A family household with one sole breadwinner who earns an annual income of £50,000 would be worse off than a household with the breadwin-ner earning £42,000. Of course, the cost of living in Birmingham is no way near as high as the cost of living in the area of London, so some of our Edgbaston residents can consider themselves lucky in that regard.

On the 25th September 2010, the start of an aca-demic year for the young ladies of St Pauls Catholic Grammar School, Nathan Smith aged 25, snuck into the building in search of a 15 year old student (Liberty Yates) who he claimed to be the love of his life. Her body was found at ex-actly 2pm when the school cleaner opened the store room door to find her body lying there on the floor with bruises around her neck. Nathan told the reception-ist that he was there to say goodbye his younger sister, giving her name and year group, before he went on holiday, because he didn’t get a chance in the morn-ing. The receptionist had asked him to wait patiently in the reception area until the current lesson was over which would have been a 15 minute wait. He sat quietly in the wait-ing area and once the

By Sogand Akrawireceptionist had left the room for a few minutes, he didn’t hesitate to go through the main doors and start his own search around the school. When he found her, he ar-gued with her and dragged her into a small, dark store room and strangled her to death. Students in nearby class-rooms said that arguing and shouting was heard but seemed to be quite far away and thought it must have been a teacher having trouble with a student. Karen Johnson (school cleaner) said: ‘I was about to start cleaning the hall-way after the girls lunch break was over and I went to the store room to get a broom. I opened the door and she was just lying there on the floor with her eyes closed. I screamed and one of the teachers came running out of the next door classroom

to see what was wrong. She too screamed when she saw little Liberty, it was the worst thing I had ever witnessed in my life.’ She cannot be named for safety reasons, however it has been confirmed that they were having a rocky but intimate relationship for 7 months. In his interview with the police he said he only wanted to patch things up with her and didn’t mean for it to go that far. He claimed that even though they had been hav-ing problems, he loved her more than anything and didn’t know what came over him at the time. Nathan Smith has been charged with murder and will face a life imprison-ment with a minimum of 25 years. As he was sexually active with an underage girl, he has been placed on the sex offenders list. The case continues.
