Several stories are passed around to show how the month of May was named. The most widely accepted explanation is

that it was named for Maia, the Roman goddess of spring and growth. Her name related to a Latin word that means increase

or growth.

Philosophy of the Residence Life Program

The expressed purpose of the Residence Life Program here at

Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology is to foster self-development, good citizenship and democratic principles. These goals are accomplished through acquisition of decision-making skills on the part of the student and through emulation and promotion of values inclusive of respect to fellow students, honesty and the involvement of students in the residence hall governing structure.

The Residence Life Program also seeks to create an environment of understanding and appreciation for the values of students from diverse backgrounds. It is through the

development of this kind of sensitivity that students grow personally, which impacts directly on other program purposes of citizenship and emulation of democratic principles as set forth in the College’s mission and purpose.

The purpose of the Residence Life Journal is to provide a newsletter that

centers around the Residence Life Program. The journal is informative, educational and strives to promote the overall mission of the college within a residence life setting and to the benefit of the campus community at large.

Armed Forces Day

Thank you to all that have given and served

On August 31, 1949, Louis Johnson, who was the United States’ Secretary of Defense, announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The event stemmed from the armed forces’ unification under one department – the Department of Defense. The Army, Navy and Air Force leagues adopted the newly formed day. The Marine Corps League declined to drop support for Marine Corps Day but supports Armed Forces Day too. The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on Saturday, May 20, 1950. The theme for that day was “Teamed for Defense”, which expressed the unification of all military forces under one government department. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the day was designed to expand public understanding of what type of job was performed and the role of the military in civilian life. Armed Forces Day was a day for the military to show “state-of-the-art” equipment to Americans. It was also a day to honor and acknowledge Americans in the armed forces. Parades, open houses, receptions and air shows were held at the inaugural Armed Forces Day. Armed Forces Day is still celebrated nationwide today and is part of Armed Forces Week.

Day!The earliest history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.

Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. It may be noted that ceremonies in honour of Cybele began some 250 years before Christ was born. The celebration made on the Ides of March by making offerings in the temple of Cybele lasted for three days and included parades, games and masquerades. The celebrations were notorious enough that followers of Cybele were banished from Rome.

Early Christians celebrated a Mother's Day of sorts during the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ. In England the holiday was expanded to include all mothers. It was then called Mothering Sunday.

Last semester the counseling office started a group to train peer helpers and to provide support to students.

The group plans to resume this semester on 2nd and 4th Mondays of

each month.

Each meeting will address a specific topic, and allow time for students to discuss any current concerns. The group discussion focuses on practical solutions and strategies

that students can apply to their daily lives. I am looking for topics as the

group had requested.

D r. Bob Cooper oversees the entire Residence Life

Department and has been the Director of Residence Life here at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology for close to 20 years. He continues to teach students in Leadership Principles and has received the Student Congress Executive Officer’s Award for his contribution and

commitment to improving the lives of students. Dr. Cooper is also a veteran of the Vietnam Era, and has traveled to over 42 countries and 21 islands. As the Director of Residence Life, he strongly believes that a positive residence life experience is advantageous to the total educational experience.
