The expressed purpose of the Residence Life Program here at Thaddeus Stevens

College of Technology is to foster self-development, good citizenship and democratic principles. These goals are accomplished through acquisition of decision-making skills on the part of the student and through emulation and promotion of values inclusive of respect to fellow students, honesty and the involvement of students in the residence hall governing structure.

The Residence Life Program also seeks to create an environment of understanding and appreciation for the values of students from diverse backgrounds. It is through the

development of this kind of sensitivity that students grow personally, which impacts directly on other program purposes of citizenship and emulation of democratic principles as set forth in the College’s mission and purpose.

The purpose of the Residence Life Journal is to provide a newsletter that

centers around the Residence Life Program. The journal is informative, educational and strives to promote the overall mission of the college within a residence life setting and to the benefit of the campus community at large.

March Facts:The name of March comes from ancient Rome, when March was the first month of the year and named Martius after Mars or Ares, the Greek god of war. In Rome, where the climate is Mediterranean, March was the first month of spring, a logical point for the beginning of the year as well as the start of the military campaign season.

1. It is was named Martius after Mars, the Roman god of war.

2. Its birth flower is the Daffodil. 3. In the USA March is National Nutrition

Month, National Peanut Month, National Women’s History Month and American Red Cross Month.

4. March is the third month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar, it was the first month in the early Roman calendar with March 1 designated as the new year.

5. The Anglo-Saxons called the month Hlyd monath which means Stormy month, or Hraed monath which means Rugged month.

6. Great Britain and her Colonies continued to use March as their beginning month until 1752.

7. March’s birthstone is aquamarine.8. March starts on the same day of the week as

November every year. 9. Four U.S. Presidents. Andrew Jackson, James

Madison, Grover Cleveland and John Tyler where born in this month.

10. When the Anglo-Saxons converted to Christianity, they held their chief season of fasting at this time the month ‘fast of lenet monet’ which in time became ‘Lent’.

Stevens Wrestler Finishes 7th at Nationals

Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Wrestler Adam Will, of McClure, finished seventh in the 157 bracket at the National Junior College Athletic Association

National Championships Saturday. It was Will's second appearance at Nationals. Will also earned All-American distinction on Friday evening, the second time he has earned those honors. Will began his tournament with a first-round bye. He

defeated Dillon Coe from North Iowa Area Community College in a 5-3 decision in the second round. He lost his next match against Jeromy Davenport from Labette

Community College in a 6-1 decision. Will bounced back with a victory against Cole Cameron, a District 19 competitor from Gloucester County Community College.

Will won by an 8-3 decision, securing his second All-American ranking. Will lost the next match against Zachary Benitz from Iowa Western Community College in a 4-2

decision. That set Will up for his pin of Irvin Buck from Niagara County Community College at the 4:15 mark of the match.

March Madness

Class GiftThe class of 2010-11, under the

leadership of Student Congress President Hamid King, voted to

make a class gift of banners to be hung when the branch campus is completed. Last year, the trend continued with the purchase of the benches. Several students have discussed the ‘look’ on campus and asked about possible upgrades. A committee on campus began to meet over a year ago to develop the Campus Facilities Master Plan. This committee includes students, administrators, and

faculty members. In this plan, site design elements (including lighting, paving, benches, fencing) are discussed. The goal with this plan is to ensure that the campus has a consistent character and cohesive look. The benches are in line with the plan and have improved the ‘look’. Some ideas for future gifts include picnic tables and additional benches in areas where students meet. These gifts help the college improve the campus environment specifically the student gathering spaces, while enhancing the visual appeal of the campus.

Last semester the counseling office started a group to train peer helpers and to provide support to students.

The group plans to resume this semester on 2nd and 4th Mondays of

each month.

Each meeting will address a specific topic, and allow time for students to discuss any current concerns. The group discussion focuses on practical solutions and strategies

that students can apply to their daily lives. I am looking for topics as the

group had requested.

D r. Bob Cooper oversees the entire Residence Life Department and

has been the Director of Residence Life here at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology for close to 20 years. He continues to teach students in Leadership Principles and has received the Student Congress Executive

Officer’s Award for his contribution and commitment to improving the lives of students. Dr. Cooper is also a veteran of the Vietnam Era, and has traveled to over 42 countries and 21 islands. As the Director of Residence Life, he strongly believes that a positive residence life experience is advantageous to the total educational experience.
