Essential Question:What variable/s do you think

    would affect a projectiles

accuracy and power? How do you know?

    Catapults arent just used in

    games such as Angry Birds,

they have been used forcenturies for a variety of

    reasons.

    Point to Ponder

    Overview of Angry Birds

    game. App for fun and

    entertainment. A real

    world connection!

*While you are watching, look at howthe projectile is hitting or missing thetarget. Think about what makes thelaunch successful.

The ballista was operated by using tension asthe force like in a crossbow in order to hit

specific targets with accuracy and speed.

The arms were pulled back to create tension

and twist the ropes while the bowstring waspulled by people or winch. It ranged from a

small, portable design to a large, three-tondesign used for large siege warfare.

The Mangonel: The mangonel was a small

catapult that was made of an arm and cup

    mounted to a wooden frame.

    The mangonel was

    operated by a tightly

    wound rope and

needed one personto arm in order to hit

    targets from a closer

    range.

The Trebuchet: The trebuchet had a pivoting wooden

arm with a heavy weight at one end and a sling,

containing a missile such as a stone, at the other.

    12/23

    The trebuchet was

    operated by counterpoise,

    cranking an arm into

    position by men pulling

ropes or a windingmechanism, and locking

the arm as a trigger until

    released or a weight was

dropped to release theprojectile in order to cause

    large-scale destruction.

    Catapults have been

Tension vs. Torsion vs. Traction-Powered Catapults

    Tension catapults

    were more likely to

    shoot farther and

    were often portable.

    Torsion catapults

    would tighten to the

    attached rope to

    build potential

    energy, thus

    increasing the force

    and kinetic energy

    when the rope is

    released.

    Traction powered

    catapults, used

    applied force by

    people as the

    power

    source. Traction

    catapults werelever-based.

Step 1: Identify the Problem (identify that they need to hit a 2-D and 3-D

    target with power and accuracy)

Step 2: Research the Problem (background knowledge on how they were

designed in the past to be powerful and accurate)

Step 3: Develop Possible Solutions (sketch of their catapult)Step 4: Select the best possible solution (chose their materials to make their

    best sketch)

Step 5: Construct a prototype (construct their catapult)

Step 6: Test and Evaluate the Solution (Trail launches against 2 and 3-D

    targets)

Step 7: Communicate the Solution (record success of their data on paperand Animoto)

Step 8: Re-design (SCAMPER and modify to hit 2-D, 3-D and behind

    obstacles with power and accuracy)
