"For the moment, there is little evidence of success for foreign investments from private enterprises," the state-run Global Times stated in an opinion piece, titled "Economy a dilemma for globe- trotting Modi", barely two days after Modi concluded his official visit to China. "In the end, if any country tries to encourage investments to India, most of the programmes will be led by the government itself, with most of the private business sector skeptical about the whole idea," it said. Pointing out that though India enjoyed a favourable diplomatic climate due to its ideal geographical position, the daily in a hard- nosed assessment of the country said that "even if New Delhi keeps persuading investors how promising it is to do business in India, the current situation is far from reassuring". "Power failures happen frequently. There is a lack of decent roads and ports for transportation. Labour unrest occurs from time to time. Attracting investments against such backdrop will prove to be a major problem," it added. The article said despite the fact that Modi's government has brought in a series of measures for investors, such as establishing special economic zones, free tax zones and free trade areas, some of these efforts have come up against resistance by state govern- ments, which "hold great control over adopting policies for local economic development". Saying the US has been trying to cultivate India in its geopolitical strategy to contain China's rise, while Beijing desires to promote friendly ties with its neighbour, the article stated: "Modi has obviously realized this, that's why he started proactive international engagement soon after he assumed office." "But India has long adhered to an independent foreign policy, with no interest in being manipulated to fight in anyone's corner," the mouthpiece said. India, it said, has traditionally acted very prudently, "which can be seen from Modi embracing Putin while trying to cement closer ties with Washington at the same time".

Respect The Power: Powerline Safety AwarenessWeek urges Ontarians to be mindful of power lines

Mississauga - May 11 to 17, 2015is Powerline Safety AwarenessWeek in Ontario, a time to be re-minded of the impor tance of stay-ing clear of overhead and under-ground power lines, par ticularlywhen working, doing householdchores or having fun outside. The Electrical Safety Authority(ESA) and many of Ontario's lo-cal electrical utilities are runningpubl ic awareness programsaround the theme of 'Respect thePower.' Touching or even com-ing within a few metres of anoverhead power line can kill orseriously injure you. Yet all toooften power lines become 'out ofsight, out of mind' as people goabout dai ly act iv i t ies. ESA'sPowerl ine Safety Awarenesscampaign includes a comprehen-

sive web si te esasafe.com/powerlinesafety/, compelling socialmedia content, informational videos, and hard-hitting advertising that tar-get construction workers andhomeowners - the two groups mostfrequently involved in power line in-cidents."Tragically every year people inOntario are killed or critically injuredfrom contact with power lines andelectrical utility equipment," saidScott Saint, ESA's Chief Public SafetyOfficer. "We need everyone to recog-nize and respect the power and takesome simple, yet life-saving safetyprecautions.""As the Victoria Day long weekendapproaches, I urge all Ontarians totake a moment to increase their ownand their family's power line safetyknowledge," said David Orazietti,

Minister of Government and Con-sumer Services. "Taking the time tolearn more now can prevent a trag-edy later."Five Ways to Respect the Power1. Locate the lines. Beforestarting any outdoor job whether atwork or at home, first look up,look out and locate. Then keeptrack of where they are as youmove around so you're alwaysmindful of the power lines.2. Keep yourself and equip-ment a safe distance away. Forthe kind of power lines that con-nect a house to the poles on thestreet, keep yourself and anyequipment (ladders, pruners, tallvehicles, etc.) at least one metreaway. For the higher voltage linesthat run down streets, stay at leastthree metres away. Not only is

making contact very dangerousbut even coming close to the linecan cause the electricity to jumpor 'arc' through the air and con-tact you or your equipment.3. Never attach or drapeanything on a power line. Neverbrace a ladder against a line ornear its point of contact to a build-ing. Don't run other lines like an-tennas or cables on or near powerlines. And never grab a line forbalance when working at heights.4. Carry equipment horizon-tally. Carry ladders, pruners andother long equipment on their side, not vertically as they could con-nect or attract arcing from an over-head line.5. Plant trees away fromoverhead power lines. If your treeshave grown into or close to powerlines, contact your local utility. Donot trim trees around power linesyourself. And call before you dig toensure underground cables andother utility equipment are locatedand marked.Tips for Kids and their Parents1. Don't fly toys nearlines.Keep kites, remote control he-licopters, drones and other airbornetoys well away from powerlines.2. Electrical equipment is notsafe for play.Don't play on or near theground-mounted green transformerboxes on lawns or in parks. Neverclimb utility poles.3. Check before tree climb-ing. Never climb trees that arenear or touching powerlines. Lookcarefully for hidden powerlinescovered by branches and leaves. For more tree trimming and land-scaping tips, visit esasafe.com

TORONTO - The Leader of the Liberal Par ty of Canada, JustinTrudeau, recently issued the following statement on the sixthanniversary of the end of the Sri Lankan Civil War:"Today, we solemnly reflect on the end of the armed conflict inSri Lanka. We remember the lives shattered and lost during more thantwenty-six years of violent conflict, and the displacement of thousands ofcivilians after the war. I have met many Tamil-Canadians personally af-fected by the war. To them, I extend my deepest sympathies and support."Despite the end of the armed conflict six years ago, peace has not yet beenachieved in Sri Lanka. Thousands of civilians continue to live in makeshiftcamps, families have lost their properties to the army, those who surren-dered have not been accounted, and thousands of civilians are in prisonwithout charge or conviction. Moreover, documented reports of sexualviolence perpetuated by the Sri Lankan armed security forces continue tosurface. "The Liberal Party of Canada has been resolute in its calls for aninternational, independent investigation into alleged war crimes andcrimes against humanity committed during the armed conflict. Weawait the report of the United Nations High Commissioner for HumanRights, scheduled to be released in September, and we earnestlyhope that it will pave the path for accountability in Sri Lanka. "Onbehalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Cau-cus, I reaffirm our commitment to seeking accountability and jus-tice for the many who have suffered the terrible consequences ofthis protracted war, and to working with the international commu-nity to pursue true and lasting peace on the island."

Varanasi, (IANS) One year is along time in politics. Almost 365-days ago, the city of Kashi handedover a def in ing mandate toNarendra Modi paving his way tobecome India's prime minister. With a 'tsunami' of goodwill andexpectations, Modi defeated AAPcandidate Arvind Kejriwal withover two lakh votes and routedother political opponents. A yearlater the euphoria for Modi seemsto be missing in the city. Whiledie-hard pro-Modi followers andthe anti-Modi camp hold theirown, common residents heresays they expected a completemakeover of the city after Modi'scoronation. This, they rue, has nothappened"We were given to believe that thecity will get a never-before makeover, traff ic wil l improve, theroads will widen and a lot willhappen. But that is not the case, even after a year," says Saurabh, owner of the famous Shri RamBhandar - a 200-year-old eateryon the Mint House road. In fact,

he says, not much has changed.Avinash Rai , s 34-year-oldbanker buying 'poor ies ' and'jalebi's' for his family nods inagreement. But he credits Modiof having brough about a changein thinking towards hygiene andcleanliness."Lot may not have happened onother fronts but there has beenchange in the mindset of people,"he told IANS explaining how evenhis 5-year-old son Atharva chidesanyone found l i t ter ing in thehouse or on the roads.Swami Adyutanand, a seer sittingon Dr Rajendra Prasad Ghat onthe banks of river Ganges agrees.Pointing towards environment-fr iendly cane dustbins put atmany places on the well-lit ghats,he says the areas are now cleanlike never in the past. The seer, who earns a livelihoodby 'jajmani' or doing Hindu ritu-als for clients, like 'deep daan'and 'maha mrityunjay jaap' saysModi has succesfully inculcatedthe habi t of hygiene among

people.Vinay Kumar Sharma, an unedu-cated 20-something boy fromneighbouring Jaunpur and work-ing as a barber at Nadesar is wellinformed about the steps taken bythe prime minister. "My motherhas been able to open her bankaccount under the ' jan-dhanyojna" he says breaking into asmile while giving a head mas-sage to his client.Anand Srivastava a small-timebusinessman running a garmentshop in Laurabeer says powersituation has improved in the cityand work on roads is also un-derway a t many p laces. He,however, adds that Modi needsto deliver "faster and more" ifhad to "be in Banarasi hear ts".Amba , a f l ower se l l e r i nGudauliya near the Assi Ghat, however says that pr ice r isehas not been arrested. "Modibabu mehangayi to kam nahinkar sakin, aur to theek hai ba"(Modi has failed to check pricer ise, the rest is okay), shemumbles while dishing out facts

Chandigarh, (IANS) Punjab's ruling Shiromani Akali Dal, par ticularlyits first family the Badals, finding itself in the line of fire followingcontroversies, has taken refuge in religion. At least, that's what oppo-sition leaders are saying.Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Amarinder Singh says thatChief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his par ty, having completelyfailed on the economic and law and order fronts, have fallen back onthe 'Panthic (Sikh religious) agenda'.Amarinder's reference was to the 'Dharmik Darshan Yatra' launchedon May 6 by the Punjab government and the Shiromani GurdwaraParbandhak Committee (SGPC), which is controlled by the Akali Dal.The 'yatra' has cer tainly been able to shift the focus away from recentcontroversies towards religious matters."The choice is between the economic progress and development onone side and the Panthic agenda on the other. The Badals are knownfor raking up religion when things go against them," said Amarinder,a former chief minister of Punjab. The biggest controversy to hit Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal'sgovernment was the recent death of a teenaged Dalit girl near Mogatown. She was molested by the bus staff and pushed out of a speedingbus when she resisted. The girl died and her mother, who was alsothrown out of the bus, was seriously injured. The bus in question, and its staff, belonged to Orbit Aviation transpor tcompany which is owned by Sukhbir Singh Badal, Punjab's powerfuldeputy chief minister. The incident gave opposition par ties and others an oppor tunity to gunfor the Badal government and the Akali Dal leaders."I challenge Badal to list one single achievement he can claim creditfor. Be it wheat procurement, he has failed. Be it law and order, he hasfailed. Be it economy, he has failed. Be it industry, he has failed. Be itagriculture, he has failed," Amarinder said while listing the failures ofthe chief minister and his government.Congress leaders like Pratap Singh Bajwa and Sukhpal Singh Khairahave questioned how the businesses owned by the Badal family havethrived and prospered by leaps and bounds while the state is in a debttrap. The Badal family's business interests, mostly owned by SukhbirBadal and his union minister wife Harsimrat Badal, are in transpor t,aviation, hotels and hospitality, agriculture, infrastructure, housingand media."The Moga incident was a shocking example of how law and ordersituation has crumbled. Your (Badals') moral weakness flows fromthe fact that your family business and vested interests dominate yourpolitics and governance, and are in clash with each other," Bajwapointed out.Opposition leaders also question Sukhbir Badal on his oft repeatedclaims of Punjab being a power surplus state and his dream ofexpor ting power to neighbouring Pakistan. They point out that allareas in Punjab suffer power cuts running into eight hours andmore daily. Undeterred by the criticism, the Badals have goneahead with the religious programme on a Rs.2.25-crore vehiclespecially designed by car designer 'DC' (Dilip Chhabria), carry-ing the relics of three Sikh gurus all across Punjab for people tohave a closer 'darshan' and pay obeisance to."It is providing an oppor tunity to the people to have a glimpse ofthe holy relics of Guru Sahib and also propagating Sikh ethos of

fighting against tyranny, oppression and injustice," Chief MinisterBadal said. His son, Sukhbir Badal, who is the Akali Dal president, went a stepfurther. "The yatra would be taken to different states with help of DelhiSikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and other organisations. TheDharmik Darshan Yatra would visit par ts of Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryanaand Uttar Pradesh," Sukhbir Badal said.Even Akal Takht (highest temporal seat of Sikh religion) Jathedar(chief) Gurbachan Singh said: "This sacred yatra which has givena rare oppor tunity to Sangat (people/devotees) to have a glimpseof the holy relics of Sikh Gurus for the first time."Close aides of the Badals say that the yatra was planned monthsin advance and the opposition charge was baseless. The relics of the Sikh gurus, including their clothes and weapons, are being taken around Punjab. Relics of sixth guru HargobindSingh, ninth guru Tegh Bahadur, and tenth guru Gobind Singh arebeing carried. The tour will culminate at Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahibin Anandpur Sahib town May 20.The holy relics of tenth Sikh master, Guru Gobind Singh, includethree swords, a set of hair with comb, one turban, one chola (robe),one whip, one bunch of five arrows, one 'Siri Sahib' (small threeinch kirpan), one spear with wood, one small plain steel spear, one big sword and one sword with the word 'Sat Sri Akal Guru TegBahadur' the 1713 Samvat (1656) inscribed on the blade.Of par ticular interest to the devotees and scholars is one manu-script written in Guru Gobind Singhi's own hand.

New Delhi, (IANS) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal onSunday attacked the Narendra Modi government over the rowrelated to a top Delhi official, saying her appointment was meantto trip his government. Addressing thousands of auto-rickshawdrivers here, Kerjriwal touched upon the controversy involvingchief secretary in-charge Shakuntala Gamlin but didn't take hername. Gamlin's appointment by Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung hascome under scathing attack from the AAP leader. Jung hasrefused back off, and the central government has accusedKejriwal of character assassinating the official. "We opposedSecretary's (Gamlin) appointment but the Narendra Modi-led BJPgovernment made her the acting chief secretary of Delhi," hesaid. "The Modi government wants to fail us."Kejriwal accused the officer of siding with power distributioncompanies. He said when his Aam Aadmi Party formed agovernment in Delhi in February, a power department secretaryasked the power minister to sign a paper which she claimed tobe a comfort letter for a loan being taken by the power compa-nies from banks. "When our minister looked into it, he found outthe paper was not a comfort letter but a guarantee towardsRs.11,000 crore loan being taken by Delhi power companies,"Kejriwal said."That secretary had come to get that guarantee paper signed forthe loan. She wanted us to back the power companies andburden the common man. It was the wisdom of our minister thathe did not sign that guarantee paper. Otherwise, if the powercompanies had failed to repay the loan, the residents of Delhiwould have to bear the burden as the electricity tariff would haveincreased two-to-three times," he added. Jung on May 15 gaveGamlin the additional charge of chief secretary of Delhi sinceincumbent Chief Secretary K.K. Safe, Habitable or Smart? India's100 Smart Cities must be all threeEach time there is a mention of Smar t Cities in India, I get con-cerned about the safety of women because there is a surfeit ofnews stemming from the vulnerability of women in our cities. Afew incidents that shook India recently, include:* A police officer attacks an allegedly errant scooter-riding womanwith a brick in India's capital.* A 13-year-old girl pushed off a moving bus in Moga in Punjabalong with her mother after they resisted molestation attempts.* A young girl walking back home in Ludhiana is raped on Inter-national Women's Day, March 8.These incidents paint the picture of cities unsafe for women andchildren on foot, in own vehicles or while using public transpor t.From unsafe to unhealthy cities, India attracts attention. A recentUN study noted that the highest concentration of PM (par ticulatematter) 2.5 is in Indian cities. These tiny airborne par ticulatescan increase the risk of heart disease and respiratory ailments. The PM 2.5 levels in the national capital New Delhi are so highthat breathing the air for only a few hours can have an irrevers-ible health impact. These upsetting repor ts bring out the need for safer and morehabitable cities before India builds 100 Smar t Cities. Even thoughproponents of Smar t Cities may argue that the choice is not be-tween safe and habitable versus Smar t Cities, the governmentclearly needs to take demonstrative action to instill confidenceamong women in India to restore a sense of safety.

New Delhi, (IANS) Ranbir Kapoor-starrer "Bombay Velvet" has failedto displace Deepika Padukone's simple, subtle and meaningful act asa dutiful daughter in "Piku", box office figures suggest."A colossal flop", "a debacle", "a disaster" are some of the verdicts byfilm trade analysts on Anurag Kashyap's high-budget drama "BombayVelvet", which is set in the Bombay of the 1960s and about a man whowants to make it big in life at any cost. The film has earned a little over Rs.16 crore in its opening weekend.Released on May 15, the film, which also stars Anushka Sharma andhas marked the acting debut of Karan Johar, only managed to mintRs.5.20 crore on its opening day and Rs.5.10 crore and Rs.5.80 croreon Saturday and Sunday respectively. Its weekend total amounts to Rs.16.10 crore, according to trade expertTaran Adarsh, who on Twitter called the film a "debacle"."It's very bad. 'Bombay Velvet' earned just 16.25 crore. That shouldhave been the day 1 collection instead of the weekend collection,"trade analyst Komal Nahta told IANS."But you can't compare 'Bombay Velvet' to other films because of its

budget of Rs.108 crore. With that amount, it should have collectedRs.15 crore on day 1. The film is a colossal flop," he added.Another film expert, Vinod Mirani said "'Bombay Velvet' is a disaster".However, Kashyap has no regrets that the audience is not finding aconnect with his film, which has been his dream project since nineyears."A lot of people do not connect with it and a small number of peopledid... Maybe our experimenting with the narrative didn't work for mostbut I firmly believe in the film," he posted on his Facebook page. The one film which has continued its success story is Shoojit Sircar'sslice-of-life enter tainer "Piku", which has Amitabh Bachchan, IrrfanKhan and Deepika telling an endearing family tale through their lovablecharacters."Piku" is running successfully at the cinemas and has minted Rs.14.60crore in its second weekend, which takes its total collection to Rs.56.02crore. DIRECTOR: ANURAG KASHYAP

RATING: ***

Presented in a dark, moody and stylish manner, "Bombay Velvet" is acomplex tale of city politics, ambition, greed and love. But on the faceof it, it is a period story of a gangster -- in sin-city Bombay -- whowants to be "a big shot" someday. The narration rolls off sometime in 1949, two years after India be-came independent, when little orphan Balraj lands up at the docks ofBombay. Soon he befriends Chiman, a petty thief and is sucked intothe underbelly of the city.Over a period of time, Balraj becomes street-smar t. He soon gradu-ates to being a street boxer who also indulges in petty crime. Starvedof love and a sense of belonging, his only aim in life is to make it big.Balraj's chance encounter with the dubious media baron and entre-preneur Kaizad Khambatta has him baptised as "Johnny". SeeingJohnny as an enthusiastic oppor tunist, Khambatta offers him an open-ing of a lifetime -- to manage his restaurant-cum-pub, Bombay Velvet,in exchange of nefarious favours. An ever-obliging Johnny Balraj ac-cepts the offer. The plot gets complicated when Rosie, once a choir singer and now awannabe crooner, is planted in Bombay Velvet by an influential editor,Jimmy Mistry, to thwar t Khambatta's business interests.Romance brews. Egos clash. Greed and aspirations take centre stagein the backdrop of city politics. With fine characteristics borrowed from the Theatre of the Absurd,Anurag Kashyap blends two genres to create an unexpected noir film. For the uninitiated, the Absurd genre, typically represents human ex-istence as nonsensical and often chaotic. Absurdist works rarely fol-low a clear plot, and what actions occur, serve only to heighten thesense that characters are mere victims of arbitrary forces beyondtheir control. Dialogues are often redundant. The setting and passageof time within the tale is unclear and characters struggle to under-stand their world.

Here too the screenplay is complex and convoluted. With nothingmuch happening in terms of the story, the pace tor turously drags inthe first half, but picks up momentum in the latter par t of the film. Theonly thing that keeps you hooked is the brilliant production quality andthe performances of the cast.Ranbir Kapoor with his snazzy hairstyle and charming persona effor t-lessly gets into the skin of Johnny Balraj. Similarly, Anushka Sharmaessays the par t of Rosie Noronha with natural ease. Together, theymake a wonderful pair. Unfor tunately, the script only skims throughtheir romance and hence you don't feel strongly about them.Karan Johar, making his acting debut in this film as the shady KaizadKhambatta, is good. He gives a fairly composed and restrained per-formance but, in the overall scheme of things, he is never intimidat-ing.The few characters who shine are Satyadeep Mishra as Chiman, whoplays Johnny Balraj's friend and accomplice; Manish Chaudhary asJimmy Mistry, the Editor, and Siddhar tha Basu as Romi Patel, a shrewdpolitician.Kay Kay Menon, as the ambiguous, investigating police officer, andVivaan Shah, as Johnny's driver, are wasted. What peps these characters in this period saga are the costumes andtheir hairstyles. These are so reminiscent of the time and help intranspor ting the audience to that era.Visually, with sepia tone frames and minute detailing of the sets, theera is well-captured. The streets, the tram lines, the over-crowdedchawls, the telephone instruments and the dock yard transpor ts youto Bombay, which is now lost to modernisation. The background score along with the music matches the tempo of thenarration, but with most of the songs having the same style and beat, the overall effect is monotonous and boring. By and large, "BombayVelvet" excels in its genre, but fails to leave an impact.

Mumbai, (IANS) A timely half-century by opener Lendl Simmons andsome quality bowling helped Mumbai Indians secure a place in theIndian Premier League (IPL) 2015 final with a 25-run victory overChennai Super Kings (CSK) in the qualifier 1 at the Wankhede Sta-dium here on Tuesday.Simmons rose to the occasion as he scored 65 off 51 balls, whichwas followed by Kieron Pollard's 17-ball 41 that helped Mumbai posta challenging 187/6.In reply, Chennai lost wickets at regular intervals and were all out for162 in 19 overs. With this win, Mumbai entered the tournament's final which will beplayed at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on May 24.Chennai will get a second chance to make it to the final. They will face

the winner of the eliminator to be played on Wednesday betweenRajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, in the secondqualifier in Ranchi on May 22.Lasith Malinga (3/23), Harbhajan Singh (2/26) and R. Vinay Kumar(2/26) were the pick of the Mumbai bowlers.Chasing 188 to win, CSK got off to the worst possible star t losingopener Dwayne Smith without scoring off the four th ball of the firstover. A full toss from pacer Lasith Malinga hit straight into Smith'sfront pad which made it easy for the umpire to give the batsman out.Incoming batsman Faf du Plessis looked in fine form right from thestar t. The South African along with opener Michael Hussey didn't letthe early wicket affect their scoring. With a couple of boundaries andsixes, CSK reached 46 in 5 overs.

But the very first ball of the sixth over brought the brakes in Chennai'sscoring as bowler Vinay Kumar got the vital wicket of Hussey (16).CSK were 46/2 in 5.1 overs then.Suresh Raina and du Plessis took it from there to help the team reacha score of 86/2 in 10 overs. But the over that followed saw the match swinging in the home side'sfavour as Harbhajan Singh got rid of Raina (25) and skipper M.S.Dhoni (0) in successive deliveries to help Mumbai stay in the hunt.Mumbai bowlers kept the bowling tight, making it difficult for thevisitors to score.Set batsman du Plessis (45 off 34 balls), looking to up the scoringrate, depar ted in the 14th over off the bowling of Jagadeesha Suchith. It wasn't over yet. Dwayne Bravo (20), Ravindra Jadeja (19), PawanNegi (3) all fell thereafter.Earlier, opting to bat, Mumbai got off to a modest star t with openersLendl Simmons and Par thiv Patel taking their time to get settled in thefirst four overs, scoring just 22.Simmons broke the shackles in the fifth over as spinner RavichandranAshwin was hit for two sixes. Thir teen runs were scored of the over. The over of Ashwin set the momentum for the home side as both theopeners kept on striking the ball sweetly to all par ts of the park thusbringing up the team's 50 in 6.2 overs.Simmons, who is Mumbai's leading run-scorer in the ongoing sea-son, once again proved his worth as he made a mockery of the bowl-ing, thus bringing up his half-century off just 38 balls. The West Indian also became the third batsman after Sachin Tendulkarand J.P. Duminy to score five half-centuries in an IPL season forMumbai.A bowling change by skipper M.S. Dhoni worked wonders for CSK asDwayne Bravo got Par thiv (35) caught at long off. Mumbai's scorewas 90/1 in 10.4 overs.Simmons (65; 51b, 3x4, 5x6) who was looking good for a big score fellsoon after in the 14th over off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja.Incoming batsmen, skipper Rohit Sharma (19), Hardik Pandya (1),Ambati Rayudu (10) too went back to the pavilion in space of fourovers. Kieron Pollard (41; 17b, 1x4, 5x6) chipped in with a late cameoto help Mumbai reach a challenging score.

Hyderabad, (IANS) Mumbai Indians produced a clinical bowling dis-play to brush aside the might of Sunrisers Hyderabad, winning bynine wickets in a group stage match to advance to the play-off stageof the Indian Premier League (IPL) here on Sunday.Mumbai clinched the second spot in the standings with 16 points afterthe group stage with a superior run-rate, joining leaders Chennai Su-per Kings (18 from 14 matches), ahead of third-placed Royal Chal-lengers Bangalore (16) and four-positioned Rajasthan Royals (16).Mumbai made their task easier at the Rajiv Gandhi International Sta-dium in a vir tual knockout match when they bowled out Sunrisers fora mere 113 runs. And then they had no problems in chasing down the small total, withtheir openers making shor t work of the task.West Indian Lendl Simmons (48) and Par thiv Patel (51 not out) showedcommendable understanding, mixing caution with aggression, to puttogether a solid 106-run opening stand that snuffed out any hopesHyderabad might have harboured to make a match out of it aftergetting shot out at 113.Earlier, a superb bowling display from Mumbai Indians enabled themto bowl out Sunrisers Hyderabad for a paltry total of 113 runs.Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner chose to bat. But theirplans of capitalising on a pitch that was full of runs boomerangedspectacularly as they ran into trouble from the very first over of theirinnings.Shikhar Dhawan, one of their batting mainstays depar ted after just 1run, getting bowled by Sri Lankan pacer of the last ball of the firstover, putting an end to his opening par tnership with skipper DavidWarner (6) that has been SRH's key to big totals in the tournament. But that was just the beginning of what was a miserable batting per-formance as they lost their skipper on the very next delivery, caughtby West Indian Kieron Pollard off a Mitchell McClenaghan delivery. With their two best batsmen back in the hut, there was no way out forSRH who succumbed to the pressure losing wickets at regular inter-vals.Credit must be given to the entire Mumbai bowling line-up who deliv-ered in unison, keeping up the pressure on SRH batsmen.

They bowled a probing line and length and swiftly reduced SRH to 51for five inside 10 overs with Hyderabad's other two dependable for-eign impor ts, England's Eoin MOrgan (9) and Australia's MoisesHenriques (11) also back in the pavilion. That broke the backbone of SRH's batting. Any Hyderabad's hopes ofposting a strong total went up in smoke and they stomped andstumbled to 113.Mumbai's opening pacers Malinga (4/17) and McClenaghan (3/16)were spectacular. They bowled in tandem and struck crucial blows totheir opponents.Their good work was carried on by the slower bowlers, spearheadedby Harbhajan Singh (3/18).

RCB book IPL playoff berthBengaluru, (IANS) Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) confirmedtheir berth in the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs after theirconcluding league match against Delhi Daredevils was abandonedmidway due to heavy showers here on Sunday. The no-result gave RCB one point which took their tally to 16 andinto second place behind Chennai Super Kings (CSK) while Dare-devils ended their disappointing league campaign on 11 points.Batting first, Daredevils made 187/5 on the back of half-centuriesby opener Quinton de Kock (70, 39b, 9x4, 3x6) and skipper JPDuminy (67 not out, 43b, 4x4, 3x6).After a brief delay due to a drizzle, RCB began their reply butshowers that grew in intensity as time went by, forced the playersindoors after just 1.2 overs with the home team on two for no loss. With the rains not abating, the umpires eventually called off thegame. Earlier, the Daredevils innings looked far from convincingdespite the big total that was possible mainly due to de Kock andDuminy, who chanced their arms with some success but receivedlittle suppor t at the other end. Young Shreyas Iyer (20) and deKock provided a solid star t for Daredevils with a 55-run stand forthe first wicket before the former depar ted, caught at point.

We want India-Pakistancricket series: Sportsminister SonowalKolkata, (IANS) The government on Sunday said itwas in favour of a proposed India-Pakistan bilat-eral cricket series that would promote friendshipbetween the neighbouring nations."As a spor ts minister, my main objective is to pro-mote sports. For better friendship and relationship,we want the series to take place," union Ministerfor Youth Affairs and Spor ts Sarbananda Sonowaltold media persons on the sidelines of a functionhere. However, he said a lot of issues remain to beaddressed before the series could become a real-ity. "There are a lot of issues to be addressed, that'sa different par t." Pakistan Cricket Board chiefShahryar Khan recently flew into the city and methis Indian counterpar t Jagmohan Dalmiya on theissue. Khan later said Pakistan was ready to hostthe bilateral series comprising three Tests, fiveODIs and two T20 games in the United Arab Emir-ates in December. Board of Control for Cricket inIndia (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya has alsoexuded confidence about the restar t of the bilateralengagements, but said the suppor t of the govern-ment was a must for the plans to be implemented. The two neighbours, whose relations have oftenturned bitter, played their previous bilateral seriesin December-January 2012-13 when Pakistantoured India. Sonowal also said the governmentwas doing everything to help out the Indian medalprospects ahead of the Rio Olympics next year."We're targeting more and more medals from theRio Olympics, that's the prime objective. For thispurpose, we're helping out the best possible medalprospective athletes. We are all suppor ting, what-ever needs to be done we're all doing."

Messi leads Barcelona toSpanish soccer titleMadrid, (IANS/EFE) Argentine soccer phenomenonLionel Messi was the decisive force in helpingBarcelona clinch its 23rd Spanish soccer Liga title, sinking the only goal of the away match againstAtletico de Madrid on Sunday at Vicente Calderonstadium.Messi found the twine in the 65th minute off a lovelycombination with Pedro Rodriguez - mathemati-cally assuring Barca the title - and he has nowracked up a total of 54 goals this season, 41against La Liga opponents.Atletico, meanwhile, suffered its second homedefeat during the championship, and its first in itslast 14 Liga matches. To come in third this sea-son, it must now garner at least a tie in Granada inits last match. The squad coached by Luis Enrique- who clinched the top spot in La Liga with a onegame yet to go - can now zero in on the Champi-ons League and Copa del Rey finals as it tries forall three titles. "I think of everyone who has formedpar t of the club from the star t of the season, andabove all our fans," said Luis Enrique.

London, (IANS) Carlo Ancelotti will not be manager of Real Madridnext season and Zinedine Zidane could be his replacement, feelsLiverpool legend Jamie Carragher. The club is poised to go withoutany silverware this season after being dumped out of the ChampionsLeague by Juventus and falling four points behind Barcelona in LaLiga with two games remaining.Even Ancelotti himself admitted he does "not know if I will still behere" next season and Carragher feels Zidane, currently manager ofthe club's B team Real Madrid Castilla, is a natural replacement.Asked whether Ancelotti should fear for his job, Carragher was quoted

as saying by dailymail.co.uk on Wednesday: "You know how this clubworks, he knows that better than anyone. He's one of the world's topmanagers, won the Champions League three times, but there's noway he will be here next year."I'm sure there'll be a change," Carragher, who is a football exper twith Sky Spor ts, said. Ancelotti won the Champions League and Copadel Rey double last season, but club president Florentino Perez canbe unforgiving when it comes to a trophyless year. Zidane took chargeof the club's reserve squad in June 2014, and narrowly missed out onpromotion from Spain's third tier, Segunda B, recently.

Yet Carragher, who represented England in 38 matches, would not besurprised if Zidane is asked to step up sooner rather than later. "There'stalk of Zidane, who is in charge of the reserve team. You wouldn't besurprised at Real Madrid if that happened in the next couple of days, and they give someone else the job for the last three or four games tosee how Zidane went," former defender Carragher continued. "That'sthe nature of Real Madrid. They hire and fire managers. We've seenpeople fired when they've won the Champions League so the fact that(Ancelotti) is going to play a season without winning a trophy, there'sno chance of him being here next year."

Bayern suffered a3-5 aggregate defeat despite winning 3-2 at their home ground, the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, to bowout of the Champions League at the semi-final stage.
