Graham Briggs on the professional scene for this year and after a strong showing and narrowly failing to defend his National Criterium Champions Jersey in Otley, Briggs has gone on to take back to back wins in the British Cycling Elite League Series in Brighouse and Stafford and was only denied a hat-trick in the series when taken out on the final bend in the Stockton event! ‘Brigga’ went on to make amends by claiming the spoils in the Premier Calendar ‘Stockton Grand Prix’ event two days later, the only event not won by a rider from the strong Endura outfit so far this year. The Elite League series concludes in Sheffield on Wed 25th July and the events have been televised on Sky Sports during the week after they took place, Briggs now has a huge lead in the series and now sits 3rd in the national professional rankings!

Speaking of big leads... Gary ‘the turbine’ Irvine has extended his lead in the AAD Gas Handicap TT League to 16 points with 6 rounds left, Gary has 59 points whilst Stephen Patterson (43) and Mark Billingham (39)Furthermore village clubs have 4 riders in the top 25 of the J E James League at present, Rossington Wheelers riders Paul Elwell – 17th 400 points and ‘the turbine’ 23rd with 368 are split by Sugarcane Creative riders Michael Brammall 5th 560 points and Tom Taylor 19th with 381. Sugarcane Creative currently sit 5th in the team standings, Rossington Wheelers 8th and Doncaster Wheelers are 11th – two events remain.

The club’s annual jaunt to the coast at Cleethorpes, the longest club run in the calendar was one victim of the elements in the last month. The 130 mile trip may yet be completed in early August. The club has now swelled to 65 members with a Sunday turnout of 20 now considered low! Most summer club runs of 75 miles are designed with a readily available shorter route of around 50 miles for those under time or fitness constraints but dedicated ‘introductory’ rides for beginners to club cycling will recommence in October on a monthly basis. Tuesday evening rides have served as the introductory ride through the ‘summer’ months.

The club now boasts an extensive catalogue of club runs and rides are barely repeated in a calendar year (though there are a few favourites still) and details of these rides and all other club information is as usual available on our website www.rossingtonwheelers.co.uk or on our Facebook page under the clubs name, or through chairman Les Hudson at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue. There is also a twitter feed @RossoWheelers that relays most event details.

T ickhill & District Lions Many of you may not realise that Lions Clubs International (of which Tickhill & District Lions is part) is the largest service club organisation in the world. There are over 45,000 other Lions clubs across the globe, made up of members who give their time to make a difference and help those in need. This gives us a great community of like minded people

to join up with, that together enables us to do things that we simply couldn’t achieve on our own.

On the 11th of August, many of the clubs in our district are getting together to host our 32nd annual Lions Fun Day for the Disabled at Sandall Park (off Barnby Dunn Road) in Doncaster. This event is fully funded by the Lions groups that take part, making it free to all participants and open to all disabled people, whatever their age or disability.

Starting from 10.30am there will be a host of activities throughout the day, including many events taking place in marquees and under cover, so even if the unseasonably wet weather continues it still promises to be a great day. Every competitor receives a medal just for taking part, and at the end of the day some will also be presented with a trophy.

Over 750 people are expected to take part, but there’s always room for plenty more. So if you know anyone who you think would enjoy the day then please let them know about it, and if you’d like more details about the event please contact Lion Reg Myers on 01302 841 580.

R ossington Tornedale School We had quite a turnout from the local community to help dig out the foundations for our new play path at Tornedale Infant School. Many thanks

to you all for coming along on a Saturday morning. You will be pleased to hear that on Wednesday a company came to surface the path and it looks lovely. As soon as it has hardened of it will be suitable for use.

The project has been funded by donations from Tickhill Lions. Some of the Lions also came to help with digging out of foundations and we were lucky enough to receive help from Phoenix Explorers from Tickhill too. Two partners of Tornedale staff, and one parent, also came to help out. A very big thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and energy. We managed to dig out the whole area, and have two tea breaks in just two hours. It just shows what team work can do!

O lympic Torch comes to Tornedale Leah Wren brought her Olympic Torch to Tornedale after running her leg in Warmsworth on 26th June. She also accompanied the

Rossington Parish Council News

At the meeting on 10th July only one member of the public wished to speak, Ron Murkin spoke on behalf of the Carnival Association in a most impassioned way given a full background history of the Carnival. On being told that their grant request had not been passed due to lack of background information he agreed to supply all the information needed at the next Strategy Committee.

A new code of conduct for Parish Councillors was discussed and it was agreed to go forward with this. The old system of an independent led Standards committee, run and organised by DMBC has been abolished and a new system of Councillor led Standards Committee run and organised by the Parish Council, has been introduced. It was suggested

that the current Governance Committee be the new Standards Committee.

It was agreed that the Parish Clerk should go to the YHRTR/ERNLLCA (sorry I don’t know what this means, but it is useful for the Clerk!) Joint Regional Training Conference in September.

The good Neighbours accounts were discussed and they were good with a surplus. This surplus has bought new cookers etc. and will be used to help next year after the DMBC grant has been reduced.

The proposed Norman Crescent/Nelson Road/Queen Mar’s Road traffic management scheme has been turned down for all sorts of spurious reasons when the real reason is cost. This was debated and the cost suggested was thought to be totally exaggerated. Councillor Barry Johnson will take this up with the head of Highways.

A Strategy Committee was held on 20th June at which a grant for public liability insurance for the Friends of Brodsworth Way was granted. Rossington Community Carnival Association’s application for a grant was not granted due to the lack of information, they were asked to resubmit their application at the next meeting. A grant application for an author who lived outside Rossington was refused.

A Triple ‘A’ meeting was held with two officers from DMBC attending, it was decided to start a draft Neighbourhood plan as soon as possible. A long discussion took place regarding UK Coal’s planning application on how it conflicted with the Neighbourhood Plan. Our Clerk attended a planning event in Tickhill.

The Projects Committee met and various updates were given and the Festival of Light will be on 19th and 20th October at the Welfare. The proposed Beer festival was discussed and CAMRA were contacted. It was agreed to invite all the pubs and clubs in Rossington to the event.

At the Regeneration Committee various planning applications were discussed and comments made. One thing should be noted especially is that there will be a local inquiry about Rossington footpath no. 16. This will be at the Welfare on Wednesday 14th November at 10.00am.

Friends of Brodsworth Way Hello everyone and what a summer we are having - or at least I hope that we are when this comes to publication!

Our July coffee morning saw a good attendance and we were able to put a table outside the pavilion and enjoy the sunshine. The coffee mornings are set to continue, the next one being on Thursday 9th August, 9:15 to 11:30 in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion. If you haven't been to one yet, give it a try. A warm welcome is assured and if you have any interesting hobbies, we would love to see them.

We have a public liability insurance policy now in place, and our appreciation and thanks go to Rossington Parish Council who have kindly helped in this regard.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind residents that the pavilion is available to hire, details can be found on the notice board outside the pavilion.

The café offers low price, good quality food that is all prepared on the premises. So come along and check out the menu. Friday Special – Roast Dinners – small £2.99 large 3.99. The community café can also be used for children’s parties – (also ceramic painting, pottery and other craft parties available). The Community Café has Volunteers working hard to provide you with professional cafe experience. All of our volunteers have been fully trained and have achieved their Food Safety Qualification Level 2. The Community Café is supporting local people in building up their confidence, gain work experience and we have also had successes recently in volunteers gaining employment.

WEA Classes starting in September Cake Decorating and Sugarcraft Tutor Priscilla Charlesworth Starting 24th September 2012 Monday 13.00 pm Beginners can learn the basics of cake decorating and the art of sugar flower making. More advance learners will be able to progress their skills in flower making, modelling and cake decorating.

Bizzy Fingers Craft Group Tutor Heather Maw Starting 20th September 2012 Thursday 13.00 pm Have a go at lots of different crafts: decorate biscuits, make Christmas Cards, Origami, knot and bead jewellery. Mainly for people with Learning Difficulties.

Going to Pot Tutor Anna-Mercedes Wear Starting 21st September 2012 Friday 10.00 am Come and try your hand in an informal and relaxed setting. This pottery course is for beginners and will introduce a variety of different hand-building techniques including pinching, coiling and slabbing. . Mainly for people with Learning Difficulties.

This pottery course is for beginners and more experienced learners using a variety of different hand-building techniques including pinching, coiling and slabbing.

Crafts for Kids During the School Holidays we have – Crafts for Kids at Holmescarr-a variety of crafts are on offer including: Parchment, Sugarcraft, T shirt painting, Card making, Ceramic and pebble painting, Origami, Sewing, Teabag folding, Beading, and more. Children under 8 must be accompanied. The cost is £5.00 per session (2nd child in a family half price). Booking is recommended. Why not call in at the Holmescarr Centre (near ASDA) – to pick up a leaflet and see our facilities and have a cup of coffee/tea in the cafe.
