YEAR OF THE ALLY—

CELEBRATING ASIAN AND SOUTH ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH

Throughout May we have been recognizing Asian and South AsianHeritage Month at Duffin’s Bay. On May 14, 1947 tthe Chinese Immigration Act was repealed in Canada and opened the way for other Asians to come to Canada to partake fully in Canadian life.

We learned about many Canadians of Asian and South Asian heritage and international individuals. some who remained in their country of birth and some of whom had moved to Canada. We learned about royalty, emperors and sultans, prime ministers, influential political and business people, famous

actors, and men who had climbed Mount Everest. Our international individuals included:

Bhumibol Adulyadej, Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi, Mahatma Gandhi, Malala Yousufzai, Emperor Hirohito, Hassanal Bolkiah, Tenzing Norgay, and Sudarshan Gautam.

We recognized notable Canadians, who immigrated to Canada and contributed to every aspect of Canadian life. The first known immigrant from Japan to Canada was Mr. Manzo Nagano and after him there were many others who followed, including people like The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Mr. David See-Chai Lam, Senator Vivienne Poy, Norman Kwong, Ruby Dhalla, Jackie Chan and Mr. Faribi.

As our community in Ajax continues to grow in diversity representing many languages, ethnicities and religious traditions, we grow in the appreciation of the privilege to live in Canada where we have been offered a tremendous opportunity to reach our full potential and participate in Canada’s civic life.

The Durham District School Board Calendar for 2016-2017 is now available on the DDSB website. Please note two important changes: We will have regular dismissal on the first day of school (September 6, 2016) and the last day before the December Break (Friday, December 23, 2016). This is a change from our tradition of early dismissal on these two dates.
