ally is leaves so finely dissect-ed that they look almost likegreen threads coming from thestems, almost dill-like.

It may appear to be an orna-mental grass, but it is simply aperennial herbaceous plant.

Dog fennel prefers sun, butmine is near a lone sourwoodtree, so part of each day it getssome dappled shade, and it hasthrived where it is. A native ofNorth America, it grows in the

entire southeast quarter of theUnited States. It is drought tol-erant so it is well suited toxeriscaping.

Dog fennel will spread byboth seeds and rootstocks. Some literature warns that itcan grow aggressively, butmine has been in place foreight or 10 years and it has notmoved or spread. If seedlingshave ever sprung up, they like-ly fell under a lawn mower’sblades.

It is available from well-

known mail-order and onlinenurseries, and could make aninteresting statuesque state-ment in your landscape.Another vigorous vote for it:mine apparently has neverbeen touched by deer or anyother animal, though someoneregularly dines on the adjacentdaylilies.

HOLY WEEK EVENTSPound United Methodist Church, the church on the

hill overlooking Pound, will hold several special serv-ices during Holy Week. The first is Maundy Thursdayon March 24. Maundy Thursday is a time of remem-brance of Jesus celebrating Passover with his disci-ples (known as the Last Supper), the night of hisarrest.

Two important events are the focus of MaundyThursday. First, Jesus celebrated the Last Supperwith his disciples and thereby instituted the Lord’sSupper, also called Communion (Luke 22:19-20).Some Christian churches observe a specialCommunion service on Maundy Thursday in memoryof Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples. Second, Jesuswashed the disciples’ feet as an act of humility andservice, thereby setting an example that we shouldlove and serve one another in humility (John 13:3-17).Some Christian churches observe a foot-washing cer-emony on Maundy Thursday to commemorate Jesus’washing the feet of the disciples.

The word Maundy is derived from the Latin wordfor “command.” The “Maundy” in “MaundyThursday” refers to the command Jesus gave to thedisciples at the Last Supper, that they should love andserve one another. Should we observe Maundy

Thursday? The Bible neither commands nor forbids it.It is a good thing to remember the Last Supper andJesus’ sacrifice on our behalf. It is a good thing toremember the Lord’s example of humility. However,at the same time, we should avoid ritualistic obser-vances of holidays unless they are truly focused onGod and our relationship with him.

Observing a special Lord’s Supper service onMaundy Thursday/Holy Thursday in remembrance ofthe Last Supper is a good thing to do. Doing a foot-washing in remembrance of how Christ humbled him-self and washed the feet of the disciples is a powerfulreminder of how we are to live the Christian life(Philippians 2:1-11). Let’s just make sure we areobserving Maundy Thursday in a way that truly hon-ors what happened at the Last Supper. From gotques-tions.org.

The next event is a Good Friday service on March25. Both Maundy Thursday and Good Friday serviceswill be at 7 p.m. Please come join us.

The third event is Sunrise Service on Eastermorning at 7 on the lawn of the church. In caseof inclement weather, the service will be in thesanctuary. A light breakfast will be in the fellow-ship hall after the service. Again, you are mostwelcome to come.
