IT AIN’T NOTHING FUNNY !By
George Dismukes
The Eagle Point Press wishes to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Cindy Marcum of SEA PAWS VETERINARY SERVICES, who is coming on board as our contributing veterinarian editor for the WEEKLY HEALTH TIPS section of our Pet Page.Several weeks ago, the EPP began the Pet Page not only because of our love of animals (which we most certainly do!!!), but as a forum where our pet loving readers could “photo brag” their critters. All you have to do is take a picture of yourself with your pet(s), Give us your first name, the name of your pet and the name of your city/town of residence. No, we do not need last names or addresses.
WE WILL PUBLISH YOUR PHOTO ON THE PET PAGE, FREE OF
CHARGE!

But The EPP wants more. We want the Pet Page to become a valuable information resource for you and your critters. I.e., ads pertaining to the pet industry ONLY. Provide names of valuable places where you can get your animal groomed, places where you can buy the best, most nutritious food and treats; places where you can buy the best pet supplies.
In short, we want to devote the entire pet page to pets and pet lovers. Now, we have a contributing veterinarian who will provide a “HEALTH TIP OF THE WEEK” on pet care.
Now, while we are proud and pleased to welcome Dr. Cindy Marcum of Sea Paws Veterinary Services on board as our contributing editor of the Health Tips section, it would be sinfully remiss of us if we failed to point out that Bacliff and the surrounding area is also fortunate to have Baylor Animal Hospital on Grand Avenue as one of our animal care specialists. Baylor is an EPP advertiser and has been providing exceptional, top notch veterinary services to our community for many years. We’re lucky to have them.
Please send your photo (or more than one if you wish) to:

Thank you, and enjoy!- George Dismukes

WAIT UNTIL DARK THRILLER
OPENS OCT. 28 IN DICKINSON
“Wait Until Dark,” a tense Broadway hit by Frederick Knott, opens at the Bay Area Harbour Playhouse Oct. 28 and runs thru Nov. 20.
The thriller moves from one moment of suspense to another as it builds toward an electrifying final scene.
Director Jenna Maddix selected Stacey Turner to play Susy, a wife and mother who is visually handicapped. She is deceived by a sinister con man (Daniel Partida) and his ex-convict pals (Felipe Bautista and Robert McKenzie). Turner ably portrays the blind woman who challenges the men in a deadly game of cat and mouse over a doll filled with drugs that she has and they want.
Maddix cast her young daughter, Isabella, in the play along with her husband, Jeremiah Maddix. Bill Jones, and C.T. Gomez are also in the first rate shocker.
Performances will be Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the theatre, located at 3803 Highway 3 in Dickinson.
Tickets start at $12 with discounts for military, students, senior citizens, and groups of 10 or more. They may be purchased online at Eventbrite or at the door.

Dr. Moore has a lifetime of experience working with animals. She has a lifetime of experience working with wildlife rescue organizations and as an educator. After completing her masters degree in Biology and teaching at a local college, Dr. Moore went on to veterinary school at Kansas State University. Not long after completing her degree in Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Moore moved back to her native state of Texas and has been in practice here since 2005.
Dr. Moore will be providing pet health tips in this space in the weeks to come. To schedule a house call for
your pet, please call: 281-614-9504
Yaking it up :/ There is nothing that’ll get you out of bed faster than the sound of a vomiting dog or cat. Right?! I have heard of many cases of human injury from said human racing towards the vomiting animal to get it outside. After we deal with the mess, we start asking ourselves, “what is wrong with Fluffy?”. Take your pet to your veterinarian right away if you observe any of the following: the pet is vomiting repeatedly, vomiting has gone on for more than one day, vomiting is accompanied by other symptoms like diarrhea or extreme lethargy, vomiting occurs every time the pet eats or drinks something, the pet appears to be having severe abdominal pain or the pet’s abdomen is distended.
It’s important to determine the cause of the vomiting so the appropriate treatment can be given. Your veterinarian will combine information from you, the physical exam, and possibly laboratory and other diagnostic tests to determine the cause of the vomiting. Some causes for vomiting in dogs include: Over-eating and eating too fast, Eating something indigestible or mildly toxic, Anxiety, Motion sickness, Food allergies, Reaction to certain medications, Stomach problems (e.g. gastritis, stomach ulcer, etc), Infectious diseases (e.g. canine parvovirus, distemper), Parasites, Inflammatory bowel disease, Intestinal obstructions, Liver or Kidney disease, Pancreatitis, Metabolic disease, or Cancer.
Some of the conditions listed above are quite serious and may require hospitalization. The dehydration that accompanies vomiting can be life threatening. Intravenous fluid therapy can be the most important part of the medical treatment. Giving your pet home remedies and human anti-nausea medications can have deadly results. Always consult with your veterinarian before giving any medications to your pet! Stay Pawsitive! ADOPTABLE PET(S) OF THE WEEK
OCTOBER IS ADOPT A PET MONTH
Zipper and Chewie are senior Dachshund mixes that came from a wonderful home. Sadly their mom became ill and she had to move to a home that doesn’t allow dogs. These two are friendly, potty trained, and very bonded. We are hoping to find a home for Zipper and Chewie quickly. So come out to the shelter and ask to meet these “brothers.” Zipper is 9 and Chewy is 10. We would love to see them adopted as a pair and have reduced their shared adoption fee to $75.

I have a rock... that plugs in? I’m guessing it’s a heater for a lizard or a snake or badger or some sort of land dwelling fish. If you have one of those animals and want an electric rock, let me know. I also have a bowl (i assume the land fish must get in this to keep it’s land gills wet), and a cave (too small for a badger). These items have never been tested!! I picked them up from a garage sale when i got an aquarium.

DID YOU LOSE A HAM?Perhaps a bear broke into your kitchen and stole it from the counter where it was cooling, and then discarded it because it was overly salty. Or maybe you and some other scenesters you just met were snacking on it during Moogfest but then when you woke up Monday morning next to the trash cans in Chicken Alley it was gone. I’m not sure of all the possible scenarios under which someone might lose a ham. It’s in worse shape than it was when I saw it last night, perhaps due to the rain or a random va-grant gnawing on it. The browned fat on the outside isn’t so deli-ciously crispy looking this morn-ing. It’s a bone-in ham, and it’s been eaten on some, but there’s definitely some serious meat left on it. Looks like it was pretty tasty in its day.

2016 DICKENS ON THE STRAND RETURNS
DECEMBER 2, 3 & 4 TO HISTORIC GALVESTON
ISLAND
Galveston Island, Texas, October 3, 2016
Make history at Galveston’s world-famous Victorian holidayfestival, Dickens on The Strand! Held December 2, 3 & 4, the 43rd annual festival is a holiday tradition with great family programming, including newly created events specifically for youth. This year’s festival begins Friday, December 2 with free admission to Fezziwig’s Beer Hall from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and continues with ticketed admission Saturday, December 3, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, December 4, from 12 to 6 p.m. Tickets purchased before December 2 are $13 for adults and $7 for children ages 7-12. Tickets purchased at the gate are $15 for adults and $9 for youth. Discounted tickets for GHF members are available for $10 in advance or $12 at the gate. Tickets are available online at www.dickensonthestrand.org, by calling, 409-765-7834 or at all area Randall’s stores beginning November 6. Attendees in
Victorian costume are admitted for $8.
“Each year Dickens on The Strand brings a festive spirit to the beginnings of our holidays,” states GHF Executive Director, Dwayne Jones. “Now for more than forty years, Dickens enlivens the streets and introduces thousands of visitors to the ambiance of the Victorian era. Children and adults alike can retreat back to the day of Charles Dickens and the early decades of historic Galveston. It remains one of the magical experiences in our area and in Texas.”
The annual holiday street festival, based on 19th-century Victorian London, features parades, non-stop entertainment on seven stages, strolling carolers, roving musicians, bagpipers, jugglers and a host of other entertainers. Costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations and gift items.
Two descendants of Charles Dickens will once again grace the festival as GHF welcomes Lucinda Dickens Hawksley,
g r e a t - g r e a t - g r e a t -granddaughter of Dickens, and Jane Dickens Monk, great-greatgranddaughter. Both women will be at numerous events throughout the weekend.“Spending the first weekend of December in Texas has become the highlight of my Dickensian calendar!
I’m really looking forward to returning to Dickens on the Strand this year and to seeing all the familiar faces and meeting friends again,” says Lucinda Dickens Hawksley. “I have really enjoyed seeing howmuch the festival has expanded in recent years and to taking part in so many events. I am looking forward to working on children’s events again this year, as well as to the parades and book signings. If you’re coming to Galveston this December, come and say hello to me and my cousin Jane Dickens Monk.”
Jane Dickens Monk continues, “This is my fifth year at Dickens on The Strand and I’m just as excited about it as the first time I attended. There always seems to be new events to see and do, as well as the nes that everyone loves, like the fantastic parades which I’m always thrilled to be part of. Coming from the UK, I always keep my fingers crossed for some wonderful Texas
weather for the weekend of Dickens. I look forward to seeing everyone there.”
Complimentary Book and Dickens Writing
WorkshopDickens descendant Lucinda Dickens Hawksley will lead a special writing workshop, “What It Was Like tobe a Child in Dickens’ Time”,
each day of the festival for youth ages 8 and up. Also, through a specialgrant by the Alice Taylor Gray Foundation, the first 3,000 youth that enter the festival grounds willreceive a special print edition of Charles Dickens’ 1838 “Oliver Twist”.
