Council is progressing implementation of the Hawthorn Heritage Gap Study through Amendment C284, which proposes to include 14 individual heritage places, seven heritage precincts and four precinct extensions in a permanent Heritage Overlay. These places are currently subject to an interim Heritage Overlay.

An independent planning panel appointed by the Minister for Planning held a four-day public hearing on amendment C284 in August and the panel’s report and recommendations were released in October.

Affected property owners, and others who participated in the amendment process,

will be invited to an Urban Planning Special Committee (UPSC) meeting where Council will consider the panel’s recommendations and determine whether the Heritage Overlay should be applied to the properties identified in the Hawthorn Heritage Gap Study.

Hawthorn Heritage Gap Study update

Season’s greetings to one and all, as yet another year comes to a close.

As I have mentioned in past updates, Glenferrie is going to be the subject of a major placemaking project and you will be invited to have your say about what kind of place you would like to make it. I have seen inspirational working examples of placemaking projects in Parramatta and North Sydney and these have offered lots of valuable learnings. We can revitalise, regenerate, and renew our precinct and I hope we can collaboratively build an environment which we can all be proud of together.

In the past few months I have attended a fantastic breakfast held by Council’s

Economic Development Department at which Professor Alan Duffy, a noted astro physicist, spoke about opportunities in business for local companies in the space industry. I also met with the Bendigo Bank who partnered with Swinburne University to open a Community Bank® at Swinburne, which will reinvest banking profits into projects, programs and people at the university.

Once again it was my honour to go out with one of our Meals on Wheels volunteers on International Meals on Wheels Day. I renewed a couple of acquaintances and I am sure you all join with me in thanking all the important volunteers in our local neighbourhood for their service to our community.

Once again, may I extend my best wishes to all of you for the festive season and as I always say, please shop locally if possible, as many people stake their families livelihoods on your patronage. We should also remember that while this is a time for celebrations there are also more than 300 homeless people living in Boroondara and they, like others, are isolated due to no fault of their own. They are also in need of our best wishes and support. Let’s hope 2020 is a year of plenty for one and all.

Summer is a great time to head outdoors and enjoy the sights and sounds of our vibrant City.

Council hosts a range of free cultural events in Boroondara’s wonderful parks, with fun and exciting activities on offer for everyone.

Get into the festive spirit with the annual Grace Park Carols at 5pm to 7pm, Sunday 8 December 2019. Bring a picnic or enjoy the barbecue on offer while Boroondara Brass provide a festive program featuring choirs, soloists, local primary schools, and of course a visit from Santa.

Following on from the huge success of last year, Summer in the Park is returning with six evenings of music and film. Head down to St James Park from 5pm, Saturday 1 February 2020 to enjoy an evening of jazz music.

These events are the perfect way to spend the balmy summer nights with your family, friends and neighbours.

Council is exploring placemaking as a new approach to improving our public spaces. The Glenferrie Precinct has been identified as one of Council’s first placemaking projects and is now underway.

Placemaking is a hands-on approach to creating people centred places for the health and wellbeing of our community. It involves Council working closely with our community to reimagine public spaces, creating vibrant, memorable and social places where people feel a sense of belonging.

We have started the process by working closely with local partners and the Glenferrie Traders Association to understand how the precinct is used, and imagining placemaking opportunities.

In early 2020, you will find our friendly staff out and about on the street throughout the precinct, talking with our community about a collective vision for the place. We want to understand what it is that makes the precinct unique, what improvements could be made and how you think it could evolve in the future.

Construction of the upgraded Fashoda Street Reserve playground was completed in July and has proved popular among the local community.

This new playground is helping to build neighbourhood connections with improved accessibility and play choices for all ages and abilities, providing a balance of physical (traditional) equipment, nature-based play and imaginary play opportunities.

The playground now also features a play area for older kids with a large slide and rope climbing unit of varying difficulty,

a toddler and junior play area with a small wave slide and cubby space, and a new triple swing set for all ages.

A timber log balance circuit and semi-accessible carousel are new additions for children to enjoy. A ‘digger’ positioned in the playground mulch has been added to pay homage to the sites former use as a Hawthorn brick quarry.

New seating, picnic settings, bike stands and an accessible drinking fountain complement the new playground surrounds.

Visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/libraries to learn more about the technology upgrades and what’s on at Hawthorn Library or call 9278 4666.

The Hawthorn Library is buzzing this summer with a range of fun and interactive activities for all ages.

Working on your family tree? On Monday 2 December 2019, the library is running an introductory session on popular eResources Ancestry and Findmypast. The session is designed for beginners to learn how to explore millions of records online.

On Thursday 9 January 2020, you can get tips and tricks on using your computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone at the Get to Know Your Device session.

You can also join our new book group to read and discuss interesting and thought-provoking books with like-minded, literary fans. The book group will meet at the library on Thursday 13 February 2020, so mark it in your diary.

While visiting the library, take time to get familiar with the new technology making borrowing, renewing and returning books more convenient for its members.

New self-service kiosks have been installed as part of the technology upgrades. To borrow items, members

simply scan their membership card at the self-service kiosk, select renew or borrow on the touch screen and place their items on the kiosk’s scanning area.

Return chutes have been built on the outside walls of the library and they open automatically when an item or membership card is scanned, allowing the books to slide into the library one at a time.

While the technology upgrades enable members to borrow and return books without assistance, our professional staff are still on hand if assistance is needed.
