Student achievement Congratulations to Jack H of 5Z who qualified for the State NSWPSSA championships at Eastern Creek 20 July. Well done Jack! Meeting with Pittwater Council Last Thursday I and three representatives of the P & C; Justin Wolfe, Yvette Bauder and John Drake, met with members of Pittwater Council, Pittwater Councilors and Departmental representatives to try and resolve issues of access and traffic congestion around the school. Council has resolved to undertake a Safety Study of the area surrounding the school as a first step in trying to find a resolution to our issues. We will be meeting again in October.

At the end of last term there were two accidents in Anana Rd, one of which involved a student at the school. While I understand that some parents to not want to toil with the traffic out the front of the school, that blind corner in Anana Rd is not safe and shouldn‟t be used as a drop off point.

Every Student, Every School The Department of Education and Communities is implementing a new approach for meeting the additional learning and support needs of students with disability in all NSW public schools through its strategy “Every Student, Every School”. A Learning and Support Framework will be developed in all NSW public schools to improve support for students with disability, wherever they enrol. A parent information session will be held on Thursday, 26 July at Regional Office Dee Why, 72 Fisher Road Dee Why. The meeting will be held in main conference room and starts at 6pm and finishes at 8pm.

P&C meeting Just a quick reminder to everyone that the next meeting of the P&C will be held on Tuesday, 31 July at 7 pm in the school staffroom.

Education Week Education Week will be held from Monday, 30 July to Friday 3 August. We are inviting parents and community members to the school on Monday, 30 July at 8:30 am. More information on the activities taking place will be next week‟s newsletter.

Until next time,

Bill Gillespie Principal

Welcome back to Term 3, 2012 and the challenge begins! This afternoon all students K-6 will bring home their Premier’s Sporting Challenge Student Log Books that they will use to record time spent engaged in physical activity and sport for the next ten week period (Weeks 1-10 inclusive). The time accrued in physical activity includes both week days and weekends so the PSC is really quite easy for many of the students at EHPS given their involvement in so many sporting pursuits! Please encourage your child/children to engage in many different forms of physical activity and/or sport during the Challenge and help them record „time‟ in their logs each day. Remember the aim of the Challenge is to get „more students, more active, more often‟. Teachers will be monitoring the challenge using a PSC class wall chart to keep each child „on track‟. This chart will be displayed in all K-6 classrooms. Good luck Elanora students with the K-2 challenge ‘go for gold’ and the Years 3-6 challenge of attaining the highest award - diamond! I‟d love to hear from any child/family participating in some „out there‟ forms of physical activity to share with others in future newsletters eg abseiling, parasailing, scuba diving- or whatever!

Learn to Lead (L2L) Report Some of the enthusiastic L2L team finally had the opportunity to run lunchtime sessions last term due to the superb weather. The Year 5 girls group organised a wonderful array of small group activities using lots of exciting colourful equipment from the Sports Storeroom. It seemed like most of the Year 1 students were involved! The culmination of the session was the parachute games. Both the leaders and Year 1 students really enjoyed this active lunchtime as captured in these photos! The Year 2 students were treated to a game of corner soccer and participation rates were also high. Keep posted for future reports from members of the L2L team.

SISA-Sports in Schools Australia SISA (Sports in Schools Australia) is an exciting new sports program that will be operating at our school this term. The Sport in Schools program will begin this week. The program is delivered by Sport in Schools Australia which provides coaches to take the students through a range of skill development which includes:

Physical education and fundamental skill topics such as – balance, coordination, hitting and striking, throwing, catching, cognitive learning;

Fitness and conditioning training including components of fitness such as – strength, power, speed, endurance, flexibility and agility and

Social skill development including cooperative learning and team building initiatives. The cost of this program is covered in your school fees.

A message from the P&C ...

WELCOME TO TERM 3 FAMILY CONTRIBUTIONS – We need your help! One of the main roles of the P & C is raising funds so that we can purchase educational equipment for our children. One way we raise money is through Family Contributions. I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to the parents who have donated so far, your support is appreciated. Unfortunately there has only been approximately $1000 banked and we are a long way from our target of $8-$10k. If every family donated $50 we would have close to $20k which would cover our GATS & STELLA Program. At this stage next year and the year after, the GATS & STELLA program will be in jeopardy if we do not raise the necessary funds of the P&C kitty. Please complete the form attached and return to the office ASAP. SAFETY OF OUR SCHOOL CHILDREN - In light of recent events, I would strongly advise that all parents be mindful of the children, conditions, and each other during school times. At last the Council, Education Department, Mr Gillespie, Mrs Bauder, Mr Drake, and myself got to sit down in one room and attempt to rectify the congestion and safety issues of our growing school. Issues raised were evacuation procedures, track upgrading, exits and entries of the school and upgrading required for entering and exiting Elanora Road. It has been decided that there will be a three month safety study conducted and then a meeting to find out what the Council and Education Dept will do regarding the issues raised. Stay Tuned Justin Wolfe P&C President

Wrapping up for now

From Jenny Cullen

As I am taking leave for Terms 3 and 4, I would like to thank you all for the support you have

given to various programs I have been involved with this year, both with individual classes as a

Science teacher and in whole school initiatives. Elanora Heights children are fortunate in so

many ways, and having such involved committed parents makes education a genuine partnership.

I look forward to working with you again in 2013.

LiveLifeWell@School has been a new 2012 initiative that has brought keen parents and staff together to help our children adopt the best habits of nutrition and activity for lifetime health. A particular thank you to the members of the parent team for their great ideas, knowledge and practical help: Kate, Martha, Kendall, Barbara, Selena and Sallie. While our parent and staff team leads, success is totally dependent on how you, the broader parent body, responds. And seeing the inviting daily range of fresh food in fruito/vego and lovingly packed lunches, we are so grateful for your clear support. Vicki

Bosler will now co-ordinate LLW@S and in third term the other key message of “Get Active” will be emphasised. Grounds and environment – Elanora is uniquely fortunate with its ample grassed playing areas and surrounding bushland filled with birds and other wildlife. It is an extraordinary privilege that a Powerful Owl has taken up residence on our grounds. These huge owls are a threatened species and May-September is their breeding season. The males roost and the females find a hollow at this time. Neighbours have heard our owl calling and a reply ringing back, so his mate seems to be nearby.

Sadly, government funds don‟t extend to the work needed to preserve this precious biodiversity in our grounds. Thank you to the parents who have shown interest in our school grounds and wildlife through their comments and offers to help. Emily Munday is a qualified bush regenerator and landscape designer, (and mother of Oscar in kindergarten), and together with Selena Griffiths, has offered to help organise working bees. Please watch for the notice and come and lend a hand.

Results for Waste-free Lunch Challenge – overall waste down by 80% Through the joint efforts of parents, staff, the canteen and our marvellously motivated students, we have slashed the waste going to the tip. Last August an audit showed that our school sent 39 kg to landfill in one day. On the last Wednesday of term, we had a total of only 8 kg for the skip – an 80% reduction! Here‟s the breakdown of Wednesday‟s landfill rubbish: From bins in classrooms, offices and the toilets: 3.5 kg – of which quite a lot was clean paper or cardboard which could have been recycled. From the playground bins: These are the figures for our entry into the Waste-free Lunch Challenge comparing two audits, showing how in just 5 weeks we have halved the landfill waste from recess and lunch.

"Total waste put in rubbish bins on Waste Free Lunch Challenge audit - then sorted into categories".

How have we done it? Training students to put rubbish in correct bin – older students have helped younger students learn the system and the above figures Effective composting: in last August‟s 39 kg of landfill waste, 26 kg was food or paper which could have been composted – now each day about 15 kg, or 5 x 20L buckets are collected by our monitors. A large number of students in Years 4, 5 and 6 have now volunteered for this daily responsibility for a number of weeks and they have the satisfaction of a practical job well done. Minimising whole food thrown away – last August we were shocked at the disturbing amount of whole food in the bins. Our regular reminders have reduced this to just a few items, but there are still whole lunches from both home and the canteen thrown away untouched each day, so do check with your child how they feel about the amount and choice of food. Increasing recycling – our container recycling bins are now often overflowing by the collection day Reduced packaging from home – many of you are sending food with little or no packaging that cannot be composted Biodegradable containers from canteen – the containers go to compost and the lids are recycled.

A GREAT JOINT EFFORT WHICH WE SHOULD ALL FEEL PROUD OF! PLEASE CONGRATULATE YOUR CHILDREN.

Many thanks,

Jenny Cullen

Edible Art

Next Tuesday, 24 July, in conjunction with ‘Fruito-Vego’, students in

Years 3-6 will showcase their Edible Art. Years 3 & 4 will design a

piece of artwork using a variety of fresh fruit and/or vegetables in the

days leading up to Tuesday. Then on Tuesday morning, students will

bring a labelled plate from home with their pre-cut pieces of fruit

and/or vegetables.

After Scripture, students will assemble their Edible Art, take photos of

this masterpiece then enjoy eating their design. Years 5 & 6, Stage 3,

students will place their pieces of fruit and/or vegetables on a large map of Australia indicating

which State or Territory they are grown. This promises to be a bright, colourful and enjoyable

event to promote healthy eating.
