YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàÉÜËá Wxá~ As we enter into the Second Week of Advent, we also celebrate a special feast day this week. Thursday, Dec. 8th is the Solemnity of Mary’s Immaculate Conception. I say that this is special not only because Our Lady is so important to the universal Church, but also because Mary of the Immaculate Conception is the patron saint of the United States, so this feast has signi icance for Catholics in America. There is always some confusion about what the Immaculate Conception actually refers to. A popular misconception (no pun intended!) is that the Immaculate Conception refers to Jesus being conceived without sin in Mary’s womb – but that is not the case! The fact that Jesus was conceived without sin is a given. Jesus could not possibly have any sin because He is God, so it would be unnecessary to refer to His conception as “immaculate.” Now, during the liturgical year we do celebrate Jesus’ conception within Mary’s womb, but that occurs on the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25th – which, if you think about it, is exactly nine months before we celebrate Jesus’ birth on December 25th. What the Immaculate Conception refers to is Maryherself being conceived without sin in the womb of her mother, St. Ann. By the gift of God’s grace, the Virgin Mary was kept free from sin from the moment of her conception, and God did this because He wanted her to be a worthy mother for His Son. So, on December 8th we celebrate Mary’s conception (just as, nine months later, we celebrate Mary’s birthday on September 8th). Because the mystery of the Immaculate Conception is such an important part of our faith, it carries the weight of a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses for theImmaculateConceptionwillbe celebratedonThursday,December8that8:30am,noonand7:00pm. Another important parish event is our upcoming AdventReconciliationService,whichwilltakeplaceonMonday,December19that7:00pm. Please note that the service will take place atSt.MariaGorettiParishinSchillerPark. As we’ve done for the past several years, our two parishes alternate hosting our two Reconciliation services. We hosted the last two for Advent and Lent, so St. Maria Goretti will host this upcoming service and the 2017 Lenten service. Taking part in the beautiful sacrament of Reconciliation is a great way to utilize this season of Advent to prepare for Christ’s coming into our hearts at Christmas. Several confessors will be available that night. And if you’ve been away from the sacrament for some time, don’t let that stop you. I’m sure I can speak for the other priest confessors when I say that we see it as a wonderful gift when someone returns to the sacrament after a long absence (read the parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-32). I hope that you will be able to join us. And don’t forget that confessions are also heard here every Saturday from 4:00-4:30pm. Finally, make plans to attend our parish’s Annual Christmas Party. It will take place at the Allegra Banquets on River Rd. in Schiller Park on Friday, December 16th. Doors open at 6:00pm. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased after Mass or at the rectory during the week. St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

Reminder Don’t forget to be working on

your Mass Hours

What We’re Learning: 1st Grade We learned that God gave us Laws called the Ten Commandments. We learned that the commandments are rules to keep us safe and peaceful and that we show our love for God by following his commandments. We learned that the Great Commandment is to love God with our whole heart and soul and secondly to love our neighbor as our selves.
