250ml black gram, washed
2 ½ml tumeric powder
2cm piece of ginger, chopped fine
1 sliced green chilli
Bay leaves
5ml salt
2 chopped tomatoes
125ml beaten yoghurt
Ghee
1 sliced onion
2 ½ml chilli powder
125ml cream
Lemon Juice
Soak the washed black gram for a couple of
hours. Place the turmeric, ginger, chilli, bay leaves and salt into the pot with the lentils and
cook until the lentils are cooked. Place the yoghurt and the tomatoes with the lentil
mixture and mix well. Cook the onion in some hot ghee until golden brown. Place the
chilli powder into the onion mixture and cook for 2 minutes.
Place the onions, cream and lemon juice into the lentil mixture and mix.

The disaster management centres in the Eastern and Southern Cape wereplaced on high alert over the weekend after heavy rain, strong winds and highseas lashed the coast from Cape Point to Port Elizabeth. Hundreds of houseswere flooded and residents were left temporarily displaced. One person isreported to have drowned whilst crossing a low level bridge in the Uitenhagearea.In the Rosedale area six houses were flooded, while in Botma Street in Uitenhagefive houses were also reportedly flooded. Uitenhage received a 125mm, FortBeaufort received 43mm, Grahamstown 34mm and Addo 25mm.The average level of major storage dams supplying the Nelson Mandela BayMunicipality increased by 3% after good rain fell in the city’s catchment areas.On Friday the average dam level was 31.1%. Finally after ten weeks ofdecreasing levels our dams received good rains, but we are not out of the wateryet.

Recipe Summary:Preparation Time: 1 hour
Number of Servings: 10
Cups of Fruits and Vegetables Per Person: 0.75
Ingredients:1/4 cup reduced fat margarine
2 cups chopped onion
1 rib celery
4 tsp curry powder
2 medium butternut squash (about 2 1/2 – 3 lbs) peeled, seeded, and cut into
cubes
3 medium apples—peeled, cored, and chopped
3 cups water (chicken stock or vegetable broth)
1 cup cider
Directions:In a heavy kettle, combine onions, celery, margarine and curry powder. Cover
and cook over low heat until vegetables are tender (10–15 minutes), stirring
often. Add cubed squash, chopped apples, and liquid (water, stock or broth)
and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 20–30 minutes or until squash and
apples are cooked thoroughly. Strain liquid and set aside. Puree the apple-squash
mixture with one cup of the strained liquid. Add cider and remaining liquid to
reach desired consistency. Garnish with grated apple, yogurt or low fat sour
cream.

Hoe beinvloed n’ goeie taalvermoe u kind se lewe?
Kommunikasie gaan nie net oor praat nie, maar ook oor luister, lees en skryf. Nie een van
hierdie aktiwiteite is moontlik sonder taal nie. Elke mens MOET dus taal aanleer. Om taal
aan te leer begin reeds van die geboortedag af - daardie eerste belangrike verbale
kontak met jou kind.
Jou kind se taalontwikkeling en denkvermoe, en latere skryf en lees, word bepaal deur die
gesprekke wat jy van sy babadae af met hom voer. Liefdevolle, sinvolle stimulering en
voordurende sosiale kontak en kommunikasie is dinge wat n’ pa en ma aan kind kan
verskaf sonder dat dit hulle n’ sent gaan kos. En boonop verseker jy as ouer dat jy jou kind
se taalvermoe optimaal ontwikkel. So, om te praat, te praat en nogmaals te praat oor
allerhande dinge, gevoelens en onderwerpe met jou kind van die eerste geboortedag af,
is uiters belangrik vir taalgereedheid. Jy mag dalk dink jou kind verstaan nie en reageer
nie, maar die inneem van daardie woordeskat vestig stelselmatig n’ vermoe om sinvol te
kan gesels by die kind.
n’ Goeie taalvermoe by u kind gaan soveel fasette van sy lewe positief beinvloed:
* sy selfbeeld
* sy leergierigheid
* die ontwikkeling van intellektuele potensiaal
* sy begrip van reg en verkeerd
* SY LEESVERMOE.
Die beskikbaarheid van goeie leesstof op die kind se vlak sal n’ geinteresseerdheid vir
boeke by u kind skep. Die lees van kinderstories kan nie genoeg beklemtoon word nie.

As die geld by die voordeur uitloop
dan loop die liefde by die agterdeur
uit.
Nou van gesegdes kan ons baie se maar ek dink steeds dit is in onse taal wat dit so
mooi uitegebeeld word. Geld is n’ belangrike ding en mens kan daarsonder niks doen
nie. Dis juis hierdie feit wat my op Vryheids dag, 27 April aan die dink gekry het.
Ons metro is kwansuis bankrot en dinge lyk maar donker op die horison vir wie ookal die
verkiesing gaan wen en n’ burgermeester gaan inhuldig. Die staatskoffers is leeg weens
wanbesteding, korrupsie en sommer net pleinweg diefstal. Verder het die ‘liefde’ wat ons
vir die 2010 wereld beker gehad het vinnig verdwyn toe FIFA se Seb se mense onttrek en
ons met die gebakte pere laat.
Dit is nie lank gelede nie wat ek geskryf het oor hoe wonderlik die wereld beker was en
hoe lieflik dit was om op ons eie wereld klas stadion te kon sit en my verwonder aan die
majesteit van ons nuwe Suid Afrika. Om te dink dat dit alles so gou verdwyn het toe ons
uitvind dat die metro se bestuur ons heeltemal bankrot spandeer het aan al hierdie
dinge sonder om ooit te dink aan die dag van more.
Ek is veral verstom oor die BRT of Bus Rapid ‘dissapearing’ system because of the Taxi.
Het iemand al probeer sin maak van die verkeersligte in Govan Mbeki Rylaan? En het
iemand al gemerk dat die sogenaamde ‘buslane’ net gebruik word deur die taxis en dat
die busse die verkeer ophou in die motors se baan?
Dit is hierdie tipe dinge wat ons liefde so vinnig by die deur uit laat gaan. Dinge wat ons
laat wonder of ons wonderlike land met sy hard verdiende Vryheid enige kans staan om
reg te kom en nie die pad van ons buur land te stap nie.
Kyk, dat Suid Afrika n’ beter plek is na Apartheid is n’ feit, ons het media Vryheid, finansiele
vooruitgang, internasionale sport en vele meer voorregte. Maar hierdie beteken niks as
ons deur n’ minderheid geboelie word en steeds gebuk gaan onder n’ ‘elite’ groep nie.
Die armes bly arm, die rykes word oor belas, die middel klas word kleiner en net nog een
van ons verbrokkelde drome wat ons in 1994 gehad het.
My vriende en mede republikeine; ons moet ons hard verdiende reg om te stem
verdedig. Ouers moet hulle kinders aan die oor sleep tot by die stem busse want ons het
n’ baie belangrike rol om te speel op 18 Mei hierdie jaar. As jy dit nie doen nie, is die
verdere verval van ons stad nie meer die bestuur van die metro se skuld nie. Dit sal jou
skuld wees, want jy verdien die party wat jy kry. Of jy nou vir hom/haar gestem het of nie.
Ek sien uit na 19 Mei want ek dink die metro gaan n’ surprise kry! En dit mag dalk net
wees dat die liefde saam met die geld terug na die metro kan lok en dat daar n’ nuwe
‘bruidspaar’ in die munispale kantore gaan inloop.

Strelitzia High School: Public Speaking ContestNoxolo Koko, a Grade 12 Learner at Strelitzia High school, has excelled at public speaking.
Firstly, Noxolo Koko attained a third place at the Speech and Guild Public Speaking Contest in
Port Elizabeth.
Secondly, Noxolo was placed joint first in the Regional Young Communicators Award in the
Uitenhage District and proceeded to the inter-regional competition which was held in
Grahamstown. The Young Communicators Ward is a Department of Education initiative.
Many wonderful prizes, including a voucher for Public Speaking lessons, were received by
Noxolo.
Hoerskool Despatch - Koor..
Hoërskool Despatch het dié jaar behoorlik op ‘n hoë noot begin. Ons jaarlikse koorfees
was op 18 April 2011 aangebied en was ‘n lekker spogaand vir al die kore wat
deelgeneem het. Die laerskole met hul liedjies soos Olke Bolke en New York New York
en die hoërskole met Bohemian Rhapsody en Abba-medley het ‘n aand van groot
verskeidenheid aan oud en nuut, klassiek en tradisioneel, met hul pragtige stemme
verskaf. Die skole wat deelgeneem het was Voorbereidingskool Despatch,
Laerskool Susannah Fourie, Laerskool Frans Conradie, Muir College, Westering High,
Hoërskool Nico Malan, Strelitzia, Die Brandwag en ons eie staatmakers, Hoërskool
Despatch. Dit was regtig ‘n aand vol kleur en vermaak en was deur almal terdeë geniet.
Ons koor tree nog by verskeie geleenthede op hierdie jaar naamlik: Hoërskool
Brandwag se koorfees, Last Night of the Proms onder leiding van dirigent Richard
Cock en die Oos Kaapse Filharmoniese Orkes asook ons eie Lig en Donker spogaand
waar musiek en poësie mekaar vind. Die koor, vergesel van ons eie “Steelband”
beplan ook ‘n toer gedurende September na die Wes Kaap. Daar sal ons met die
talente van die Oos Kaap gaan spog.

(aflos), Juan Muller, Mieke Stander, Dillon Korkie en Helkge Willemse.
Hoerskool Despatch - Atletiek..
Soos in die verlede het Hoerskool Despatch se atlete gewys wie dra die kroon in skole
atletiek. Met 16 atlete vertrek ons na die SA Hoerskole Atletiekbyeenkoms in die Paarl en
ons verower 6 medaljes. Week later is 11 atlete Germiston toe vir die ASA
Atletiekbyeenkoms en kom ons met 6 medaljes terug.
Lionel Drury word gekies vir die SA Jeugspan wat einde Mei in Windhoek gaan
deelneem.
