"A Found Poem" Seamus Heaney was one of the great Irish poets of our time. The Nobel laureate's work reflected the profound spiritual connection between God's creation and the Irish soul. A few years ago, Heaney was asked to contribute to a book on the spiritual lives of major figures in the arts and sciences. Heaney responded with a two-page FAX from his home in Dublin. He began by thanking the writer for her gracious invitation, and then apologized. Spirituality was the one part of his life, he replied, about which he felt he was "woefully inarticulate." On the second page he included a short poem. "Here," Heaney wrote. "Perhaps you can use it in some small fashion in your book." He titled it, "A Found Poem." Part of the poem was his memory of attending Mass in his village church: Like everybody else, I bowed my head during the consecration of the bread and wine, lifted my eyes to the raised host and raised chal-ice, believed (whatever it means) that a change occurred. I went to the altar rails and received the mystery on my tongue, returned to my place,

shut my eyes fast, made an act of thanksgiving, opened my eyes and felt time starting up again. For Heaney, the act of taking bread and wine as Je-sus did is "time starting up again." When we come to this table and do each Sunday what Jesus did the night before he died, we remember his life of selfless compassion and generous service and remind our-selves that the love of God can re-create our world, a world that is broken in so many places and scarred on so many hearts. In the sacrament of the Body and Blood of the Lord, God enables us to "start time up again" in our lives by becoming what we receive here: becoming bread blessed and broken in love for one another as Christ was broken for us, sharing to-gether the cup of every life's joys and sorrows in which God is constantly present.

The 3rd An-nual Caregiv-er Retreat at

St. Frances Cabrini will be held Sunday, June 10, from 1 - 5 p.m. The Rev. John Oesterle, Chaplain at UPMC Mercy Hospital will be the

presenter. This retreat is FREE, but registration is required to accommodate all for a light sup-per. Please join us for an afternoon of rest, relaxa-tion and refreshment of body, mind, and spirit. To

register, contact Joyce Ott at [email protected].

It’s good for all of us to get away for a bit of vacation. Unfortunately, our bills don’t take a vacation. They keep coming—week after week! So, we need your help regularly to be able to take care of them. Also, MAKE CERTAIN YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHIL-DREN KEEP CLOSE TO CHRIST this summer.

PARISH PICNIC DATE CHANGED Originally we had reserved the Four Seasons Lodge in Brady’s Run Park for Sept. 9—even though this lodge is much smaller than the regu-lar one which was unavailable in September. Now however, the Large Brady’s Run lodge has become available on July 1. This is where we had last year’s wonderful picnic. So our committee invites everyone to enjoy another great time with fellow parishioners beginning with Mass at the Bradys Run Lodge on Sunday July 1 at Noon.

May the angels lead Dorothy Frank & James Kunder into paradise; may the martyrs come to welcome them and

take them to the holy city, Jerusalem.
