Eating Brain Healthy Foods
Many individuals tend to think that when their bodies start feeling the effects of age, there is nothing
they can do about it. They believe that they must succumb to the effects of aging and watch their body
gradually shut down.
This is not so. There are many things people can do to make the process of aging less harsh on their
bodies. One of the most important things is eating a healthy and well-balanced diet.
It is probably accurate to say that most people believe that eating a healthy and well-balanced diet is
important, yet very few Americans actually do so. Indeed, consistently eating healthy foods is a difficult
thing to do.
Eating healthy is often associated with being time consuming, tedious, and expensive. Eating healthy
does not have to be these things, however.
As long as eating a healthy and well-balanced diet becomes
a priority and a habit, it can be easy. One of the essential
parts of a well-balanced diet is eating foods that are healthy
for your brain.
Many older people find that their brain strength and activity
declines as they get older. Eating the following foods will
help you keep your brain sharp and active, even as you age.
Blueberries
One of the best foods for your brain is blueberries. Blueberries have been nicknamed “brainberries” by
many individuals in the dietetics field.
Blueberries help protect the brain from harmful stress, and also help protect you against getting
diseases like Alzheimer’s or dementia. The consumption of blueberries has been linked to higher
learning capacity and increased motor skills as well.
Many doctors and dieticians recommend eating a full cup of blueberries per day, whether they are
frozen, fresh, or blended. These blueberries can do wonders for your overall brain health.
Salmon
Another great brain healthy food is wild salmon. Salmon are rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids that
greatly facilitate brain functions.
Salmon also contains anti-inflammatory substances that help protect the brain. Fish that provide similar
healthy benefits are herring and sardines.
These, however, are less common in grocery stores, so most people who are focusing on eating brain
healthy foods focus on salmon.
Nuts and Seeds
Another category of brain healthy foods is nuts and seeds. Most
nuts and seeds contain large amounts of Vitamin E, which help keep
your brain sharp and active even as it ages.
When people think of nuts, they usually think of the more common
nuts, like almonds and walnuts. While these types of nuts are
indeed brain healthy, there are many, many others kinds of nuts
that are beneficial for the brain.
Some examples of these nuts are: hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, peanuts, and filberts. Healthy seeds
include: sunflower seeds, flax seed, and sesame seeds.
Avocadoes are another food that is very healthy for the brain. Avocadoes contain monounsaturated
fats, which contribute to healthy blood flow.
Many individuals who do not choose to eat healthy and well-balanced diets will end up needing electro
surgery as they age. Electro surgery can be very costly and painful.
Start eating a healthy and well-balanced diet now, and save yourself the pain later.
