Philosophy of the Residence Life Program

The expressed purpose of the Residence Life Program here at Thaddeus Stevens

College of Technology is to foster self-development, good citizenship and democratic principles. These goals are accomplished through acquisition of decision-making skills on the part of the student and through emulation and promotion of values inclusive of respect to fellow students, honesty and the involvement of students in the residence hall governing structure.

The Residence Life Program also seeks to create an environment of understanding and appreciation for the values of students from diverse backgrounds. It is through

the development of this kind of sensitivity that students grow personally, which impacts directly on other program purposes of citizenship and emulation of democratic principles as set forth in the College’s mission and purpose.

The purpose of the Residence Life Journal is to provide a newsletter that

centers around the Residence Life Program. The journal is informative, educational and strives to promote the overall mission of the college within a residence life setting and to the benefit of the campus community at large.

Music Group

T he Music Group was founded at the beginning of the fall 2011 semester when a number of students approached Mrs. Schuch expressing a desire to participate in musical performance, as well as music lessons. To follow up and gauge

interest an initial e-mail was sent to the ALL STUDENTS distribution list announcing the music program. That e-mail generated a positive response from thirteen students who were interested in participating, and the music group was formed. After the basic organizational structure was put in place, we sought start-up funding from the Student Congress and received $1,000 to purchase instruments and launch the program.

These activities continued into the spring of 2012. As participation continued to increase, additional funding was provided by the Alumni Association which allowed us to purchase additional instruments and a performance quality PA system. As the program developed, discussion were initiated with other student led groups in an effort to work together to sponsor events such as open mic nights, karaoke, and talent shows. As a result, music group resources have been used across the campus by various student organizations for activities such as talent shows, student gatherings, and Home Coming festivities. Although some members of the original music group graduated in May of 2012, over half of the participants returned in the fall of 2012. New students have joined in and currently the music groups and activities are active three to five nights per week.

In addition to the music related activities, the music program has also provided volunteer opportunities for students, such as the LAUNCH Music Festival which

takes place yearly in Lancaster. In our first year of partnering with LAUNCH we had eight students volunteer and serve the community over the three day festival.

Leadership: Staff: The program is overseen by Mrs. Schuch and Mr. Met-zler. Student Congress: Hamid King is overseeing the program at the Student Congress level. Student Leadership: Jerry Parks currently volunteers as the student lead

Presidents’ Day is an American holiday celebrated on the 3rd Monday in

February. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, it is still officially called

“Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government. Traditionally celebrated on

February 22; Washington’s actual day of birth; the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was

moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more

three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. While several states still have

individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other figures, Presidents’ Day is now

popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present.

Super Bowl XLVII turned out to be an extremely exciting game. Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers, went against John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens were leading 28-6 when a power surge forced the lights to go out in the New

Orleans Superdome. Finally, when power was restored and the game began once again, the 49ers made a miraculous come back which had the entire stadium on the edge of

their seats. The viewing audience around the world watched a nail biting finish with the Ravens edging out the 49ers 34-31. This was certainly a great match up, and one of the most exciting and memorable Super Bowls in NFL History. Congrats to the Har-

baugh family and to the two great teams that played.

With love in the air this February 14th. I was reminded of this quote by Tom Hanks, Sleepless in Seattle

“It was a million tiny little things, when you added them all up; they meant we were supposed to be together…and I knew it.”
