However, a portion of them were "overqualified" during this period-that is, work- ing in occupations requiring lower levels of education. Two studies released recently Insights on Canadian Society provide some highlights on the evolution of the occupational characteristics of young men and women in Canada between 1991 and 2011, a period during which the educational attainment of young people rose substantially. The first study examines whether today's young graduates and non-graduates aged 25 to 34 are working in the same occupations as their counterparts were 20 years ago. The second study examines changes in the proportion of those who are "overqualified" for their job, with a focus on university graduates. Young workers are more likely to be in higher skilled occupations Between 1991 and 2011, the proportion of young workers aged 25 to 34 with a university degree rose from 19% to 40% among women and from 17% to 27% among men. Over the same period, the proportion of young male and female workers in professional occupations-those that require a university education-also rose, growing from 18% to 28% among women and from 13% to 18% among men. Correspondingly, the proportion of young men and women who worked in occupations requiring a high school education or less was down, declining from 48% to 36% among women and from 42% to 33% among men. Other workers were in management occupations (8% of women and 11% of men) and in occupations requiring a college degree or an apprenticeship (28% of women and 38% of men). These proportions did not vary substantially over the period. TOP THREE OCCUPATIONS AMONG FEMALE GRADUATES WERE THE SAME IN 1991 AND IN 2011 In 1991 and 2011, the three most common occupations held by young women with a university degree were registered nurses, elementary school and kindergarten teachers, and secondary school teachers. These occupations accounted for more than 20% of all female univer- sity graduates in both years. A ccording to a recent report, an investment of about $11 billion has come in India in wake of speculations that Narendra Modi will be the next Prime Minister of India. This was revealed by Pankaj Monga a Financial Expert on Southasian Pulse Radio . Yudhvir also mentioned how the new Government in India will have to deal with the rising Debt Payments. India had to pay back $172 billion by March 31, 2014. The corresponding figure in March 2008 - before the global financial meltdown that year - was just $54.7 billion. India has accumulated a huge short-term debt with residual maturity of one year after 2008. The figure has gone up over three times largely because this period also coincided with the unprecedented widening of the current account deficit from roughly 2.5 percent in 2008-09 to nearly 5 per cent in 2012-13. Much of this expanded CAD has been funded by debt flows. This may turn into a vicious cycle.More pertinently, short-term debt maturing within a year is now nearly 60 per cent of India's total foreign exchange reserves. In March 2008, it was only 17 per cent of total forex reserves. This shows the actual increase in the country's repayment vulnerability since 2008. Big B to playparalysed chessgrandmaster in BejoyNambiar's nextAmitabh Bachchan hasn’t shied awayfrom playing challenging roles in thepast. He’s por trayed characters suchas 12-year-old progeria-struck Auro inPaa (2009) or the teacher of a blind-mute woman in Sanjay LeelaBhansali’s Black (2005), with greatversatility. So it comes as no surprisethat Bachchan has agreed to play anotherdifferent role — the star plays a paralysedchess grandmaster in director BejoyNambiar’s upcoming film. The thriller, which stars Farhan Akhtar in thelead, will be produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.Sources say that Bachchan’s character inthe film will be confined to a bed as he iscompletely paralysed. He will be playing theteacher to Farhan’s character in the film. Com-menting on the development, an insider says,“After Farhan came on board, Bejoy ex-pressed his desire to have MrBachchan in it as well. And when Bejoymet Mr Bachchan with the script, heimmediately approved of the role.”

Veteran actress Waheeda Rehman, who has shared her life journey in thebook Conversations with Waheeda, was tight-lipped about her alleged re-lationship with filmmaker Guru Dutt.Asked about it at the book launchevent, she said: "I don't want to getinto it... my private life is nobody'sbusiness."Coming to her rescue, the book's au-thor Nasreen Munni Kabir said: "Wehave to respect actors' personal livesand we should not cross the line. Shehas been loved by all of us (for herwork) and that's not (her relationship)what she is known for."Fur ther asked why directors fall in lovewith their actors, Waheeda said: "Therehave to be a little bit... because thedirector thinks from the actors' pointof view. I think all the directors werein love with me."Waheeda said nobody knows why hecommited suicide."Nobody knows (why he committedsuicide)...I dont think he was in de-pression after the failure of Kagaz KePhool because soon after that he madeChaudhvin Ka Chand which was a su-per hit."Guru Dutt was found dead in his apart-ment Oct 10, 1964.

IF WE SEPARATE, WE’LL TWEET ITRANVIR SHOREY REACTS ON SPLIT RUMOURSActor Ranvir Shorey is upset with speculations that his marriage with actor Konkona SenSharma is on the rocks. The 41-year-old — known for his roles in movies such as Singh is Kinng, Bheja Fry and Khoslaka Ghosla — says that if they decide to separate, they will announce it on microblogging site,Twitter.“I can’t clarify anything if the media is printing lies! Moreover, I have a Twitter account, if I needto clarify anything, I will do it there. If we decide to separate, we’ll announce it on Twitter.”Talking about the guesswork, Ranvir says, “I used to get quite angry initially. I have to say that alot of press I get today is yellow press, and it still makes me angry. It was the media that wrote aparallel narrative of my marriage. They seem to have all the time to write about that, but not mywork,” says Ranvir.Moving on, Ranvir, currently seen on the adventure reality show, Khatron Ke Khiladi, says he isready to share screen space with his wife, provided the script suits them both. “I’m game towork with Koko (Konkona), but that’ll happen if we get a script we both like, and that’s not easy,”he says. Alia Bhatt can't vote in 2014, encourages youth to cast their votes

Alia Bhatt turned 21 last month. So you’d thinkthat the Mumbai resident (the Bhatts live inJuhu) would be casting her vote in the upcom-ing Lok Sabha elections. But the young actor won’t actually be able tovote, come April 24. She is a British passpor tholder, and, therefore, does not have Indiancitizenship."Unfor tunately, I can’t vote because I have aBritish passpor t," Alia says. She even men-tioned the same thing in passing at a recentevent in the city. But she also tells us, "I ampast the date (to get the official documents forvoting) this time around, but I will try and getmy voting card the next time (elections) once Iget my dual citizenship (sic; India does notactually allow dual citizenship)."But even though she can’t vote herself, shesays she’s trying to do her bit to motivateothers to do so: "I’ve been encouraging theyouth to go out there and vote, because, I feel,if there’s any change, it will happen throughthem. If I’m not mistaken, there are 12 crorenew, young voters this time. Even if half ofthose 12 crore go out and do their bit, it willmake a difference," she says.Ask the actor’s father, Mahesh Bhatt, aboutthis, and he explains that "Alia’s mother, Soni(Razdan, Birmingham-born), is of Britishorigin. So, Alia automatically acquired thecitizenship of that country… As Alia has said, she is trying to fulfil the formalities and gothrough processes in order to get the rights toexercise her franchise (in the next elections)."

World T20: India, Yuvrajsoak in the hurt

MUMBAI: "If you can meet with triumph and disaster, and treatthose two impostors just the same...." Rudyard Kipling's poemhas a resonance with sportsmen, who try very hard not to payheed to the emotions surrounding victory and defeat. Some-times, though, the media and fans don't make this possible, especially if you're an Indian cricketer. The MS Dhoni-led side arrived back home a day after their six-wicket loss in the World T20 final to Sri Lanka, and on touchingdown in Mumbai they would have immediately felt the differ-ence between "those two impostors". Rohit Sharma, skipperMS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, who were par t of the side that hadtriumphed in the inaugural edition in 2007 and received atumultuous welcome on a rainy September 26, would havefelt it all the more.On Monday, April 7, nearly seven years later, there was norain and no celebration as the players boarded flight 9w0975from Dhaka and landed in Mumbai at 4.05 pm.There was the usual demand for selfies from fans as theplayers waited to pick up their coffins and baggage. ShikharDhawan was the most sought af ter. R Ashwin too was quitein demand. Both did their best not to lose their cool, eventhough a few requests got a bit imper tinent.A few fans rushed to the area where Yuvraj Singh was wait-ing for his luggage to arrive. Keeping him company wasVarun Aaron. The former, who is being villified in the coun-try for having an off day in the final, was surrounded by agroup of youngsters with smar t phones and tabs. On a dayhe would have liked to be lef t alone, Yuvraj was subjectedto stifling public scrutiny. Seeing the commotion a coupleof cops and security men arrived and instead of stoppingthe fans from hassling the players, they too joined in thephoto-op.The southpaw, who scored 11 in 21 balls in the final, will-ingly par ticipated in the melee even though a couple ofyoungsters standing a few metres away passed a few unchari-table remarks. In the past, Yuvraj has been vocal and even physicalagainst criticism. On Monday though, he didn't pay much heed. Itseems he wanted to soak it all in and nurse the hurt.

MALAYSIA AIRLINES MH370: SEARCHERS TRY TOREGAIN CONTACT WITH PINGER SIGNALS

SYDNEY—After a month scouring vast stretches of land and oceanfor Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, search crews are focusing onregaining contact with underwater signals consistent with the miss-ing jet’s black box flight recorders that were first detected Satur-day. Like a solitary hunter stalking its prey, the Australian navalship Ocean Shield—a hand-me-down from Norway’s oil and gasindustry—continued to sweep a 7-mile strip of the southern IndianOcean on Tuesday. It is towing a U.S. Navy device nearly 2 milesbeneath the ocean surface, listening for pings from the black boxes’emergency-locator beacons. Though an aerial search for possibleplane debris continued, authorities are increasingly of the view

that the underwater search offers the best hope of pinpointing apossible crash site before the beacons stop emitting signals, ifthey haven’t already done so. “This is the most positive, definitive leadwe’ve had and we are pursuing it,” said Australian Defense Minister DavidJohnston, whose country is leading the multinational search off its remotewestern coast. “We are throwing everything at this difficult, complex task in atleast the next several days whilst we believe these two pingers involved are stillactive.” Beacons on the two flight recorders aboard the plane have an estimatedbattery life of about 30 days before they stop emitting signals. It has been morethan that since the plane vanished on March 8 on a flight from Kuala Lumpur toBeijing with 239 people on board.

This activity has re-sulted in discrete improvement ofseniors' life.Baldev moaned that though alarge number of other older adultsalso require these services, hiscentre does not have the capac-ity to cater for more but this yearthey intend to induct 10 more inthis group. The centre also takesseniors with serious mental ail-ments to hospitals for regularcheckups and provides full sup-por t to the families they belongto. Four of the centre's staff is in-volved in settlement and assistscommunity members to settle in

Mattapointed out their most success-ful program is the parenting ses-sion called Mentoring for Changethat is held every Monday whereparents are equipped with tech-niques and imparted skills to suc-cessfully deal with their kids whohave gone astray.Star ted as a pilot project, its suc-cess prompted the society to pairup south Asian high school youthat risk with university graduatesvia emails, twitter and other so-cial media engines. The thrust ofthe activity was to help them fromfalling into traps while highlight-ing their success stories. A simi-lar centre has already beenopened in Calgary and he is indiscussion with par tners to setup one in Montreal as wel l .Baldev added around 30 of hisstaff members are dealing withthe distraught families of heavydrinkers and drug addicts. MostlySouth Asian men between theages of 20 to 30, 60 and over aboveare victims of these cursed hab-its and not only suffer themselvesmental ly and physical ly butcause pain to their families aswell. Such families are in heavydebts and do not know how to getout of this vicious circle. The society helps 90% peoplefrom India and Pakistan but oth-ers in dire straits are assisted aswell. Baldev is now asking theOntario government to fund a pro-fessionally trained Tamil casemanager for mental health. Hedoes not wish to hire such as staffkeeping in view the precariousstate of mental health patients

who are a risk segment and veryhigh liabilities are at stake. Thusthe society has asked for govern-ment help so that the whole pro-cess is monitored by theministry's appointed professionaland to avoid legal challenges. Thesociety also helps new immi-grants from India and Pakistanwith social sciences degrees byoffering them coop and impar t theinvaluable Canadian experience.Baldev considers serving theSouth Asian community is aunique privilege and adopting aproactive approach the next stepis going to India, bringing twosocial sciences graduated fromPunjab University, educate them, inform them of the latest studiesin this field and help them writetheir PhD thesis. Next year he in-tends to repeat the same exercisewith a Pakistan community. Thiswill not only bestow students withthe priceless international expo-sure to help them tackle the is-sues of less for tunate but upshotpower development in these coun-tries. His long-term plan is tocreate a compassionate younggroup in community that canstrike cord with the commune, develop a culture of respect andspread cheer in society. He isthankful to the community forits whole-hear ted suppor t thathas made all the difference. At r ue ph i lan throp is t a t hear t ,Baldev's advice is to alleviatepeop le 's su f fe r ings in everyway and where money or hightech facilities do not work, just asmile or a kind gesture does thetrick.

TRAVELLING SOON?AVOID 'PHONE BILL PHOBIA'WITH THESE SIMPLE TIPS

Five simple ways to save on 'roam-ing' -- just in time for March Break

- MARC SALTZMANWhether you're travelling for work or play - or perhaps a bit of both - youno doubt want to bring your smartphone along for the ride. Not only can your pocket-sized device help keep you organized, con-nected, productive and entertained while on the go, but you've also gotbuilt-in GPS navigation, a camera and camcorder, alarm clock, pedom-eter and more.Problem is, you're probably afraid to use your phone outside of Canada- especially given the horror stories of travellers coming home to anastronomical wireless bill. You don't need to succumb to "Phone Bill Phobia," as long as you heedthese simple travelling tips:Travel add-onsBefore you leave on your trip, it pays to pick up a travel plan. Mostcarriersoffer options to purchase add-ons that will save you money on thestandard rates for voice, text and data usage while you're away. WINDMobile, for example, is the first Canadian carrier to offer unlimited data, talk and text across the U.S. -- for just $15/month. With an unlimitedplan, you have the freedom to share your entire trip with the world, without the stress of keeping track of your usage or fears of cominghome to a crazy bill.If you're not able to take advantage of a deal likethis, you can still prevent "Phone Bill Phobia" with the following sugges-tions.Disable push mail, appsWhen roaming, manually check for new email instead of having thedata pushed to your phone automatically. iPhone and Android users, forexample, can turn off "Fetch New Data." Similarly, go into your Settingsand disable pushed notifications for apps that support it -- such as livesports scores, real-time weather and news headlines --as it also eatsup data.Turn off 'Sync'On a related note, turn off the option to synchronize data and appsautomatically. Simply uncheck the "Sync" option in Settings to makethe necessary changes. Many time-sensitive apps are set to automati-cally sync using your data connection -- to constantly get new informa-tion for you -- but you can temporarily disable it or select when to sync(specific dates and times).Properly close appsMake sure you properly close apps when you're done with them -otherwise, they may still be running in the background and using updata (and your battery, too). This includes GPS-based maps/directions,social feeds, games and other apps that might stay open on your phone, though minimized. On Android, press and hold your Home button andthen swipe to the right to close apps; iPhone users can double-tap theHome button and then flick up to close each app.Consider text, IMUse text messaging (SMS) or instant messaging -- like BBM, WhatsApp,iMessage, Kik, Google Hangouts or Facebook Messenger -- opposedto making a voice call. Why? It's a lot quicker and cheaper. After all, there's a lot less "small talk" when chatting via typed words opposed toa phone call.Email tipIf you're a heavy email user, go into your email settings and choose notto download the entire email from lengthy messages. This way you canmanually tap "Get remaining message" (or a similar option) toread the entire text, if desired. Similarly, you can also choosefor attachments not to download automatically, such as alarge image.

CANADA SPEAKING MOREOR LESS FRENCH ?

IMMIGRATION ANY FACTOR ?Fifty years ago, the initial work

of the Royal Commission onBi l ingual ism and

Biculturalism laid the foundationfor what would become the Gov-ernment of Canada's policy of of-ficial bilingualism. In the yearsfollowing the commission, therate of English-French bilingual-ism in Canada increased, butseemingly reached a plateau in2001. What are the bilingualismtrends in Canada? What factorsare behind the recent slowdownin bilingualism across the coun-try?" In 2011, 17.5% of Cana-dians, or 5.8 million people, re-por ted being able to conduct aconversation in both English andFrench, up from the 12.2% re-corded 50 years earlier, in 1961." In Canada, the propor-tion of bilingual people went from17.7% to 17.5% between 2001 and2011, even though the number of

bilingual people rose continu-ously." Quebec was the onlyprovince in which the rate of bi-lingualism rose steadily between2001 and 2011-from 40.8% to42.6%. In 1961, the rate was25.5%." In the rest of Canada, therate of bilingualism went from10.3% in 2001 to 9.7% in 2011. In1961, the rate was 6.9%." Between 2001 and2011, the lack of growth in bilin-gualism outside Quebec occurredas the non Francophone immi-grant population was growing andthe propor t ion of students inFrench-as-a-second-language(FSL) programs was shrinking." In October 2012, Statis-tics Canada released languagedata from the 2011 Census, in-cluding findings on Canadians'knowledge of official languages.Although the data have been col-

lected in different ways over theyears, the Government of Canadahas been collecting data on theability to conduct a conversationin both English and French since1901. Thanks to successive cen-suses, statistics on the rate ofbilingualismNote 1 have a longhistory in Canada." In the early 1960s, newinterest in bi l ingual ism wassparked by the work of the RoyalCommission on Bilingualism andBiculturalism (also known as theLaurendeau-Dunton Commission,

named af ter i ts two co-chairs).Note 2 The work of thecommission, whose 50th anni-versary is being celebrated thisyear, led to the adoption of thefirst Official Languages Act in1969. This act gave statutory rec-ognition to Canada's linguisticduality, but stopped short of set-ting specific national objectivesfor bilingualism.Note 3" At the t ime, theLaurendeau-Dunton Commissionrecognized that af f i rmingCanada's bilingual nature did not

necessarily go hand-in-hand witha bilingual population. The focuswas instead on developing bilin-gual institutions, so that "the prin-cipal public and private institu-tions [can] provide services intwo languages to citizens, thevast majority of whom may verywell be unilingual."Note 4 Never-theless, since institutional bilin-gual ism requires a suff ic ientnumber of bil ingual people to"maintain contact between thetwo language groups," the Com-mission also had a mandate to"recommend what could be doneto enable Canadians to becomebilingual."Note 5" In Canada, the rate ofbilingualism went from 12.2% in1961 to 13.4% in 1971. It contin-ued to increase over the nextthree decades, reaching 17.7% in2001. However, in the last 10years, the rate of bilingualism inCanada's population decreasedslightly for the first time since1961, to 17.5% in 2011. Note, however, that the number of bi-l ingual people in Canada has

never stopped growing." What is the reason forthe relative stagnation of the bi-lingualism rate, when the num-ber of bilingual people in Canadais increasing?Note 6This ar ticlepresents the historical trends inbilingualism in Canada using thecensuses from 1961 to 2011. Itthen examines some key factorsthat may explain the recent sta-bil ity of the bil ingualism rate, namely second-language learn-ing and international immigration, using data from the Elementary-Secondary Educat ion Survey(ESES), censuses, and the Na-tional Household Survey (NHS)(see Data sources, methods anddefinitions)." There were 5.8 millionbil ingual people in Canada in2011" In the 2011 Census, 5.8mil l ion people nationwide re-por ted being able to conduct aconversation in both English andFrench, which corresponds to abilingualism rate of 17.5%. In1961, the percentage was 12.2%,when 2.2 million Canadians re-por ted being able to speak bothofficial languages. This increasein the number of bilingual peopleover the last 50 years (close to3.6 million people) correspondsto a growth rate of close to 160%.During th is per iod, Canada'spopulation increased by 82%,from 18.2 mi l l ion to 33.1million.Note 7" In the last few years, however, growth in the bilingual-ism rate has slowed, decreasingslightly between 2001 and 2011,af ter four decades of steadygrowth (Table 1)." However, the resul tsdiffer between provinces. In someprovinces, namely NewBrunswick, Ontario, Alber ta andBritish Columbia, the results fol-low the national trend, increas-ing between 1961 and 2001 andthen remaining stable between2001 and 2011. In other provinces, namely Mani toba andSaskatchewan, the rate of bilin-gualism did not clearly increaseor decrease between 1961 and2001, but decreased between2001 and 2011. In Newfoundland andLabrador, Prince Edward Island andNova Scotia, the rate grew steadily be-tween 1961 and 2011, but the growthwas slower between 2001 and 2011.Only in Quebec was there relativelysteady growth in the rate of bilin-gualism in each period from 1961to 2011.

Even though the number ofbilingual people-like the tota l populat ion-has not

stopped growing from one decen-nial census to the next, it has notalways grown at the same paceas the total population (Char t 1).At the beginning of the period, thebilingual population grew at amuch more rapid rate than thetotal population. For example, between 1961 and 1971, the bi-lingual population increased by30%, while the total populationgrew by 18%. In contrast, the to-tal population grew more quicklythan the bilingual population be-tween 2001 and 2011, a periodwith high levels of internationalimmigration. This trend was par ticularly pro-nounced outside Quebec. Be-tween 1961 and 1981, the growthrate of the bilingual populationwas nearly twice that of the totalpopulation. The gap graduallynarrowed over the decades thatfollowed and the trend reverseditself in the last 10 years-thegrowth rate of the total population(12%) has been twice that of thebilingual population (6%). In Que-bec, however, the growth rate ofthe bilingual population has al-ways been greater than that of thetotal population. In recent years, the dynamics ofbi l ingual ism in Quebec havetherefore differed from that in therest of Canada, as reflected in itsbilingualism rate of nearly 43%in 2011. The only other provincewith a rate greater than the na-

tional rate was New Brunswick(33%). In contrast, the threewesternmost provinces, as wellas Newfoundland and Labrador, had the lowest rates of bilingual-ism (less than 7%).In 2011, more than 80% ofCanada's bi l ingual populat ionwas living in Quebec or Ontario, although the two provinces werehome to 62% of Canada's totalpopulation. The number of peopleable to speak both languages was3.3 million in Quebec (57% ofCanada's bilingual population)and approximately 1.4 million inOntario (24% of Canada's bilingualpopulation). New Brunswick had246,000 bilingual people, there-fore, 86% of Canada's bilingualpopulation was living in one ofthose three provinces in 2011.These findings show that bilin-gualism continues to be concen-trated in the 'bilingual belt,'Note10 which is an area of frequentcontact between Anglophonesand Francophones that includespar ts of Quebec and the par ts ofOntario and New Brunswick thatborder Quebec. The concentration of the bilingualpopulation is not a recent phenom-enon. In 1961, 87% of Canada'sbilingual population lived in Que-bec, Ontario or New Brunswickand, in every decennial censusyear, 55% to 60% of bilingual Ca-nadians were living in Quebec(57% in 2011).What is the reason for this dis-tinctive feature of Quebec? It isprimarily because Francophones,

most of whom live in Quebec, have a higher rate of bilingualismthan Anglophones,Note 11 butalso because QuebecAnglophones have a higher rateof bilingualism, as official-lan-guage minorities (Francophonesoutside Quebec and Anglophonesin Quebec) are more bilingualthan the majority.Note 12Across Canada, the rate of bilin-gualism in 2011 was 44% forFrancophones, compared with 8%for Anglophones. As for official-language minor i t ies,Anglophones in Quebec had a bi-lingualism rate of 61% (comparedwith 6% for Anglophones in therest of Canada), whi leFrancophones outside Quebechad a bilingualism rate of 87%(compared with 38% forFrancophones in Quebec).Outside Quebec, the growth inbilingualism slowed down as aresult of two factors determiningthe evolution of bilingualism: (1)

a recent drop in enrolment inFrench-as-a-second-language(FSL) courses in public schools;and (2) the share of internationalimmigration in the growth of thepopulation. The first factor that may have af-fected the evolution of bilingual-ism outside Quebec is students'level of exposure to FSL pro-grams.In the 1970s and 1980s, enrol-ment in French immersion andregular FSL programs in publicEnglish-language schools outsideQuebec increased significantly(Chart 2). For example, close to 260schools offered a French immersionprogram in the 1976/1977 schoolyear, and that number reachedclose to 1,800 in 1991/1992. Overthe same period, enrolment rosefrom 23,000 to more than 267,000for French immersion programs, and from 1.5 million to 1.8 millionfor regular FSL programs.

At the same time, employment fell in agriculture.Public sector employment increased in March while the num-ber of private sector employees and self-employed was un-changed.MORE YOUTHS WORKING IN MARCHEmployment for people aged 15 to 24 rose by 33,000 in March, but their unemployment rate remained at 13.6% as moreyouths par ticipated in the labour market. Compared with 12months earlier, both employment and the unemployment ratefor this group were little changed. While there was little change in employment for men andwomen aged 25 to 54 in March, the unemployment rate de-clined 0.2 percentage points to 5.7%, as fewer people in thisage group searched for work.Employment was also little changed for men and women aged55 and over in March. How-ever, the unemployment rates in these provinces remain thelowest in the country.INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVEEmployment in health care and social assistance increasedby 24,000 in March, continuing a long-term upward trend.

CANADA SPEAKING MORE OR LESSFRENCH ? IMMIGRATION ANY FACTOR ?CONTD. FROM PAGE 8However, while public schoolenrolment in French immersionprograms continued to rise after1991/1992, totalling more than341,000 in 2010/2011, enrolmentin regular FSL programs fell by432,000, to a total of 1.4 million. In other words, the number ofFrench immersion students wentup 28%, and the number of regu-lar FSL students went down 24%.The total percentage of young Ca-nadians in public primary or sec-ondary schools outside Quebecwho were exposed to FSL pro-grams went from 53% to 44%.The other major factor that mayaffect bilingualism trends is in-

ternational immigration. Immi-grants are now the main factorbehind populat ion growth inCanada, and more than 80% ofimmigrants have neither Englishnor French as their mothertongue, which has a direct impacton the evolution of English-Frenchbilingualism in Canada.Across Canada in 2011, the rateof English-French bilingualismamong immigrants (13%) wasless than that of the Canadian-born (19%). However, the situa-tion in Quebec is not the same asin the rest of Canada. In Quebec, the rate of bilingual-ism among immigrants (51%) isgreater than that of the Canadian-

born (42%). In fact, immigrantsliving in Quebec whose mothertongue is neither Engl ish norFrench are often trilingual. In contrast, outside Quebec, 6%of immigrants repor ted being ableto conduct a conversation in bothofficial languages in 2011, com-pared with 11% of the Canadian-born. In addition, among peoplewhose mother tongue is English ora language other than English orFrench, immigrants in all agegroups have lower rates of bilin-gualism than the Canadian-born,except among people age 45 to 54whose mother tongue is English.Source - Stats Canada - (www.Statscan.gc.ca)

Ontario - Though an impressive line of candidates helmed theirparties, Quebec Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard's economicagenda won the hearts of Quebecers who after long and thornydebates went to vote in a bid to choose the next provincialgovernment. Yudhvir announced this during his recent show. Thepolling stations remained open from 9:30am to 8pm but the earlyfinal count had already shown Liberals leading the race all theway. The Liberals who clinched 70 seats in the 125 seat NationalAssembly and acquired 41.5 per cent of the popular vote tookadvantage of PQ missteps. The Parti Québécois won 30 seats, theCoalition Avenir Québec 22 and Québec Solidaire three. The election was called in early by the PQ on the prospect offorming a majority government but the whole exercise turned outto be futile with Pauline Marois resigning as head of the PartiQuebecois after her party's defeat in elections. She also lost herown seat in Charlevoix-Cote-de-Beaupre to Liberal opponentCaroline Simard after a hotly contested race. Meanwhile PhilippeCouillard, who will be in power for the next four years, hasthanked Quebecers for helping his party form a stablegovernment. After winning the election Couillard vowed toestablish an honest and transparent government also.On the other hand François Legault's Coalition Avenir Québec hasannounced to form a strong opposition. A number of nationalleaders have already extended their felicitations to Couillard onthis historic win. The long campaign that focused for the last 33days had not only been on party leaders but the issues they werehighlighting and according to Dr Sharda the frenzied debates ofthe incumbent Parti Québécois Premier Pauline Marois, who

enjoys decades of executive and legislative experience, backfired.Turning attention towards Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, Yudhvirasked Dr Sharda if Justin factor played a role in Couillard'svictory? Dr Sharda did not see a connect saying the many gaffesof Marois - that of referendum and charter of values, that wouldhave banned government workers from wearing overt religioussymbols, made it easy for him to win. Yudhvir invited Baljit Bawawho has been associated with the Liberal party for a long time, congratulated him and solicited about the outcome of electionsand if the major issues facing Quebec such as budget deficit, health issues, and corruption will top Couillard's agenda. Baljitexpressed his gratitude for being given the chance to present hisviews adding the Liberal leader is very much on all these mattersand is determined to take them head on. Dr Sharda commentedthat democracy has its own flaws as with 41.5% votes Couillardwill form a government but a hefty 59% who voted against himwill have no voice for the next four years. Baljit disagreed againstthe sentiment saying 59% did not vote against the Liberals, theysimply did not turn out to vote.Meanwhile, both Yudhvir and Dr Sharda marveled at the wisdomof Harper government that decided to stay out of thecampaign, giving Quebecers a chance to decide bythemselves to stay with a federalist government. But oncethe results were announced Harper showed the desire towork with the new government. At this point Dr Shardapoignantly said that it must be heartrending for Marois toserve PQ for 30 years but gave it a bleak future by fuellingthe separatist issue too much and even lost her own seat.He reiterated had Marois communicated with supporters in abetter way, things could be routed in a different manner.

CONTD. FROM PAGE 1Among men with a university degree, the three most common occupations in2011-computer programmers and interactive media developers, financialauditors and accountants, and secondary school teachers-accounted for11% of these young working men. Similar occupations topped the list ofyoung male university graduates in 1991.Among those without a university degree, the top occupation in 2011 was thatof retail salesperson and sales clerk, which accounted for 4% and 3% ofwomen and men in this group respectively. The next two most commonoccupations were carpenters and truck drivers for men, and early childhoodeducators and assistants and general office clerks for women. In 1991 and 2011, young men without a university degree were employed insimilar occupations, as four of their five most common occupations were thesame in both years. In 1991, the top two occupations among young women without a universitydegree were secretaries and accounting and related clerks, which accountedfor 12% of all women in this group. By 2011, the proportion employed in thesetwo occupations had fallen to 4%.RISING SHARE OF WOMEN IN MANY OCCUPATIONSThe proportion of women grew in many occupations between 1991 and 2011.This was especially true among university-educated workers. For example, among university graduates, the proportion of women roseamong health policy researchers, consultants and program officers (up from47% to 76%); specialists in human resources (up from 57% to 78%); andgeneral practitioners and family physicians (up from 43% to 62%).Among those without a degree, the share of women rose in some occupa-tions, such as police officers (up from 13% to 24%) but declined in others, such as cooks (down from 50% to 33%).Over the period, the male-female distribution within occupations remainedmore disproportionate among workers without a university degree. In com-parison, that distribution was more balanced in occupations held by workerswith a university degree.OVER QUALIFICATION REMAINED STABLE AMONG UNIVERSITY GRADU-ATESWhen people have education credentials that exceed the skill level of their

job, they may be considered overqualified. One measure of overqualification is the proportion of individuals with a uni-versity degree who work in occupations requiring a high school education. This measure excludes those working in "management" occupations.According to this measure, 18% of both male and female university gradu-ates aged 25 to 34 were overqualified in 2011. These proportions have changedlittle since 1991, despite the large increase in the supply of university gradu-ates over the period. However, significant variations in overqualification rates were found acrosscategories of immigrants and across fields of study.Among university-educated immigrants who did not have a degree fromCanada or the United States, 43% of women and 35% of men were in occupa-tions requiring a high school education in 2011.In comparison, the rates varied between 15% and 20% among men andwomen who were born in Canada, and among immigrants who had a univer-sity degree from Canada or the United States.About one-third of working men and women with a university degree inhumanities were overqualified in 2011.In contrast, fewer than 15% of men and women with a universitydegree in education, in health and related fields, and in architecture, engineering and related fields were overqualified.Other factors were associated with lower overqualification rates, suchas being older (e.g. above age 30), and having a level of universitydegree beyond a bachelor's (such as a master's or a PhD).Overqualification also varied across regions. More par ticularly, youngworkers who lived in Quebec were less likely to be overqualified thanthose living in Ontario.NOTE TO READERSIn this study, data from the 1991 and 2006 censuses of population andfrom the 2011 National Household Survey are used to examine changesin the occupational profiles and overqualification of young workersaged 25 to 34. In all sources, workers are defined as those who had ajob in the reference week (that is, during the week preceding thecensus or the survey). The comparisons over time are based on four-digit National Occupational Classification variables, which can be found in2011 National Household Survey data and in census data since 1991. Read-ers should note, however, that comparisons over time cannot always bemade for some specific occupational categories because some occupationsin 2011 did not exist in 1991.

To that end, the White House issued a warning toRussian President Vladimir Putin."If Russia moves into Eastern Ukraine, either overtly orcovertly, this would be a very serious escalation," WhiteHouse spokesman Jay Carney said, adding that the US is"prepared to impose further sanctions on sectors of the

The Ukrainian government has vowed to quell theunrest despite the tens of thousands of Russian troopsstationed along their joint border.Making clear the US considers Russia responsible forinciting unrest in eastern Ukraine, Carney said there'sstrong evidence that some pro-Russian protesters whohave taken over government buildings in eastern Ukrainewere paid, and are not local residents."What's clear is that this is a result of increased Russianpressure on Ukraine. And we see it in the troops that havemassed on the border," Carney said, urging Putin to removethose troops from the border. In a phone call earlier today, Kerry told his Russiancounterpart, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, that the USwas watching events in an array of eastern Ukrainian citieswith "great concern" and skepticism that they werespontaneous, the State Department said. Kerry pointed outthat Russian intelligence operatives working in Ukraine hadrecently been arrested and called on Russia's governmentto disavow the actions of separatists.Lavrov, for his part, emphasised a "persistent need for adeep and transparent constitutional reform with fullinvolvement of all political forces and regions, particularlyamid the escalating protests in southeastern Ukraine,"Russia's foreign ministry said in a statement.

From Kareena-Akshay to Irrfan-Kangana:onscreen couples getting back together

Back in 2009, former Miss Sri Lanka Jacqueline Fernandez’sBollywood career kicked off alongside Riteish Deshmukh (inAladin). A year later, the on-screen pair was back with Jaane

Eras come and go in Bollywood and it is widely seen thatevery era is governed by one or the other kind of moviemaking. But "masala entertainer` is one such ilk of cine

crafting, which had never lost its charm, neither among the cineartisans nor among the cine enthusiasts.Be it the era of 90s or the decade which has just gone by. In everydecade masala entertainers have made a mark for themselves and atthe same time have bestowed some of our ace leading man with anopportunity of exhibiting their acting talent with utmost prowess. But in the recent times we witnessed the inclination of some of ourcine wizards towards making content driven movies, but in spite ofthat the art of making masala movies never lost its lustre amongthose who are adroit enough in crafting an exceptional cine offeringdespite having a "common or garden" kind of script in their hand. And undoubtedly `maestro of masala movies`, David Dhawan isone such cine conjurer of Bollywood who has got that magic wand, with which he can effortlessly create a quaint visual delight for the

viewers. In the recent past numerous cine-whiz tried to garner thelegacy of this evergreen ilk by casting some of the glittering stars ofshowbiz, but unfortunately none of them succeeded in doing athorough justice to the genre. And movies like `Besharam`, `PhataPoster Nikla Hero` and even the `R Rajkumar` failed miserably inextracting the expected response from the audience. But this timeit's the masala movies' maestro David Dhawan who for the first timeteamed up with his son Varun to recapture the apex throne of hisfiefdom.David has got a signature style of movie making from which heseldom prefer to part. Be it about dishing out something totallyinnovative, or working on the remakes Dhawan never forgets tomaintain a sort of uniformity in his creation with his stamp all overthe end product. So is the case with just released `Main Tera Hero`.Although `Main Tera Hero` is the remake of southern superhit"Kandireega", but in spite of that it has a winsome fragrance ofDavid-ian style of filmography. At the power of which Dhawanintroduced the masses to an altogether different side of actors likeGovinda, Salman, and Sanjay Dutt in the past.Anyhow, coming to the premise of "Main Tera Hero", the movienarrates the story of "happy go lucky yet bad in studies", SrinathPrasad aka Seenu ( Varun Dhawan) who after receiving an emotionalbashing from his father (Manoj Pahwa), of course because ofhis 'bad in studies status', land in a Bangalore based collegeto prove his worth. As soon as he arrives in the college he has a rendezvous withSunaian (Ileana D'Cruz) and falls head over heel for her. Butunfortunate for Seenu, there is another stalking rowdy copAngad Negi ( Arunoday Singh) who is behind Sunaina andwant to marry her at any cost. With the frames rolling ahead our very trickster, Seenu takesup the gauntlet of Angad of winning Sunaina's heart andsubsequently succeeds in doing it too. But things literallyget toppled for him when a Bangkok based mafia lord, VikrantSighal (Anupam Kher) k idnaps Sunaina because of h isdaughter Ayesha's (Nargis Fakhri) fascination for Seenu. So what happens next does Seenu succeeds in bringing backSunaina, or ends up sacrificing his feelings to save her. Toknow watch this mindless yet entertaining cine delight fromthe factory of David Dhawan.Be it any decade of David's cine career, his cine offeringshave always made it to cine arena with an unsaid and unwrittendisclaimer that "leave your brains at home" if you really wantto enjoy the flick. So seems to be the case with "Main TeraHero".Some may find that plot of `Main Tera Hero` is too flimsy tobe tagged as something out of the box, but it is that prevailingsimplicity in the narration which does the miracle. And on topof it, it's the scribing dexterity of Tushar Hiranandani who inspite of re-tailoring the storyline for a remake, has succeededin keeping the USP, i.e. humour, alive.Garnished with quick witted, Tom and Jerry kind of humour blendedwith Govinda styled comic timing and that too sans gaucherie, undoubtedly plot of `Main Tera Hero` leaves no space for yawnsand ennui. Besides, it's the guileless yet hilarious dialogues of MilapZaveri which further adds to the magnificence of the movie.

MOST OUTFITS WORN BY STARS AND THE REST OF THE CASTIN A FILM END UP IN THE PRODUCTION HOUSE'S TRUNKS.AND LATER, THESE CLOTHES ARE MIXED AND MATCHED FOREXTRAS AND BACKGROUND DANCERS IN OTHER FILMSEver wondered what happens to the numerous outfits worn byactors in a film? Bollywood stars break into a song on screen, crooning atop snow-capped mountains, flowing valleys and ex-otic flower beds or, gyrating in different costumes every nano-second. By the time the last shot of the film is taken, there arestacks of clothes left behind. Some may be garish, others outlandish and some wearable offscreen as well, but most make their way to the productionhouse's trunks, or petis in Bollywood parlance. They are stackedand rehashed for the production house's future projects.Of course, at times, something an actor fancies goes home withhim or her (no questions asked). Or when celebrity designersare styling for the lead stars, the outfits go with the designer. Itall comes under the production costs incurred for a film.Actress Ayesha Khanna, who starred in the recent releaseDishkiyaaon, has been a stylist for Yash Raj Films such asBand Baja Baaraat (2010) and Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl (2011). Shesays, `At Yash Raj, all the costumes are stacked in petis. Eachpeti is labelled so that you know exactly for which film the leadstars, suppor ting cast and the extras wore the clothes. Later, foranother film, things get mixed and matched.`Ayesha cites an example, `Aishwarya Rai's Kajra Re item num-ber outfit from the 2005 film Bunty Aur Babli was used on abackground dancer in Band Baaja Baaraat in 2010. It was mixedand matched. The choli was worn with another ghaghra, so itwas impossible that anyone will notice it.`

THE SRI LANKAN PLAYERS CELEBRATE WITH THE WORLD T20 TROPHY.

Sri Lanka 134 for 4 (Sangakkara 52*,Jayawardene 24) beat India 130 for4 (Kohli 77) by 6 wickets‘Winning world events is an ugly business. Even aspir

ing to win is. Ask Mahela Jayawardene and KumarSangakkara. Before tonight they had reached finalsfour times, wanting desperately to win, and ended

up with broken hear ts each time. On a night that these two cham-pion players finally got that monkey off their backs - in their lastTwenty20 international match - another champion player played apoignant, cagey innings that cost his side the final. Yuvraj Singh,India's limited-overs talisman for so long, came in at 64 for 2 inthe 11th over, scored 11 off 21, denied the unstoppable Virat Kohlithe strike, and that spell of play resulted in the lowest first-in-nings total in a World Twenty20 final and the second-lowest scorefor the loss of only four wickets.Title matches consume the vanquished. This final may have putdown one of the a l l - t ime l imi ted-overs greats, but just askJayawardene and Sangakkara, the redemption didn't come easy.India defended the small total admirably, preying on the Sri Lankannerves, fielding everything down, spinning a web around the bats-men, but the two champions somehow had enough in them to taketheir side over the line. Under palpable pressure, against a shrewdlimited-overs captain, Jayawardene settled the early nerves witha run-a-ball 24, and Sangakkara saw the chase through with anice-cool unbeaten 52 off 35.Big finals are a cruel business, though, and history will remem-ber Yuvraj's knock as much as it will Sangakkara's. He has wonIndia matches from nowhere on innumerable occasions, he hasburied sides with his cameos, he has turned around games in 10balls, which is why he was still par t of the team in the final. MSDhoni trusted his match-winner, and sent him in ahead of SureshRaina and himself. Kohli, now the leading run-scorer in any WorldTwenty20, had just begun to put behind him a slow star t againstdisciplined Sri Lankan bowling. He had even been dropped byopposition captain Lasith Malinga on 11. He was in a mood tomake them pay.Sri Lanka, though, kept their wits, and gave Yuvraj nothing toscore off. That too after Kohli had laced the otherwise frugal NuwanKulasekara for six, four and six in the 16th over to make it 111 for2. That over featured another slip in the fielding when the fielderat cow corner was lobbed after misjudging a catch. Normally youwould expect teams to fall apar t at these times, but Sri Lankaproduced four superb overs. In the 17th, Yuvraj faced two dots from Sachithra Senanayake, who gave him no pace or room to work with. Malinga bowled thenext over, and was happy with a single to Kohli first ball. Thencame a yorker outside off. The dugout began to become edgy bynow. They badly needed Yuvraj to come off now, and make up forthe 9 off 17 he had made till now. You can't even begin to imaginewhat it would have been like being Kohli there, the best batsmanof the tournament, but now without the strike to make the differ-ence. When Kohli got the strike four th ball, Malinga again pro-duced a low wide one that he couldn't get under, and went on tobowl another dot to Yuvraj before the over ended. That dot was ayorker wide outside off, which went past and very near Yuvraj'soutside edge, and that Sangakkara didn't appeal loudly for it saidall you needed to know about Yuvraj's innings. When Yuvraj finally hit a full toss down the throat of long-off,Darren Sammy tweeted, "Not sure this catch needed to be taken."You felt for the batsman who would once have put these in thestands blindfolded and with one arm tied behind his back. Thistime, though, Sri Lanka's plan had come off, bowling full and wide, just inside the tram lines, stifling India. Kohli and Dhoni tried theirbest, but were second-best to the execution by Malinga andKulasekara. Kohli faced only eight balls in the last four overs.Only 19 came off them, and if this had not been a final and if thishad not been Sri Lanka, it was game over right there. Sri Lanka, though, were entering unchar tered territory. The fearof winning does strange things. They looked for the easy route.Kusal Perera tried to smash everything, smashed one out of thefirst six, and went out to the seventh. Jayawardene brought sanity

Yuvraj inningsapplies Dementor

kiss to India

‘THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND TWO OF INDIA'SWORLD TITLES HAD A NIGHTMARISHOUTING, STRUGGLING TO PROVIDE THE BIGHITS OR KOHLI THE STRIKE

Harry Potter readers will be familiar with what a magical crea-ture called a Dementor does. It sucks all happiness, all positiv-ity, all hope from a living being. It does not stop at that. It pro-ceeds to suck the very soul out, leaving only the body behind, practically lifeless. The latter act is called the Dementor's Kiss. Now not even the most cynical person would brand Yuvraj Singha Dementor even in the extreme emotion of what happened to-night in Dhaka. He has given Indian cricket and its fans numer-ous reasons and occasions to feel happy and proud about forover a decade. His deeds in limited-overs cricket, especially inthe 2011 World Cup, are the stuff of legend. His effor t of 11 off 21, however, was the Dementor's Kiss forIndia in the World T20 final. It wasn't only the chasm betweenthe number of deliveries he faced and the runs he scored. It wassomething more critical. It sucked all the momentum from theirinnings and left them with a total that did register on thescoreboard, but did little else for their prospects. It was so thor-ough a soul-destroying operation that it sought out whatevermomentum Virat Kohli was building, and killed it. This despiteyet another epic from Kohli, who must have felt like screamingout in frustration every time Yuvraj failed to hand him the strike.Twice, Yuvraj consumed half an over to bring Kohli on strike. Two sets of three balls each producing a grand total of twosingles. In the 15th and 17th overs, when all batsmen are sup-posed to be doing in T20 is try to hit the ball out of sight. Thiswith a charged-up, in-form, incandescent Kohli straining to gethis chance at the other end. Denying strike to a batsman in full flow can rob him of hisrhythm and the zone he has worked so hard till then to build forhimself.Off the four th ball of that 17th, Kohli charged the bowler, butcould only hit it along the ground to long-on, admonishing him-self as he trotted to the other end for a single. How much of thatanger was directed at Yuvraj, we will never know. Kohli finds ithard to hide his disappointment even when a team-matemisfields. All we saw was that after the game ended and Yuvrajwalked up from his position at deep midwicket to shake handswith team-mates and the opposition, Kohli quietly slunk awaywhen the senior batsman came close to him. From the man who Kohli had so much faith in that he had madehis franchise owner put in the highest bid of the IPL auction forYuvraj just over a month ago.India were out of it, barring a miracle, by the time their inningshad ended. Yuvraj had left India with little positive vibe at thebreak, after they had seen their decorated match-winner of yearsgone past struggle to the extent and for the time he did.West Indies had been 38 for 2 after 11 overs in the 2012 WorldT20 final, also against Sri Lanka. From there, Marlon Samuelshad catapulted them to 137 for 6. India were 65 for 2 after 11overs in this final. From there, they managed seven runs lessthan what West Indies had made, after star ting 27 in front. Notonly does that show you how inspirational Samuels was thatColombo night, it also rams home how dispiriting Yuvraj wasthis Dhaka night. In the 2013 Champions Trophy final, India had ended one shor tof the 130 they made tonight. But they had been given a lateboost by Ravindra Jadeja, and would have drawn hope fromthat. Hope can be a tenuous thing to maintain, especially in anall-or-nothing clash like a final. To watch someone as experienced on thebig occasion as Yuvraj scratch around for nearly half the duration of a T20innings can be gutting for the entire side. The delivery that Yuvraj got out to,a high full toss, he would have clobbered for six nearly every time in hisglorious past. By the time he holed out, it was the penultimate over, and Indiahad had a gigantic suction pump run over them. They had not got too many freebies from Sri Lanka till now, and they were notgetting anything for what remained of their innings. Kohli, indefatigable buthelpless Kohli, turned for an impossible second run off the final ball of theinnings, trying to regain something, anything for India, and getting run-out for77 off 58. But it was too late. The Dementor's Kiss had already been deliv-ered. Most unfortunately for India, it had come from the man who had wonthem the 2011 World Cup. That is what will be the hardest to digest.

Yuvraj Singh is the picture of dejection after his 21-ballordeal at the crease sapped India's momentum and played amassive role in their World T20 final defeat

COOL SANGAKKARABREAKS FINAL HOODOO

to proceedings with a tickle here, a nudge there, and with therequired run-rate in grasp it began to become a stroll, until RAshwin, the bowler of the tournament, produced a top edge fromTillakaratne Dilshan, which was caught excellently by Kohli atthe square-leg boundary. Two men who didn't deserve to be on thelosing side were keeping India alive.Jayawardene and Sangakkara then added a run-a-ba l l 24 .Jayawardene began to toy around with the fields. Cricket loversall around the world now began to dream of a fairy-tale finish. What could be better than these two stalwar ts, much like Arjunaand Aravinda 18 years ago, being there in the end? This, though, would take more sweat and tears yet. Jayawardene toe-ended asweep off par t-timer Suresh Raina, and Ashwin produced a div-ing catch at midwicket. Soon Dhoni took a sensational low catchto send Lahiru Thirimanne back. Dhoni's team had never lost aworld final; it was now sensing the kill at 78 for 4 in the 13th over. This was tense stuff. Wouldn't the dugout have revisited that fa-miliar sick feeling of coming so close and finishing second-best?They tried the desperate now. Not having the emotional strengthleft to take this to the deep bitter end, they sent in the big hitterThisara Perera ahead of Angelo Mathews. They were banking onthe fact that India would soon have to bowl spinners that wouldbring the ball in to the left-hand batsmen.Sangakkara had been going smoothly at one end, but it was theother end that was causing the trouble. The risk was taken. Youcouldn't change it even if you wanted to, with Perera scoring justtwo off the first six, and with 47 still required off the last six overs. This was the moment, though. Mishra, two overs for four runs tillnow, was bowling to two lef t-hand batsmen. The first ball Pereragot from Mishra, he shimmied down a touch and let out an al-mighty swing. As it flew into the night sky and over long-on, reliefcame back into the camp. The cool Sangakkara then guided Mishrapast fine leg, and this was now turning Sri Lanka's way.In the next over, Sangakkara played probably the shot of the match.India had relied on Ashwin's accuracy through the day and hadgot themselves an extra fielder by not placing a fine-leg at all. This time, though, Sangakkara moved inside the line of one, tookit in front of middle, and closed the face at the exact moment totickle it through that fine-leg gap for four. Now some luck ap-peared too with edges landing safely in the home stretch. Youcouldn't fault Sangakkara for wondering where the hell this luckhad been when Gilchrist, Gambhir, Afridi and Samuels had bro-ken his hear t. This night, though, was for him to rejoice. All thosedefeats will hur t a little less now.

We are extremely happy that Shoaib has expressed his desire to playhis role in uplifting the State Bank cricket team," Zaheer told the Dawn. "Shoaib hasshown deep interest when we approached him. At the moment, we are in the processof formalising the contract details." State Bank of Pakistan avoided relegation fromthe departmental first-class competition after they finished tenth in the 11-team com-petition. Zaheer said that the team was looking to beef up the support staff to improvethe performances in the coming season. "Yeah, it was a very close call [to avertrelegation] last season," he said. "At times the entire squad was under great pressureto survive the drop. Had that been the case, it would have been pretty hard for us to runthe team because a colossal amount is spent each season.Considered one of the fastest bowlers of his era, Shoaib made his debut in November1997 and retired after the 2011 World Cup in a career marred with controversy and injuries. He had expressed in 2012 his interest in taking up the role of bowling coach in the Pakistannational team set-up, under Dav Whatmore, but such a deal never materialised.

Sri Lanka savourlong-sought success

"There were two gentlemen who gave a lot not only to Sri Lankancricket but to cricket as a whole. May be the Almighty wants them towin a World Cup and leave on a high. That's why He put his hand in thisso that they get another match."When Darren Sammy made this prediction at the end of the first semi-final, one felt how strongly the West Indies captain believed in destiny, particularly after a hailstorm hit the Shere Bangla National Stadium togive Sri Lanka a win through D/L, and depriving the defending cham-pions of an assault in the last few overs.Sri Lanka's captain Lasith Malinga said the win had nothing to do withluck, but a lot of hard work and planning which brought them thevictory. Either way, destiny or not, it was down to winning the bigmoments, and that's where Sri Lanka stepped up.Sammy's statement also brought to mind the sheer respect that worldcricket has for Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Sammywas right in the end. Perhaps it was all meant to be, as Sri Lanka wona major tournament final, after four failed attempts in the last sevenyears. Both had announced their retirement prior to the start of the World T20,drawing a bit of flak for taking away too much attention. The teamhowever, said they wanted to win it for their two ayyas, the word forelder brother in Sinhalese. Sangakkara said that they won it for everySri Lankan. "It is wonderful that the side wanted to win it for us," Sangakkara said."But there are 20 million other people to win for. It's not just about me orMahela."It's about an entire squad, everyone who stands with you and behindyou. We get noticed because it's our last game, but at the end of the dayeveryone has played a part."Sangakkara paid tribute to everyone who supported Sri Lanka cricket, and the cricket team, through thick and thin. There have been toughmoments, particularly the four tournament final defeats over the pastseven years. In 2007, they were steamrolled by Australia but the momentum waswith Sri Lanka in 2009 when they lost to Pakistan in the World T20 final. In the 2011 World Cup final, they seemed to have India on the mat butwere pushed out of that contest by MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir. Athome, in the last World T20 final, Sri Lanka failed to chase a moderatetarget against West Indies."This is the first time I have been a part of a team that has won a WorldCup," Sangakkara said. "It's hard to describe exactly what you feel, butyou feel humble. You realise how difficult it is to get here, how muchsupport you need, not just from your team-mates, but from your family, your fans, the support staff."You can never do anything alone. You may be the best batsman in theworld or the best bowler in the world, but you can't do anything withoutsupport. At moments like this you have to look back, reflect and bethankful for that support, because without that you wouldn't be here. It'sbeen an amazing journey. It's time to walk away, and to walk away likethis is even better."Before Sangakkara spoke, Malinga said that he backed his experi-enced players to come good on the big day, as he understands theirability having observed them for the past decade."I've played over ten years in this team, I know every single player, their ability, what they can do," Malinga said. "I enjoyed my captaincyin the last three games, I know exactly what particular players havewhat ability. I used that experience during my captaincy and I wassuccessful."Anyone can say anything. Some say winning is luck, some say win-ning is talent. I really trust that we didn't have luck. We worked hard,we know our ability, we can do that, everyone is talented, that's whywe won the match. I don't believe in luck."Sangakkara, in a way, echoed Malinga's viewpoint when asked if thegame of cricket had finally given back to him and Jayawardene afteryears of serving the game. He said it was about finally taking anopportunity."I don't think the game owes us, or any player, anything. Our job is to tryand play it as best as we can, and walk away hopefully having madea positive impact. "The game gives us the opportunities and it's up tous to try and take them. We had four opportunities before this, andtoday we took it. You need a bit of ability, luck, planning, execution.Right place, right time, right game."

COYTE, LANNING SPARKLE ASAUSTRALIA COAST TO HAT-TRICK

AUSTRALIA 106 FOR 4 (LANNING 44)BEAT ENGLAND 105 FOR 8 (COYTE 3-16)BY SIX WICKETS‘There is no doubt who the best women's T20 side in the world

are. Australia overwhelmed England to secure a hat-trick ofWorld T20 titles, cruising to a six-wicket victory. They weremiserly in the field, restricting England to 105 for 8, then

quickly put themselves ahead of the rate in the chase which wasfittingly led by Meg Lanning with a powerful 44 as she became theleading run-scorer at the event. The key difference was summed up in the sixes count: Australia struckfour, extending their lead in the six-hitting league for the tournament, while England could not manage one - leaving their tournament tally atzero. The Powerplays were a microcosm: England limped to 24 for 1while Australia skipped to 43 for 1 - including two of the sixes - tobreak the back of the chase.Jess Jonassen set the tone, drilling Danielle Hazell's first ball for six,as she took 14 off the second over of the innings. The main threat toAustralia was Anya Shrubsole, the tournament's leading wicket-taker,but with a small total to chase they knew they did not have to over-attack against her although it did not stop Lanning putting her over theboundary - it was the ultimate statement from Australia's captain.Shrubsole did add to her wicket tally when Jonassen picked out mid-onand Jenny Gunn removed Elyse Villani but they were no more thanminor irritants for Australia. Perry, who earlier claimed a miserly 2 for13 from her four overs, skipped to an unbeaten 31 as she and Lanningadded 60 in eight overs although the captain could not quite be there atthe end when she tried to clear the infield for the winning hit but foundmid-off.England's batting has been underwhelming during the tournament -only Charlotte Edwards played close to her best and the fact they wereoften chasing low totals meant the middle and lower order had not hadmuch time in the middle when they were needed to try and lift aninnings in the finalThey struggled to overcome a slow pitch as their two leading batsmen,Sarah Taylor and Edwards, laboured against accurate bowling. SarahCoyte removed them both, Edwards lofting to mid-on trying to force thepace and Taylor unfortunate to be lbw on the reverse sweep, on herway to the second-best figures in a Women's World T20 final.England's only fluent period of batting came shortly after the Powerplayas Taylor and Heather Knight moved along at nearly eight an over to

suggest they had gone some way to mastering the conditions. ButTaylor's departure was soon followed by Lydia Greenway's, wellcaught low down by Healy, and when Knight was superbly caught atdeep midwicket it meant two new batsmen had to try and rebuild. They never threatened to break the shackles and the only two bound-aries in the second half of the innings came in the same over fromRene Farrell. However, the expectation was that Australia would stillhave to work hard in the chase but they barely had a concern as theykept hold of a trophy that has become a permanent fixture in theJolimont cabinet.
