Dear WInS Community,

World Fitness Day

We encourage our students to live active lives to promote health and well-being. To this end, on

Friday 7th April the school celebrated World Fitness Day throughout the school. Our Early Years

department organized a range of activities for the students including paddle balloons, paper ball

games and swimming. In Primary, we had a focus on more traditional games, including marbles,

hop scotch and dodge ball. In our Secondary division we had students enjoying badminton, table

tennis, basketball and even bowling!

When I was school boy, I spent almost all of my recreational time riding bikes, climbing trees and

playing football. Times have changed with health and safety factors, the advent of cable TV and

the availability of tablets and computers mean this current generation are more likely to be less

physically active. I am concerned, especially with some of our overweight students, and it’s really

important that we make time for physical activities and to promote a healthy lifestyle.

A huge thank you to all the WInS staff for making this such a fun and exciting day for our children.

Student Leaders

Congratulations to the following Secondary school students that have been installed as Student

Leaders. They are: - Zhang Zhe Qi, Jeff Wong, Franky Hii, Raymond Sia, Aaron Ting, Wong Chang

Sheng, Jed, Lee, Joseph Ling, Md, Sayed, Caleb Lau, Gladys Tang, Kiing Xiao Yuan, June Lee Jing,

Christine Hii, Celine Toh Deepti Nagori and Chong Jing En.

The role of Student Leaders is many and varied, but most importantly of all, they are role models

for the rest of the school and hopefully leaders for the future also. Best of luck to them all!

On Thursday 27th April our Student Leaders were invited to attend First Aid training, led by Ting

Siao Fong, Officer in Charge of Training of Malaysian Red Crescent, Sibu District.

Furthermore, our student leaders will be attending Leadership Camp in Belawai on the 19th and

20th May. Huge thanks to our supporting teachers, Mr Albert, Mr Jimmy and Ms Evlyn for

organizing this amazing experience for our Student Leaders.

This term we intend to identify Student Leaders and Prefects from our Upper Primary

department, with the assistance and support of Ms Priscilla.

21st Century Education

Our third ICT Suite has proved particularly popular with our students. We have dedicated this

space to our recently purchased reading and writing software licenses, including Raz-Kids,

Headsprout and Writing A – Z. There are 20 MacBook stations for our students to utilize and has

clearly had a positive impact to students in Early Years, Primary and Secondary. Wi-Fi facilities

are now in place in the suite, and we are looking to extend this facility across the school in the

very near future.

Primary students enjoying our Reading Lab

Fire Drill

The health and safety of our students is paramount. This month we have performed a series of

fire evacuations so we are prepared in case of emergencies. We would be grateful if you could

discuss fire hazards and procedures at home.

We will also look at a “Lock-Down” drill as part of Health and Safety requirements before the end

of the school year.

Further and Higher Education Opportunities

Many thanks to Mr Charles for inviting representatives from Swinburne University to come and

speak to our Secondary students on Friday 21st April. With five different campuses around the

World (including, Melbourne, Kuching and London) they offer foundation and degree courses in

Science, Design, Business, Engineering, Computing and English.

Food Hygiene

Please be reminded that as part or WInS Health Education programme we encourage our

students to wash their hands before eating at school. It would be great if you could reinforce this

habit at home.

Story Telling in Upper Primary

Story telling is an art form dating back to early human civilization. Unfortunately, in this day and

age, where we have so much personal entertainment at the tips of our fingers, I fear it is not

regarded in the same esteem as it once was.

Page 5: From The Principal’s Office - April 2017 Dear WInS Community, … · 2017. 8. 23. · From The Principal’s Office - April 2017 Dear WInS Community, World Fitness Day We encourage

Many thanks to our Upper Primary English teacher Mr Darmel who has been preparing our Upper

Primary students for our very own Woodlands Story Telling competition. Having attended the

heats personally I have been blown away by some of the young story tellers that have developed

their fluency, expression, and enjoyment and enthusiasm of literature.

The Grand Final will be held on 5th May, between 9 – 11am in the Multi-purpose Hall. All parents

are welcome.

Parent Survey

Many thanks to all the parents that took the time to complete the recent Parent Survey. Your

input has been invaluable as we prepare to launch our new Mission and Vision statements that

will drive Woodlands forward. A final draft of this document will be presented to the Board of

Governors early next month.

Please note our Value of the Month for May will be Gratefulness. Please feel free to discuss with

your child in the home environment to help to reinforce their understanding and learning.

Professional Development

Please be informed, both Vice Principal Peter and I will be attending the Cambridge Leadership

Workshop in Hong Kong. We will be away 2nd – 4th May. Mr Charles (COO), Mr Bong (Head of

Secondary) and Ms Suhanti (Head of Early Years and Primary) will be holding the fort in our

absence.

Co-Curricular Activities

Whilst we always applaud parents that take an interest in their child’s development, we have

received complaints from some of our external CCA trainers that the younger Primary students

are being distracted from their classes by cajoling parents. We would be grateful if parents would

take a step back and not over-see the CCA classes in progress. Should you wish to speak to the

instructors, this can be done after the class has finished.

Volleyball Champions 2017

Hearty congratulations to the Woodlands Under 15 Boys’ Volleyball team that competed in the

interschool tournament on 23rd April. The boys won a historic match against stalwarts Tung Hua

to take the top prize.

A huge thank you to Dr Lee and Ms Tan for preparing the team with such dedication and diligence.

Field Trips

The month of May will see both our upper Primary and Upper Secondary students away on

extended excursions. Our Secondary students will be visiting KL, whilst our Primary students will

be away in Kuching. Many thanks to all the staff at Woodlands that have offered their time and

energy to organize and lead these events for our students.

Not only do such excursions provide the perfect example of putting theories and concepts into

practice and “real life” situations, it is vital that the students appreciate learning takes place

outside the classroom environment, further develops their independent skills and provides

opportunities to develop friendships with peers.

SENIM Conference Update

As announced in the February Newsletter, Woodlands International School will be hosting the

Fourth SENIM (Special Education Network in Malaysia) on November 11th and 12th 2017. We

invite all interested parents to attend, most especially if you have a child with special educational

needs. We have attracted experts to bring their experience and expertise locally, South East Asia

and beyond to the conference. Topics will include dyslexia, autism and Attention Deficit

Hyperactivity Disorder. Registration is now open and is available at the link of our Woodlands

Homepage www.woodlands.edu.my Prices have been subsidized to just Rm 50 for parents.

Register early to avoid disappointment.

Best regards,

Aubrey Groves

Page 10: From The Principal’s Office - April 2017 Dear WInS Community, … · 2017. 8. 23. · From The Principal’s Office - April 2017 Dear WInS Community, World Fitness Day We encourage

Zhang Zhe Qi, Jeff Wong, Franky Hii,

Raymond Sia, Aaron Ting, Wong Chang Sheng, Jed, Lee, Joseph Ling, Md, Sayed, Caleb Lau, Gladys Tang, Kiing Xiao Yuan, June Lee Jing, Christine Hii, Celine Toh Deepti Nagori and Chong Jing En.

Priscilla.
