Seniors Connie Little, of McClure, and Forrest Duncan, both students inIntroduction to Public History at theUniversity of Virginia’s College atWise, were quickly snapped up byAmeriCorps to work this summer attwo state parks in the region.

Little and Duncan will be part ofAmericorp’s Interpretative TrailProject. Little will work at theSouthwest Virginia Museum in BigStone Gap and Duncan is headed to theBreaks Interstate Park. Professor JenMurray explained that the course isdesigned to show students the variouscareer options that are open to historymajors.

“They are doing an internship forcredit,” Murray explained. “I’ll besupervising them over the summer. The Americorp position is the addedbonus.”

Murray said AmeriCorps andVirginia work together to selectstudents to participate in the state parkpositions. Duncan and Little nabbedpositions that more than 500 studentsapplied for in the Commonwealth.

“It is a feather in the UVa-Wisecap,” Murray said.

Duncan, who is majoring in historyand theater, was hired within 24 hoursof submitting his application. Little, who is majoring in history and English, was quickly hired as well. The studentswill work 675 hours each between April

and August. They will receive nearly$4,000 for living expenses and willreceive about $2,200 after their workends to pay for education costs.

“It’s an opportunity to start mycareer in history,” Duncan, a VirginiaBeach native said. “I’m planning to goto graduate school in a year, so it’s goodto know I can get a job in somethingother than retail. Now I get to workwith the public.”

Little is also looking forward toworking at the Southwest VirginiaMuseum.

“I’m excited to be able to do history

instead of just writing about it,” Littlesaid. “I’m also excited to be outside theclassroom. It’s a different playing field.I’d love to work at the Smithsonian oneday so I’m excited to get to work at theSouthwest Virginia Museum.”

Both Duncan and Little agree thatthe Introduction to Public Historycourse paved the way for theirAmericCorps opportunities. They alsoagree that a liberal arts education hasgiven them chances to pursue a varietyof career choices.

“It has allowed us to get a job beforewe graduate,” Little said. “As

humanities majors, we always hearpeople ask us what we are going to dowith our degrees. Teaching is not theonly option for us. Professor Murrayhas taught us how to do history.”

Duncan said the course has forcedthem to examine controversial topics inhistory, which has proven enlightening.

“We’ve actually done field work,” hesaid. “We have been working inarchives in the library here. All theclasses I’ve taken here have taught meto be a better writer.”

Both agree that liberal arts havetaught them now to find answers, whichwill help them in any career choice thefuture may bring.

Little and Duncan are attending atraining session for Americorp thisweekend at Hungry Mother State Parkin Marion. They are taking varioussessions, including how to use socialmedia to promote the state parks.History Professor Tom Costa, whowalked into the room as they werediscussing the training program, pulledout his wallet and provided the studentswith some gas money for travel.

The surprised students said Costa’saction just solidifies the caringatmosphere at UVa-Wise.

Murray hopes to offer Introductionto Public History in the spring eachyear. She and the department areexploring the possibility of creating apublic history minor in the future.
