ment panel lights up with all those little sym-bols. As soon as the computer verifies every-thing is working properly, the lights go off. Onoccasion, however, a light remains on and it isbest that you find your vehicle's handbookand look up a detailed explanation of whatthe light means and if the vehicle is safe todrive. Although some warning lights are spe-cific to a manufacturer or model, there are

some that are universal. Let's take a look atsome of the more common warning lights andwhat you should do in the instance they occur.

The air bag warning light indicates thereis a problem with a crash sensor, an air bagmodule, the air bag wiring or the air bag con-trol module. There are a number of reasonswhy this light might come on, such as dirty fuelinjectors, a loose gas cap, fouled spark plugs,the failure of an engine sensor or an emissionscontrol system problem. To find the exactnature of the problem, a mechanic must attachyour vehicle's diagnostic connector to a scantool. You may continue to drive your vehicleunless another light comes on. In that case,you should have your vehicle checked out as

soon as possible. If the light comes on whileyou are driving, stop the vehicle, switch theengine off for two minutes and then restart it;this may reset the engine management system.

The charging system warning light or thebattery charge warning light indicates yourvehicle is running on the battery. The chargingsystem isn't producing enough current for thevehicle's electrical needs. Your vehicle will runas long as the battery has a charge, whichmay not be very long in the daylight and evenless at night. To get more life out your battery,turn off all unnecessary electrical devices(radio, heater and defroster). The problemcould be the result of a number of things, suchas corroded or loose battery cables, an alter-nator malfunction or a damaged drive belt. If

you don't see a problem with the batterycables or the belt, start the vehicle and turn onthe lights. If they are dim, you have a problemwith the alternator or some other electricalpart. You should have the vehicle checked outimmediately.

The oil pressure warning light indicatesthe engine is low on oil or there is no oil pres-sure. Don't drive your vehicle. If you do, youwill run the risk of severely damaging theengine. Start by checking the oil level. If it islow, add some and then turn on the engine tosee if the light goes out. If it does not, you

could have a bad oil pump or a faultsure-sending unit that will needreplaced.

The temperature warning light light to be ignored. If it comes on ware driving, stop immediately andengine off. If you don't, you couextensive damage to the engine. Oengine cools off, unscrew the radand check the coolant level. Nevethe cap when the engine is hot or yrisk getting burned by coolant or waing out. Add coolant and do a quickleaks around the radiator and hoses

to hold, but anybody can get a grip on thesehelpful car care tips.

Get the soapPerhaps the simplest thing to do to take

care of your car is to wash it on a regularbasis. Washing your car once a week canhelp keep at bay the bugs, tar and otherdebris that can build up over time. Given afoothold, these things can become nearlyimpossible to clean off. If you can't manage aonce-a-week wash, try for once a month. Ifyou can't manage once a month and youhave kids, hire 'em out.

Check the oil. Stat!Your car's oil is like its blood. It needs to

be checked regularly. Check your owner's

manual for the type of oil your car uses andwhere the oil dipstick under the hood is locat-ed. At least once a month, check your oillevel. Top it off if necessary. All you need isthe oil, a funnel and some paper towels toclean up any mess.

And while you're checking the oil...Your car has other fluids that need to be

checked every so often as well. These includeautomatic transmission fluid, coolant (anti-freeze), brake fluid, differential oil and powersteering fluid. Consult your owner's manualfor the location of these fluid reservoirs.Check their levels periodically, top them offwhen necessary and have them changedwhen your manual indicates.

Hold the grease

You're keeping the outside of your carlooking sharp with regular washings, but howabout under the hood? Head to your localauto parts store and check out the variety ofdegreasers available. Follow the directionsand watch your engine sparkle. An addedbenefit to having a clean engine is it makes iteasier to locate any trouble spots (e.g.,leaks).

Windshield woesBetween washings your windshield may

get dirty from rain or snowstorms or our fine-feathered friends. A clean windshield is cru-cial to safe driving. Virtually any kind of glasscleaner and lint-free towel will have yourwindshield sparkling in no time. Don't forgetthe inside of the windshield as well. Alsocheck and clean your windows as necessary.

Out, out, damned spotIt's no fun noticing a spot or two on yourwindshield that you want to clean off andfinding out you're out of washer fluid or,worse yet, your wipers are worn out. Wiperblades should be changed about once ayear. Check your washer fluid level when youcheck the oil.

your rearview mirror and seeing the flashinglights of a police car behind you. Sometimesthe reason for a traffic stop is as simple as amissing headlight or taillight. country pull out their ladders, bucketsand scoops and prepare for the ardu-ous chore of cleaning out their gutters.

Gutters are essential for directing wateraway from the home and must be freeof debris in order to do their job effec-tively. Leaves, acorns, pine needles andmore can fill gutters quickly in the falland lead to major issues later. Gettingup on a ladder and scooping out debrisfrom gutters is not an easy task. It isquite the hassle, in fact, so much so thatmany homeowners have opted for agutter guard system.

There are hundreds of gutter guardsystems on the market. Some you caninstall yourself. Others require the skillsof a professional to install. Cost isbased on a number of factors, includingmaterials.

Gutter guard systems come in a vari-ety of materials. Some of the most com-mon include copper, aluminum, plastic,mesh and foam. There are advantagesand disadvantages to each. Copper isexpensive and difficult to install, but itwill not rust. It must be sealed periodi-cally to prevent it from turning green.

Aluminum costs less than copper and isdurable, but it can be difficult to install.Plastic is also durable, easier to installand will not rust. It can crack, however,especially in cold temperatures. Meshand foam work best as filters in guttersystems. They are inexpensive, easy toinstall and allow for better water flowall around, but they tend to get cloggedquickly.

Most gutter guard systems come intwo designs: screens or covers. Screensact as filters, allowing for more water torun through gutters while keeping outlarge debris. They are usually madefrom aluminum, foam or nylon or metalmesh. Perched inside of gutters, screensare hidden from view. They are the leastexpensive of the two designs and theeasiest to install. They are not nearly asdurable as covers, however. Covers areusually made from metal or plastic andsit on top of gutters within view. Largerthan screens, they can be difficult toinstall. Covers keep debris out of gutters

but do not allow as much waterthrough as screens do.

As with any home improvemshould do your homework wheing a gutter guard system. Find ois available in your area and wwork best for your budget andhow. If you decide to go with asional, review the options careffind out if annual inspections areed in the packages presented.
