Deputy Principal’s Report

Later in this term parents will have the opportunity to participate in our parent survey. This will be the Tell Them From Me survey for parents. Some parents, students and teachers are already familiar with this Tell Them From Me (TTFM) survey as we have already completed a student survey earlier this year. At this stage this TTFM survey is a heads up affair. As more information is received I will update and inform us all us all in a more appropriate manner. Have a great week. Jason Wilkins Deputy Principal

The English committee has been working hard in preparation for a primary home reading scheme. Literacy Pro, also known as Lexiles, will be introduced to students and families this term. The program is aimed at increasing students’ reading comprehension skills and to promote reading throughout Years Three – Six, whilst utilising the books that are already in our school Library. Students will sit a leveling test in the next two weeks and will be encouraged to borrow books from the library within their Lexile range and specific to their interests. They will then be able complete short comprehension quizzes on the books they have read. Teachers will be able to track student comprehension and growth through an online platform. A note explaining the program in more detail will be sent home this week.

What Scholastic says: “Literacy Pro (Lexiles) is a research-based, online assessment resource that provides teachers with evidence-based data so they are informed when making teaching/learning decisions to develop their students into suc-cessful, proficient readers. Lexile measures are based on over 30 years of research and are the most widely adopted measure of reading level and text difficulty. Educators and students use Lexile measures to select books at a level that will challenge students – not so difficult as to be frustrating, but difficult enough to encour-age reading development”. We look forward to your support in encouraging and promoting reading for our primary students. Miss Davis, Mrs Evans & Mr Hogan Literacy Pro Co-ordinators

Encouraging Reading in Years 3–6: Introducing Literacy Pro (Lexiles)

Starting today, we have our Beediators out on the playground to help maintain a safe and respectful environment for all students. The Beediators are a group of students in Year 5 who have been trained to act as teacher helpers out on the playground. If students have smaller problems on the playground e.g. handball rule issues, friends not sharing, losing hats or toys etc, they are able to go to a Beediator who will help the child(ren) solve their issue. If a problem is too big (or involved) for the Beediators to deal with e.g. injuries, physical contact etc. then the Beediators will take the students to the playground teachers on duty. Teachers will still be present on the playground. The Beediators are there to help with some smaller issues. This is great practise for our future leaders to develop skills in problem solving, negotiation and maintaining school expectations. The Beediators will be writing a weekly article for the school newsletter to keep the community up to date with how their program is progressing. So look out for “What’s the Buzz”. We look forward to following their progress. Mrs Weppler Future Leaders Co-ordinator
