HUNDREDS of community, and ANC,members gathered at the DambuzaSports ground last Friday, in honour ofthe late politician and teacher HarryGwala.
Ward councillor Mtuza Mkhize saidthat while the focus in recent monthshad been on the elections in May, thiswas a way of shifting away from thatand focusing on the people
“Comrade Gwala loved people andwould have never let anyone go hungry.Today we witness rape, abuse and wesee that many of the victims are elderlypeople. Part of our gathering today isto remind people that there is stillhope. People like comrade Gwalawould never have allowed such thingsto take place.
“We thought of the idea and weliaised with people like the deputy
mayor of Msunduzi MunicipalityThobani Zuma. They agreed and theywere keen to help out and make theevent possible,” said Mkhize.
Moses Mabhida regional secretary,Supa Zuma, said that in honour ofGwala, they would strive as the ANC toserve the people and make it possiblefor them to keep on trusting the organisation.
He went on to praise the role thatGwala played while he was still alive.
“Gwala was the first comrade to bea member of parliament in KZN. At thetime, there were very few members ofthe ANC in parliament less than 30members. But today, we have around52. In the midlands, his name willalways be the most talked about in thehistory of politics,” said Zuma.
Among the people that werepresent were members of the Gwalafamily, Msunduzi mayor Chris Ndlela aswell as councillors and members of theANC from different structures.

The newly launched Multi-ChoiceDiski Challenge, under thePSLwing,issurelygoingtotakelo-calsoccerandplayers’ futureedu-cation to another level.
According to the official spon-sors, the MultiChoice Diski Chal-lenge’s main aim is to transformthe way local football players ap-proach the game from a youngage.
Theleagueismainlyforplayersunder the age of 23, with threeplayers over the age of 23 allowedper team.
PSL chairman,Dr IrvinKhoza,said that the emphasiswas onde-veloping young players for the fu-ture.
“Developmentinthiscountryisa very big problem. Precision,qualityandpossessionaresomeofthe biggest challenges facing ouryoungsters,” he said.
Khozaalsoemphasizedtheim-portance of teaching youngsterslifeskillsandmoneymanagementamongst, other things.
“Wewill also teachyoungplay-ers how to manage their financesand life skills.We realised that thelife of a footballer is 12 years andif aplayerdidnot createhis legacyduring that period, he will have aproblem
inthefuture.Theseyoungplay-ers get a lot of money and theywaste it because they are nottaught how to spend itwisely,” ex-plained Khoza.

Presently, the majority of playersare subjected to simplistic trainingdaily. It is noted, for example, thatmany footballers still engage in longhours of intensive, plain running. Thisdoes not help to optimise players’performance in actual gameconditions.
Endurance in football is affected bymany factors, including mental tasks,technical executions, field conditions,weather, opposition etc.
Factors of performance should not
be trained separately if developmentand performance is to improve.
The level of performance at whichaplayerwillperformismainlydecidedby the degree at which his develop-mentwas accomplished. The relevan-cy and quality of training received atperformance level is very important.This poses challenges for footballcoaches to improve their professional
skills of training and coaching.We therefore need honest answers
to this question: Are South Africanfootball coachesequippedtoempowerand train local footballers effectively?Are we equipped to plan trainingprogrammes that addresses cognitivecomponents?Modernfootballtrainingshould train perceptual ability,attention, concentration, emotion-control and motivation. The modernfootball coach should be more of abrain trainer than a great motivator.
Generally, our players’ lack ofperipheral vision affects their tacticalplay. It is important therefore thatcoaches empower themselves withknowledge and skills to developspecific and complex football trainingsessions.
