Churchill Introduces Safety From Start to Finish Churchill Downs Inc. has unveiled its safety initiativesfor the 2010 Kentucky Oaks and Derby. In March2009, the organization created Safety from Start toFinish, a comprehensive initiative to increase safety forhorses and people at all four CDI tracks. Initiatives inplace for this year=s Classics include independent, stan-dardized third-party testing of track surfaces;supertesting on all winning horses for more than 100performance-enhancing drugs for every race; the ban-ning of steroids and milkshaking, banning of unsafehorseshoes, the use of low-impact riding whips; thepresence of on-site medical personnel and equipmentand state-of-the-art equine ambulances; $1 million incatastrophic injury insurance coverage for jockeys;mandatory reporting of equine injuries to the EquineInjury Database System; and inspection of all horses byregulatory veterinarians prior to and following all races. In addition, beginning this year, CDI will fund researchon a track water truck which would use moisture sen-sors and GPS capability to determine the moisturecontent of various parts of the track and would be ableto alter the application of water in real time to improvethe consistency of the racing surface.

AL ZIR LIKELY FOR GUINEAS Godolphin=s J “TDN Rising Star” J Al Zir (Medaglia

d'Oro) looks set to appear inNewmarket's G1 2000 Guineasnext Saturday. Third in the G1 Racing Post Trophy atDoncaster in October, the darkbay will get another crack at thatrace's first and second St Nicho-las Abbey (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire})and Elusive Pimpernel (ElusiveQuality) in the mile Classic if hecontinues to please connections."Al Zir has had a good winterand is pretty straight at the mo-ment, so he's a likely contender,"racing manager Simon Crisfordsaid.

AHe certainly gives the impression he's stronger thisyear, but he doesn't really fill his frame, and I don'tthink he ever will--he's just one of those horses. He isvery well-balanced for such a tall horse, and the dipsand cambers at Newmarket aren't going to bother him.We think a mile and a quarter will be well within hiscompass, as he lengthens more than quickens."Crisford also revealed that the operation's two otherremaining entries Poet's Voice (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) andBuzzword (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) were still in the mix, although the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains at LongchampMay 16 is an alternative option for the former.

Hibaayeb for 1000... Godolphin are pointing last year's G1 Fillies' Mileheroine Hibaayeb (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) at next Sunday'sG1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, it was confirmedyesterday. Transferred from the Clive Brittain yard afterthat highlight at Ascot in September, she will take inthe mile Classic en route to the June 4 G1 Epsom Oaks, according to racing manager Simon Crisford. "She'sdone very well and the plan would be to run her in theGuineas," Crisford commented. "She's more than likelyto go a bit further in due course, but the Guineas is avery good Oaks trial, if not the best one, so we're veryhappy to let her take her chance at Newmarket."

Presvis Dodges a Bullet... While would-be rivals were unable to travel to the FarEast for Sunday=s race due to the volcanic ash from theIcelandic eruption, defending race champion Presvis(GB) (Sakhee) did not have to endure any such prob-lems en route to Hong Kong. The six-year-old, who willbe making his third start in the former British colonythis weekend, had been based in Dubai since his luck-less run in the G1 Dubai Duty Free S. Mar. 27. BREEDERS’ CUP BOARD MEETS The Breeders=Cup Board of Directors met yesterday for its regularlyscheduled April meeting. The board continued to debatepotential options for future sites of the Breeders= Cupchampionships, but no final determination was made, according to notes released after the meeting. Duringthe meeting, the board authorized a $100 (20-percent)discount for all 2010 foals nominated online to theBreeders= Cup program by Aug. 1. A report from theFinance and Audit Committee revealed that Breeders=Cup net assets declined by less than $1.1 million in2009. There was a $5-million decline in nominationsrevenue, but those losses were offset by other opera-tions revenue and investments. ADecreasing nomina-tions revenue is the result of lower bloodstock valuesand smaller foal crops driven by the larger economy andconsolidation in our industry,@ said Breeders= Cup Presi-dent and CEO Greg Avioli. AAs all organizations must dofrom time to time, we have to adapt and find ways togenerate the resources necessary to fulfill our mission.@The board also approved its 2010 budget, which in-cludes over $30 million in Breeders= Cup purse fundingand $4.25 million in additional purses for Breeders= Cupnominated horses in the U.S. and internationallythrough the Breeders= Cup Challenge and Stakes pro-grams.

AIn a year where we are projecting less than $12million in total nominations revenues, it is rewarding tobe able to provide over $30 million in purses,@ Avioliadded. AOur ability to do so is a direct result of thesuccessful expansion of the championships over thepast few years.@

JURY OUT AT NEWMARKET Mark Johnston yes-terday announced that he intends to run J “TDN Ris-ing Star” J Jukebox Jury (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) in nextSaturday's G2 Jockey Club S. at Newmarket. He disap-pointed when 15th in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic atMeydan Mar. 27, and last year's G1 Preis Von Europawinner and GI Canadian International runner-up will bidto get back on track in the mile-and-a-half contest.AJukebox Jury will run principally as a preparation forthe Coronation Cup at Epsom, because we felt that lastyear he took two or three runs to come to his best, andwe were clearly disappointed with his first run this yearin Dubai,@ Johnston explained. AThere was no physicalreason for the way he ran at Meydan, and that is whywe have looked back at 2009--he ran very badly firsttime last year as well, so possibly it is not sensible togive him such a big gap to the Coronation Cup, hencewe will run him in the Jockey Club S."
