A.I.M's Project:

The Academic Improvement Meeting's (A.I.M’s) Project is tosupport students failing multiple core subjects in JuniorSecondary. This is a student self-led initiative where the studentreflects and articulates their preferred learning styles as well asidentifies their "blockers" to academic success. Students thenmeet with the HOD of Engagement to talk about how they areleading their own self-improvement to overcome their blockersand given strategies to achieve this.

Tier III – SWAG – Student Wellbeing and AcademicGrowth

Highly individualised level of support with a tailored learningprogram delivered individually or at most in a small group withintensive and explicit teaching of self-discipline, resolvingconflict, communication, decision making and understandingothers. This is explicit and individualised to each student’spersonal qualities targeting areas for them to better integrateinto school and society matched with individualised casemanagement and ongoing monitoring.

Tier II – PRIDE

Focused teaching and intervention in particular areas aligningwith our PRIDE Matrix and whole school expectations. Thisprogram supports students who require focused teaching ofour four expectations of Learn, Do our Best, Respect self andothers, and Respect our College. This intervention is targetedas early intervention and awareness to enable young people tounderstand their own individual needs and empowers them bygiving them strategies to make choices at school that will movethem back into the Tier I universal zone.

Rock N Water:

Rock and Water is a self-development program designed toenhance children’s resilience skills; monitor and identify theirreactive behaviour patterns when placed in times of stress;develop their capacity to work effectively in a group situationby analysing how relationships are strengthened and to standwith focus and determination as an individual. This workshoputilises simple body awareness exercises, boundary andcommunication exercises to cultivate intuition, self-reflectionand control.

B2M: Boys to Men:

The program acts as a support group for students and focuseson areas such as what does it mean to be a man in today’ssociety, creating and maintaining positive relationships,primary/secondary emotions, expressing primary emotions, passive and aggressive reactions, boy Vs. man psychology, positive communication and anger management strategiesincluding mindfulness practice.

G2W- Girls to Women:

The program acts as a support group for students and focuseson areas such as what does it mean to be a young lady intoday’s society, developing identity, confidence, high self-beliefand awareness, vision and personal goals for the future. Thiswill help students to respond rather than to react.

Resilience:

Resilience is a program that aims at equipping students withmultiple resilience skills as well as treating and preventinganxiety and depression. This provides user-friendly tools to beresilient during times of stress, pressure and challenge andstrategies to best care for their own physical and mental health.

NEWS FROM THE ENGAGEMENT HOD OFJUNIOR SCHOOL

The A.I.M. Project

The Academic Improvement Meetings(A.I.M.) Project is a new support programintroduced this semester to guide ourJunior Secondary students, who arecurrently struggling with components oftheir schooling, to establish goals andovercome their learning barriers. This

program is student driven and self-led with staff only keepingstudents accountable for the work and goals they have chosenthemselves.

But this doesn’t have to only be school driven and for studentsstruggling with aspects of their schooling. Here are a couple ofthings that could be done at home to maximise your studentslearning outcomes:

Student Well-being

With the current COVID situation, lockdown in week 4, andthe consistent media attention our students are faced within the current world, it is vital that we supporting their andour well-being. Here are some quick tips for supporting yourstudent through the current climate:

1. Establish a SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-orientated) goal with your studentand each of their subjects

2. Discuss what is stopping them achieving that goalalready, the “barriers” to their learning

3. Come up with 2 - 3 actions they can achieve eachweek to overcome those barriers. This could be assimple as 5 - 10 minutes of revision per subject perweek in Junior Secondary, or writing 4 sentences intheir answer instead of 2

4. Check-in with your student. Ask them once a weekor fortnight how are they going with their actions. This isn’t doing the work for them, but holding themaccountable

5. Cross those barriers off. It is very satisfying to crossoff something that has been preventing us fromachieving, so celebrate those small success

1. Get some exercise. Instead of them exercising theirthumbs on their phones and consoles, 30 minutes ofphysical activity, particularly outside, can haveenormous positive effects

2. The right amount of sleep. Our teenagers forget theyare growing and developing, and that 8 hours ofuninterrupted sleep is vital for their full developmentand well-being

3. Talk to them, let them know they can ask questions, you are here to listen to them, and it is okay to beunsure. If there are any major concerns, Kids helplineis there for any reason, anytime – 1800 55 1800
