The Washington County Fair recently announced the

winners chosen as the 2014 Leading Citizens. Winnerswere nominated by the community and were selectedbased on current activities, community service andinvolvement and volunteer activities. They are all 60years old or older and examples of AGING WITH PUR-POSE and contributing to the lives of others.

The Leading Citizen Award winners were recog-nized Wednesday, July 23, at a special program duringSenior Day at the Washington County Fair.

The 2014 Leading Citizen Award recipients are:JOHN D. ZINK, age 81, is very active. His daugh-

ter says that the older he gets the more active he gets.John attends exercise classes two times per week at theSenior Center. John is the Treasurer of his condo associ-ation. He serves on the American Legion West Bendboard for members as 1st Vice President. He is an elderon his church council and attends a Bible class everyWednesday. In addition to these activities he is an elec-tion judge for all elections held in the City of West Bend.

John also worked concessions at the Bradley Centerthis past winter for the American Legion. His hobbiesinclude reading, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, travelingwith his wife of 50 years, Louise.

ELAINE M. LAABS, age 86, lives in Germantownand is active in the Germantown community in a variety

of ways. Elaine takes care of the gardens around theGermantown Senior Center, sews patches on theGermantown Police uniforms, makes quilts for the Lioness

group, and assists the Germantown Senior Center in itsfundraising effort s. She is the Secretary of theGermantown Senior Citizen club. Elaines leadershipqualities are evident as a Girl Scout leader, chat andcraft group, and as a leader of a Dart Ball group. Sheprovides service to our military troops by leading a knit-ting group who knits caps for troops to wear under theirhelmets.

She loves to sew, knit, crochet, and play Bingo andDart ball.

The Red Sox had a 13-3 record while theKewaskum A's were in second place witha 12-3 record.

Rubicon will play at Kewaskum atnoon Aug. 8 before closing the season byhosting Hustisford Aug. 10.

Hartford was fourth in the division

with a 10-4 record. Hartford lost atSlinger Aug. 3, 3-1. The Hawks close theseason by hosting Juneau at 7:30 p.m.

tures of a home, indoors and out. It providesillumination for tasks inside and keeps bur-glars away outside. When chosen well, light-ing can also enhance a homes beauty. Hereare some tips the next time you change oradd to your outdoor lighting.

Outdoor lighting comes in many types.Post lights are mounted on a post, which isusually located near the driveway. Walllights are mounted on walls near exteriordoorson each side of the garage door, for

example. Ceiling mount lights are mountedon the ceiling of a porch or portico to illumi-nate the front entrance. Hanging lights servethe same purpose as ceiling mount lights but

make more of a statement in grandentrances and tall porches.

Make a list of the outdoor lights youneed and the amount you have to spend,and then get ready to shop. Outdoor lightscome in a variety of styles. Look for a stylethat complements the style of your home.While lanterns might work well for a beachhouse, they may not suit your contemporaryhome. You might need a sleeker, cleanerstyle.

Finish is another aspect to consider.Again, look to your house as a guide. If you

have a lot of brass, brass fixtures are theway to go. If you have a lot of ironwork,look for black fixtures. If you have a lot ofchrome, look for chrome fixtures.

Scale is vital. Too small or too large oflights can detract from the beauty of yourhome. Look for appropriate sized lights. Ifyou are looking for wall lights for a two-storyhome, for example, you should focus onlights that are 18 to 24 inches tall. Pay atten-tion to the elements in the area where thelights will go. While you might adore hang-ing lights, having one in your small porticomight not work. You dont want guests hitting

their head on the light every time they enteror exit your home.

CHRISTA KERSTEN, age 74, lives inWest Bend. Christa makes extraordinaryeffort to serve the people of the West

Bend community. She works with theInterfaith Caregivers one to two times perweek helping people with their chores,driving them to doctors appointments,shopping for them and with them, anywork that they want her to do. Christaalso volunteers at the Humane Society oneday a week. The staff there looks forwardto her help to clean the pet cages. Christaalso volunteers at the West Bend Libraryfilling the reserve requests of Librarypatrons. She also helps with the summerreading program.

She spends time knitting hats and mit-tens for the mitten tree at the Library andfor the Gingerbread House at Christmastime. Christa is an avid Tennis player. Sheplays every Tuesday in three tennisleagues and has many trophies from herparticipation in Tennis tournaments. Sheenjoys tending her garden plot with herhusband and listening to classical music.

JAMES MAERSCH, age 79, of WestBend is a friendly guy always ready witha joke, kind word and and a piece ofcandy. James served as a reading special-

ist for the West Bend School District for 31years. He was named the OutstandingNaval Reservist Ready Command Region16, has received the Legionnaire of theYear award from Legion Post 36 in WestBend. He was also a winner of the WBKVtop teacher contest.

His service to the community includesparticipation in the West Bend PoliceDepartment Crime Prevention Patrol and a19 year member of the American Legionpost 36, West Bend. He is also on theboard of directors for the Korean WarVeterans Association. He is commander ofthe West Bend Veterans color guard andfiring squad. James serves on theMemorial Day parade committee for West

Bend and is a member of the West BendSafety Commission.He has also served as Cub Scout

Master for Pack 3782, and a West BendPolice crossing guard. His involvementwith St Johns Lutheran Church includesserving as a congregational coordinatorand usher, bible study leader. He spenthis career as a teacher of reading and isPresident of the Washington-OzaukeeReading Council and newsletter editor for20 years.
